(Moxiety) Closer
Requested by ThisIsntGospel7076 I'm so sorry it's a little late, I hope it's acceptable. (okay, the real reason I've been slacking is because I have just barely been introduced to Harry Potter and I'm already on the last book. I am emotionally drained (╥_╥) )
Virgil hated being treated as though he were a child. He wanted to be treated as an equal, someone who was understood and taken seriously.
But, he never meant to hurt Patton. That was the last thing he wanted.
“I don't always like when you talk about me like I'm some...innocent, harmless angel.”
His words replayed in his mind, and Patton's reaction, he looked baffled at first, and then he looked as though he were trying to hold himself together. His face was painfully stretched into a smile despite the almost pained expression he held. Virgil felt something squeeze his heart and he felt sick, he lied on his bed and groaned as he tried not to dwell on it.
He felt so guilty, Patton always took care of him, always made sure he was healthy and happy, always took his side and defended him. And this was how he repaid him? With heartbreak and abandonment?
Virgil was utterly sick with himself, sick with the person he had become. How could he be so selfish? Of course, he knew he needed to be more than just 'kiddo' and 'Thomas's anxiety' he wanted to make a name for himself, to redeem himself. He wanted to grow up.
Eventually he knew he couldn't stay as Patton's kiddo for long, and there was a pretty logical explanation as to why he chose to change himself.
He was in love with Patton. So how could he love Patton if he still saw him as a little kitten unable to fend for himself? He never wanted this to be something that hurt Patton. Never.
In fact, he was doing this for Patton, to be closer than they already were. How would he be able to feel comfortable with Patton if he still saw him as his kiddo? As a son. Just the thought of it was enough to weird him out. He didn't want that.
He wanted more, he really, really, wanted to be close to Patton. But the process was hurting him in ways he never expected to be, he thought what he had said was for the best, he thought Patton would understand what he wanted to do. He thought this was the way to success. The way to Patton's heart.
“Ki—Virgil? You in there?” an all too familiar voice called from the other side of his closed door, the anxious trait flinched. What was he doing here? Was he here to tell him something? Had he done something wrong?
Was he upset?
Virgil silently cursed to himself. He should have seen this coming, he'd be rejected and hated by Patton. Roman was upset with him after he had told Patton what he wanted, he had claimed that Patton was the only one who took his side, who always defended him, who he really, truly cared about.
And Roman was upset, because he knew Patton held a special place in his heart for Virgil. And for Virgil to just tell him off like that?
Virgil had tried to explain that he meant no harm, but Roman being the uptight prince he was merely turned his head and stalked away from him.
“Virgil? You okay in there?” the trait flinched as he was brought back to reality, he found himself curled up on his bed, trembling. He suddenly felt sick to his stomach, and lightheaded. He couldn't move, and for a moment he forgot how to breathe.
He was hated.
No one cared for him.
He was alone.
He messed everything up.
He ruined everything.
He made a big mistake.
He was the mistake.....
Shuddering he curled in further in on himself and wheezed for breath. His hands clutched to the sheets of his bed, he shook as coughed and gasped desperately. The edges of his vision blurred and darkened, his chest felt tight, it hurt so much. “Patton.” His voice became small and broken, he wanted—no—he needed Patton. “Virgil I'm coming in okay?” the fatherly trait called and rushed inside, Virgil yelped as the door slammed against the wall of his room.
Patton apologized but suddenly gasped as he saw Virgil's trembling form curled on his bed. He rushed to his side and scrambled onto the bed, he placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, earning a violent jerk from him. “Virgil it's okay, it's just me. I'm not going to hurt you okay?” Patton's soothing and calming voice calmed Virgil down some. Patton scooped Virgil into his arms and held him against his chest, running his fingers through his hair.
Virgil shuddered in his embrace and pursed his lips, trying hard to calm his laboured breathing. “That's it, just breathe Virgil, you're going to be okay.” Patton whispered to him. The dark trait pressed his face against the crook of his neck and took a deep, shaky breath. “I'm so sorry.” He whined. “What are you sorry for? You did nothing wrong.” Patton claimed.
Virgil shook his head. “I never wanted to hurt your feelings Patton, I just.” He sighed. “I want you to see me for who I am, for who I want to become.” He sniffed and wiped at his eyes.
“I really, really like you Patton.” He admitted bashfully.
Patton giggled. “I like you a lot too Virgil.” He claimed happily. But Virgil felt as though he didn't understand what he was trying to say.
He pulled back from the embrace and locked eyes with Patton's. The moral trait smiled and slightly tilted his head to the side. “Everything okay?” he hummed, Virgil shook his head, he wasn't okay, he needed to tell Patton.
“I love you Patton,” he claimed with a dark blush. The bubbly trait quietly gasped, his mouth hung open. “I've been trying to find out different ways to tell you, but I was just so scared. And when I told you that I didn't want you to treat me as a defenseless angel, it was because I didn't want it to be weird when I confessed my love for you...” Virgil explained bashfully.
Patton mentally scolded himself for not realizing it sooner, he had made Virgil suffer, he had hurt him in many ways. Pain squeezed at his heart and tears pricked at the corners of his eyes. “I'm so sorry Virgil, I must have hurt you so much...” he trailed off, not wanting to dwell into the pit of bad thoughts.
Patton held Virgil tighter against him. “Oh Virgil, I love you too.” He sniffed and kissed the top of his head, the anxious trait grew even more flustered, but he also felt relieved, and so happy, and all the pain he went through became a mere memory, nothing more.
Virgil leaned his head against Patton's chest and shut his eyes, he was worn, and exhausted. Yet completed.
A small smile tugged at his lips as Patton quietly giggled and played with his hair. “You know Virgil, we've known each other for quite a while, but for some reason now...” Patton gave him a small squeeze. “I feel like we're closer than ever.”
Virgil blushed, but didn't utter a word. Instead, he leaned further into the warm embrace, feeling closer to Patton than ever. It was nice.
“You know what?” he smiled.
“I feel exactly the same way.”
He pulled back from the embrace and without a second thought connected his lips with Patton's own.
