Trying Too Hard (Prince x Anxiety)
Anxiety only wanted to be a good boyfriend. He was terrified of messing things up, and since he and Roman had just started dating he was more worried about the royal's opinion of him than ever. He felt like he needed to be perfect, or else Roman might think poorly of him and leave.
A slight problem though, was that Anxiety had no idea what people did once they were in relationships. In all honesty, he had never expected to get this far, but now here he was and there was no turning back; he would have to figure things out right away.
He knew Roman was all about giant romantic gestures, and over-the-top cliche dates. While that wasn't something Anxiety particularly enjoyed, or was good at, he felt like he had to try and do something for Roman. So, he had planned to cook for him, a meal Roman loved. He had hoped this would make Roman happy, and that after they enjoyed their meal together they would watch a movie Roman picked out, and fall asleep together on the couch.
Instead, however, Anxiety had caught the kitchen on fire. The alarm had gone off, Patton and Roman both rushing to the scene immediately, Patton putting out the fire as Roman checked on Anxiety, asking him if he was alright and if he had been burned. Anxiety was only able to shake his head, knowing if he spoke his voice would crack. Tears had pricked at his eyes, and when Roman asked him why he was cooking they had finally fallen. Roman was quick to pull him into a hug, Anxiety quietly explaining his plan to Roman.
The other had grinned at him, and told him that he appreciated Anxiety trying. He offered for the two of them to watch a movie anyways, and did his best to cheer Anxiety up. While the other faked being alright, something he did fairly often, he felt incredibly embarrassed. He had tried to do something nice, and he had screwed it up, just as he did with everything else. He tried his best to ignore that, and have a good time with Roman, and while it did make him happy when Roman pulled his close as they lay on the couch, and when he had kissed his forehead and cheeks and nose and told him how much he cared for him, he still couldn't help but feel like he wasn't enough.
His attempts didn't stop there. He didn't attempt anything as grand as the first attempt, keeping it simple; surprising the other with kisses, or randomly commenting on how much he meant to Anxiety, even just seeking him out to sit in silence with him to show Roman how much he enjoyed his presence. He still did try to be the best boyfriend he could be.
Still, when Roman did such nice things for Anxiety like making gifts for him, and taking him out to nice places, and just made him feel special, he felt like he could be doing more.

Anxiety woke up with thoughts of Roman, who had just been in his dream. He reached out for his phone to text his boyfriend, telling him good morning. He stared at the message for a while before sending it, nervously adding a heart on to the end and sending it before he could change his mind. He sat up in his bed, sighing. He wasn't prepared to get up. His phone buzzed with a text and Anxiety answered it quickly, hoping to see that Roman had replied.
"Did you just wake up? Anxiety, it's.. it's 1 in the afternoon."
Anxiety felt his face heat up in embarrassment, locking his phone and setting it back on his nightstand. He hid his face in his hands and groaned-he couldn't even send a good morning text right. How great of a boyfriend was he?
He sighed again, lying back down and decided that he definitely wasn't ready to face the day. He curled back up in his blankets, grabbed his phone again and decided to just stay on Tumblr all day. Surely his absence wouldn't be noticed too much.

It had only been about an hour when I knock sounded at his door. Anxiety groaned, not wanting to face anybody today-especially not Roman. He already felt awful about not being good enough.
Still, he called out saying the door was unlocked, deciding to face whoever it was. If he didn't answer they would most likely barge in anyways.
To his dismay, it was Roman that entered his room, looking very worried. "There you are, I've been looking for you all day." He breathed, walking over to Anxiety and sitting next to him on his bed. "What's wrong, dear?"
"Nothing." Anxiety mumbled, laying on his stomach with his face hidden in his pillow. Roman frowned.
"Doesn't seem like nothing. You've been acting.. off, lately. I'm worried about you." Roman lay down next to Anxiety, wrapping an arm around him. "You don't have to talk about it.. but just now that I'm here for you."
It was silent for a while, and then Anxiety mumbled something, muffled by the pillow he still had his face in.
"I'm sorry?" Prince leaned closer to Anxiety, who turned so he was looking at Roman.
"I love you." He repeated himself quietly, face burning a bright red. Roman also looked surprised, his cheeks pink as well, and a smile forming on his lips.
"I love you too, Anxiety." He whispered back, pressing a kiss to the others forehead.
"But.. well, why?" Anxiety frowned, looking confused. "I.. any time I try to do something nice for you it either goes horrible wrong or is just something small and simple.. I'm not really all that... special." He murmured.
Roman frowned at him. "How could you possibly say that? You're special to me, Anxiety. If you weren't, why on earth would I be dating you? I love you. The fact that you put effort into doing anything for me, big or small, whether it goes right or wrong, is enough to make me smile and fall even more in love with you. That you took time out of your day to think of me, and try to do something special, that's enough to make me the happiest person alive. I love you, Anxiety, and you should never think so low of yourself."
Roman pulled Anxiety close to him in a hug, arms wrapped tightly around him as he pressed a kiss to his head. Anxiety didn't say a word for a while, just held Roman back as tears fell. Finally, he pulled away to look Roman in the eyes. "I love you so much.." he whispered, tears still falling. "Thank you.."
Roman held Anxiety's cheeks, his thumbs brushing away tears. He smiled a dorky smile at Anxiety, leaning forward and capturing Anxiety's lips in his own in a soft kiss, one Anxiety returned quickly. It was a while before they finally pulled away, both smiling at each other.
"You mean so much to me. Even the small things you do for me, they're perfect. I love you, Anxiety. You are amazing.." Roman whispered, Anxiety glancing away with a smile.
"Thank you again, Roman.. I love you too."
