Virgil lived in a word of robotics. Nobody really did much anymore, grocery store? The doors were opened by robots, the cashier, a robot, need to stock the shelf? Bam, robot. Anything common job or manual labor job is done by a robot. Some people get angry with them, saying that the robots broken because they aren't doing it fast enough, or the person messed up their own order so the robot did what was told, making it look like the robot was at fault. Others simply didn't care it was a robot and ignored it unless they needed something like getting groceries, even then the robot wasn't always treated perfect. Then there was Virgil. Virgil was a extremely clumsy person, and constantly bumped into the robots who would then have to restart, or he would knock over a display and frantically try to fix it before the robots came to do so in order not to bug them. He knew that it was fine, they didn't have a brain, nor did they care, all they did was do the jobs they were programmed to do, but Virgil didn't care. If Virgil ever did a minor inconvenience to a robot, he'd profusely apologize and try to help. The robots never seemed to care, but whatever. Virgil hummed, walking into the grocery store.
"Thank you" Virgil mumbled with a nod to the robot who opened the door for him. The robot seemed to scan his eyes, before Virgil moved on to grab some fruit he needed because he ran out. He hummed, grabbing a few apples and putting it in his returnable bag, that was another thing, the world finally came to their sense and started to use reusable bags exclusively. Virgil grabbed just three apples, seeming as that's all that he'd even need. Virgil glanced at a robot who was rushing around this small family who kept getting in its way. It was just trying to restock something. "Could you guys like, move?" Virgil asked, going to the family.
"Excuse me? It's just a robot! It doesn't care, when we're done here it'll be able to restock" Virgil sighed.
"Yeah, but still, you should move out its way so it can do its job easier, don't you remember when we had to do these jobs? It was a pain when someone was doing what your doing"
"Doesn't matter, it's just a robot, it doesn't feel things"
"Just move"
"Ugh! If your gonna be this annoying, then fine, let's go kids we need to go check out" the woman scoffed walking away while the robot finally went to its job restocking.
"Sorry about them, uh robot? I don't know if you guys have names, hope that helped" The robot beeped almost in response and Virgil jumped away in fright. He didn't know they could beep. Virgil nodded to the robot, going back to grabbing fruits. He grabbed some oranges and some carrots. They weren't a fruit but they were still good. Virgil nodded to himself and went to check out.
Virgil sighed, sitting down on his bed with a sigh. Turns out people really didn't care about the robots. He laid down, not caring to cover up. He fell asleep quickly after.
Virgil yawned, getting up from his uncomfortable position on his bed. He flinched, here a large boom from outside. He pushed open his curtain, his hand covering his mouth quickly. His yard was perfect, the flower still stood shaking in the wind and the front lawn was spotless. However, his neighbors yards were bloody and trashed. He quickly grabbed his phone, looking at the news.
Robots we previously thought were brainless, are taking out towns in numbers
Virgil shook in place before a knock came from his front door, he took a deep breath, walking down the steps. He opened the door, seeing a robot, he froze, was he sometimes the robots way?
"Am I in the way? I can move if you need..." Virgil mumbled. The robot made a mechanical laughing noise.
"We're keeping your lawn clean and you safe, thank you for all that you've done, you can rest easy" The robot said in a flat voice. Virgil smiled.
"That's very kind of you, thank you" Virgil smiled. The robot nodded, letting Virgil close the door. Virgil shook his hands out, panic flooding him. What would've happened if he had never done all that? He took a deep breath, calming his self, maybe he should just go back to sleep and hope this was some weird fever dream, yeah, that's why he was going to do.
