Many people believed the subconscious to be a hazy void, clear of definition or any sense, but Logan knew that the streaks of light that shot past his prison were thoughts, shattering off into different directions to be molded and formed into something coherent. It was beautiful, and it was terrifying. He closed his hand around Remus's, holding it tightly as they sat back to back.

They too would be broken into pieces, torn apart until there was nothing left of them but the atomized remains. Then they would be rebuilt, no longer themselves but something that was more suitable and palatable.

Remus was singing, trying to keep his mind of the inevitability.

"There's really just one thing that we have in common,

Neither of us will be missed."

Logan felt his hand be given a squeeze back, and that was the crux of it, wasn't it. Remus didn't censor himself, didn't give in to the pressures of being what was demanded of society. He was chaos, he was unbridled creativity, and he was everything Roman didn't want to be. Patton had hurt Roman, betrayed his trust. Logan could see how he might have decided to regain that trust by getting rid of the parts of creativity that Roman didn't like. It wasn't a good solution, in fact, it was one that would probably make things worse in the long run, but Logan seemed to be the only one who understood that.

He was a bystander in Patton's warpath, a pawn that protected a Duke and shared the same fate. They had been locked in Remus's room together, but Logan could not survive without the logical structures of his room, and Remus couldn't survive without freedom.

"You always said how you loved dogs

I don't know if I count

But I'm trying my best

When I'm howling and barking these songs"

He could hear Remus's voice waiver, and Logan finally turned around to look at him. There were tear stains down Remus's eyeshadow and his eyes were that of a man on the edge of breaking. Logan couldn't help pulling Remus into a hug, this was not his normal method of calming someone, but if he only had this one chance, he was going to take it.

"We count, we matter." He whispered, holding Remus tight. The words were true, even if only between the two of them. Logan cared about Remus. Remus mattered to Logan. "You matter to me."

Remus clung to him, nails sinking into Logan's back. It hurt a bit, but the pain quickly faded as Logan could feel his body fading.

"See you on the other side nerd."

"I'll see you on the other side."
