The clock was ticking by far too slowly. Virgil only had a few minutes before he could be gone from this job forever. For the past two months, he had been finishing up his project with this company but now he could finally leave. His car was already packed and he just had to go on the anxiety-inducing drive to get himself to his new home.
The home he would share with Patton.
A smile lit up his face. He couldn't be home for their anniversary, but he would at least be home for Patton's birthday. He had already sent Patton a gift, and he had apologized fiercely, but he was going to make up for it.
Virgil hit submit on his project, and with that, he was done.
He collected the rest of his things and made his way out to his car, putting his bag down in the front seat and looking at the last few things he had packed. He double-checked it was all stable before looking at his phone. He normally kept it on silent while he was at work. If it was an emergency Patton knew his work phone number. Which meant the message from Patton was probably just something soft and cute, like him being encouraging."
"Hey! Kiddo!" Patton giggled at his own joke, and it was such a sweet sound. Virgil was only 2 years younger than him and they had gone to high school together. The nickname was a remnant of their past. He didn't mind it, as long as it made Patton happy.
"I hope you are having a good day! I've been so busy getting the house together, but it's all worth it. I put up the black-out curtains so that you won't get woken up by the sun, and I turned one of the rooms into a plant room for me. I'm sure it will grow on you." Virgil was sure of that too. "Oh, and I just got the mail. Your letter came in. You are just so cute and sweet, and it had a dog pun in it. That is Pawesome."
Again he giggled and Virgil leaned on his steering wheel, just listening to his fiance laugh and giggle.
"I miss you. Hey, what do you call a-"
Patton's voice was abruptly cut off as Virgil heard the squealing of tires and Virgil looked over at the phone, waiting for Patton to say he was okay. It didn't come.
It sounded like the phone hit the pavement and distantly Virgil could hear someone swearing and could hear the sound of a car door closing. His heart sped up, and he could the cold dread running through his veins. He was just overreacting, this was just his anxiety putting thoughts in his head.
"Someone call 911. Shit, shit, shit." Virgil's breath caught in his throat as he sat up, his eyes locked on the phone. "He's not breathing."
He quickly turned it off, because he couldn't hear that. He couldn't hear what happened next.
"No, no, no," He muttered to himself, picking up the phone and gripping it tightly. He had talked to Patton this morning, he was going to be there in less than 48 hours.
He could already feel the panic settling in as he dialed Patton. This had to be a prank. Patton was fine. The kind-hearted man would normally never do something this cruel, but maybe he didn't realize how far he had taken it. Maybe he just didn't know.
The phone rang and rang.
No one picked up.
He called again. Patton was fine. He had to be fine.
There was still no answer.
His breath was shaky, and he subconsciously began doing his breathing exercises, fighting against his own thoughts. He called one more time.
It rang.
And rang.
And rang.
"Hello,"
That was not Patton's voice. "Hello, my name is Virgil, and that phone belongs to my Fiance, can you please tell me where he is?"
There was quiet on the other line for far longer than Virgil felt he could handle. Before the words came out, he already knew what they were going to be.
"Sir... I have some bad news."
