Arcades, Strangers, and Kisses (Prinxiety)
(Virgil's P.O.V.)
When I realized that I wouldn't be in town for my best friend Roman's birthday, I immediately decided that I would take him out somewhere. Of course, it doesn't help that I have a major crush on him and really want to spoil him. We see each other in school every day, and so as summer and his birthday drew nearer we started talking about what exactly we would do. We eventually decided that we'd probably go to this big Japanese arcade that opened near the mall, a place I've been multiple times but he's been none.
It's a place called Round 1, with a huge arcade, pool tables, bowling, karaoke, and an amazing prize section. I absolutely love it, despite some of the annoying as hell teenagers that hang around the place. I guess I am one of those annoying teenagers though, so I can't complain too much, sadly.
Today is that day though, the day where my mom has just dropped both me and Roman off in front of the arcade, promising to be back later, and driving off to leave us to our own devices. I smile, nudging Roman who is staring at the place in both fear and amazement. Roman, despite his extrovert nature, has some pretty bad social anxiety, along with some other things. I have anxiety too, but there are times when it's worse and better than his. This is a place where it practically disappears. Of course, now that Princey is here next to me, it isn't gone completely thanks to the fluttering in my stomach and constant fear of messing up.
"Looks cool, huh?" I ask and he nods, exhaling sharply as he smiles and nods towards the entrance. "After you." I nod at his proposal and lead the way towards the counter, planning to just give the guy some money and get some money on my card, but then it dawns on me that I should probably ask for Roman's input.
I turn to him and he turns to me, having previously been looking around at the mass amounts of games. "Uh, do you want your own card, or do you just want to use mine?" I ask, frowning slightly. He seems puzzled, going over the pros and cons in his head before finally shrugging.
"Whichever is easiest." He decides, leaving me to just hand the employee my sixty dollars and getting the money put on my one card.
"I'll let you use the tickets to get what you want from the prize section." I say, smirking slightly as Roman hits my shoulder.
"No." He whines, dragging it out as he smiles. "You've spoiled me enough. You already got me so many things." He says, and I nod, looking at him slightly wide-eyed.
"We've been through this, Princey. It's your birthday, I'm allowed to spoil you." Sure enough, we've had that whole conversation multiple times. When I first hinted at how much I was planning on doing for him, he got worried that he'd become dependent on me, but I said I wouldn't let him. Truth be told though, I probably would. Some days I can say no, and other days I'm completely helpless, head over heels for the guy.
Taking my card, we start going around the arcade and playing games left and right, trying out this game and that game. At some point we try a Japanese game, but neither of us understand it well enough to even get through the tutorial, so we quickly abandon it. In total, we manage to rack up quite a few hundred tickets, which isn't great, but good enough to get something Rilakkuma related.
Ever since I introduced those bears to him, Roman's been obsessed with the Japanese plushy and it's whole line of products. I mean, I don't blame him, they're fricken adorable. But still, it's a little concerning. Lots of things about Roman are concerning, and yet I love him anyways. Huh. After a good two hours or so of just straight up gaming, Roman and I head over to the prize section and get a new plushy for Roman before heading to the downstairs area to get some drinks.
Well, Roman gets the drinks. Since I've paid for everything up until this point, he insisted on getting our sodas, so he walks up to the line and waits as I walk over and lean against the wall to wait. I pull out my phone and start playing some puzzle game when I hear someone approach me. Thinking it's Roman, I immediately put my phone in my pocket. However, it isn't Roman, it's some stranger. A teenage boy I've never seen, but he is definitely eyeing me.
"Well, aren't you a cutie." He smirks, but it's not a smirk I like in any way. I immediately feel uncomfortable, looking around for Roman but not seeing him.
"U-Um, thank you?" I ask, starting to turn and back away from the wall, however the boy only follows me.
"Do you, uh, think I can have your number?" He asks, a glint in his eye that only makes me feel more uncomfortable. And then...
"Hey!" I turn to see Roman walking up to us looking absolutely furious, walking in front of me slightly as I stare at him with wide eyes. "Back off." He hisses, and the boy scoffs, rolling his eyes.
"What are you, his boyfriend?" He teases. This of course just makes my cheeks burn bright red, but Roman seems to have this planned out.
"Yes, I am." He says, my eyes widening more and my cheeks burning brighter. The boy picks up on this and chuckles.
"He doesn't seem so sure of that, so prove it to me lover boy." Taking this as a challenge (like Princey tends to do), Roman turns and looks at me with an expression I don't think I've ever seen. And then he does the last thing I ever thought he'd do, and he kisses me.
Now, this freaks me out for three main reasons. For one, I have a major crush on this boy. For two, he has a boyfriend. And for three, this is my first kiss. I've never kissed anyone before, and I definitely did not expect my first kiss to be in this situation under these circumstances. It seems to end the moment it begins, and when I turn to the other boy he seems to be just as shocked as me. Finally he raises his hands and starts backing away.
"All right, I'm sorry dude I didn't realize he was taken." And with that he was gone, but Roman was still fuming.
I quickly put my hand on his shoulder, speaking quietly. "Let's get out of here."
He nods, starting to walk away as I follow slowly behind him. I can't believe Roman Prince just kissed me, me, his best friend, when he has a boyfriend. Once we're outside and away from the noise, Roman finally seems to calm down, but I'm still tense as ever. He notices this and immediately looks guilty.
"Virgil, are you alright?" He asks, and I bite my lip, nodding slightly.
"Um, thank you... For getting him to-to go away." I stutter, still staring at the ground as my brain focuses on not shutting down. However, this doesn't seem to do it for him as he grabs my arm and starts leading me to a secluded area near the building. It's silent for a second, but then he starts talking in that wonderful voice I love so much.
"Listen, I'm really sorry about that, I just got to angry and I didn't know what to do." He tries to apologize, but I just chuckle and shake my head, smiling sadly.
"No, no it's fine. Thanks again. It's just that..." I pause. What would he think? I'm going to be a junior next year and I haven't even had my first kiss yet. Well, hadn't. I guess I just had it. "That was my first kiss." This is when I first look him in the eye, and he looks so goddamn guilty it's heartbreaking.
"I'm so sorry." He whispers and I shake my head, smiling slightly.
"It's fine. I don't mind that it was you, I just wish it wasn't under those circumstances." I sigh, closing my eyes for a second as I contemplate my next few words, in the end choosing a sentence I see fit. "We'll just make sure not to tell your boyfriend, right?" I open my eyes to see Roman looking at me with confusion.
"What boyfriend?" He asks and my eyes widen, smile falling. What does he mean, "what boyfriend"? The same boyfriend I've been jealous of for two years. The same boyfriend I've never gotten to know yet plays a huge role in my life. The same boyfriend you are head over heels for.
"What do you mean?" Is all I ask, and he seems to realize that he forgot one pretty important piece of information.
"I forgot to tell you. I broke up with my boyfriend a few days ago." My eyes widen, my jaw drops, the whole stereotypical reaction to something surprising is my first go to when I get this news. Roman and his boyfriend had been together for years, they loved each other like no couple I'd ever seen.
"Why?" Is all I manage to ask, for it's really the only question on my mind. Roman rarely talked about his boyfriend, but when he did it was nothing but words of love. I never would have guessed he'd be the one dumping the other. Roman's answer starts with a small laugh, and a hand on my cheek as he steps even closer to me.
"Because I realized I loved someone else." He speaks quietly, something that always shocks me when it comes to the prince-like boy, the one that's always loud and extravagant. "I realized that being in a relationship without loving the relationship wasn't healthy for anybody, and so I should listen to my heart and go try to be with the one I do love." He gets impossibly closer, and impossibly quieter, or so it seems.
His voice is slowly lulling me into a hazy sense where all I can focus on is him and me, together, and the possibility of another kiss. Sure enough, that's exactly what happens. He presses his lips to mine, although it isn't rushed or forceful like the last one, no. This one is soft, and slow, giving me a chance to react and kiss back but also giving me the chance to just savor this, savor him. And when we pull apart, staring in each others eyes with smiles on our faces and red on our cheeks, I know that this was the best place to have gone for Roman's birthday.
A/N: This one, admittedly, was a bit of a personal fantasy of mine that I decided to write into fan-fiction. Needless to say, this'll probably never happen, but it's still something enjoyable for story purposes =P
