Midnight Talks
TW: Death, Death Mention
■■■■■■■■■■
Virgil trailed down the street, stepping on small rocks. The lamppost shined down on the pavement, flickering every once in a while.
The once busy neighborhood was silent. Not a single noise to be heard. Only the soft breathing of Virgil and his small footsteps.
The stars weren't out tonight. Their spark gone from the black, night sky. It reminded him of the situation at hand.
Virgil played with the petals of the small flowers he had. His favorite. He couldn't help but smile, every year they would plant them. But that stopped years ago. He wished it never did. But what can you do when life decides to rip away who you loved?
Bushes created a giant wall, the door to the area hidden, just like a secret garden. But instead of blooming flowers, it's filled with dead spirits. Some who went of old age, and others who were forced to go. Just like him.
Virgil pushed the gate open, the creaking noise cutting through the quiet atmosphere. Virgil would have enjoyed the quiet if it weren't for what he was here for.
Graves were lined up in rows, new patches of dirt being piled on everyday. Some tombs were withered with age, while others were bright and new.
He walked down the stone path, his eyes wandered from each stone to the next. Some had flowers while others were empty. Virgil couldn't help but feel bad. Some of them were just forgotten and left to rot. He wondered if the people knew how their family and friends treat them now.
Virgil read the numbers on one,
2005-2006
Just one year of life. If you could even call it one. Virgil pulled two flowers from the ones he had, placing them down.
Good luck, kiddo
He continued walking then stopped. A lone grave, the one he came to visit. Virgil's pace slowed as he came face to face with the grave. He sighed, his breath appearing in the cold air.
"Hey, how are you?"
Virgil sat down in front of the tomb, a weak smile on his face.
"I hope you're well. Sorry I haven't visited in so long. I feel terrible, trust me."
He played with the flowers he had.
"I, brought you flowers, I, hope you like them."
Virgil placed the flowers in front of the grave. He couldn't accept the fact that he was under the ground.
"You're being awfully quiet, you know, why don't you respond?"
Virgil shut his eyes, trying to keep himself from crying. He just wanted to open them and see his smile, see the joy in his bright brown eyes. He just wanted to see him again. To hear his jokes and small fits of laughter.
"Why'd you have to leave so soon? Why did it have to be you..? Why am I talking to your grave, pretending that you're in front of me?"
Virgil laughed quietly, maybe it had been years, but it felt like just yesterday when he got the call.
"..why am I doing this?"
A sob escaped him, his knees folded up as he held them. Tears ran down his face, he didn't understand how someone so full of life and happiness. Could just leave without a goodbye.
"I miss you. I miss you so much. I just want you to hug me again and say everything will be alright. Just like at the hospital, but. You can't and, Dad."
He looked up, placing a hand on the ground where Patton was buried. Tears falling onto the grass.
"I love you."
