Chapter Six

"That was excellent, Wayne. You remembered everything without help, even what happened during your blackout."

Wayne opened his eyes to find Elaine standing by the door. It pulled shut from the other side. She returned to the table with a slender metal case, and put it on the table beside his phone.

"Are you sure there's nothing else? You were the only person unaffected?" Elaine asked.

"That is how I remember it," Wayne said. Chandler still watched in silence from his corner, and Elaine smiled encouragingly. He felt an urge to grab his phone and get out of there. Sarah could be in grave danger, and he was stuck here, talking about his day. He couldn't help feeling a little frustrated. It must have shown on his face, because Elaine jumped back into her questions.

"That wasn't the end of your blackout, though, was it? What happened when you left the cafeteria?"

Wayne nodded. The best way to hurry this along, as Elaine said earlier, was to answer her questions. "I was pretty angry. It had been an awful day--one of the worst of my life--but I've never stayed that angry for that long without a very specific cause. I finally started to unwind in the elevator. When the door opened on the ground floor, I was back to myself, and couldn't remember a thing that had happened since the chair tipped over."
