Chapter 35 - Cara (late autumn, 2024)
Jimin looked so small lying on the hospital bed. His eyes were closed and he wasn't moving at all; if it weren't for the beeping of the machines behind him, I might have thought he had not survived the surgery. Tears forced their way out without permission, leaving wet tracks down my cheeks. I hated to see my strong, energetic mate like this, his body fragile and covered in bandages and wires.
We were still waiting for him to come out of his anaesthetic. When Dr Rosé had come out to brief all of us in the waiting room, I'd been able to convince her to let Yoongi and I in to Jimin's recovery room. My puppy dog eyes, which I had mastered from my Arctic fox, had melted the surgeon's heart. We were both allowed in only if we promised to let Jimin rest and wake up on his own.
I grabbed the back of one of the plush armchairs and began to drag it closer to the bed, the sound loud and screeching as it moved across the floor. Yoongi placed one of his large hands on my shoulder, halting my movement, and with a kiss to my cheek, the chair was lifted effortlessly and placed exactly where I wanted it. I pouted as my feline mate nestled into the chair, wriggling to get comfortable.
"Come on, Baby," he said quietly, as to not wake the resting patient. Yoongi made grabby hands at me and I couldn't resist giving in since he looked so freaking adorable; I loved this soft side of him, the one that he really only showed to Jimin and I.
As I settled onto Yoongi's lap, I sighed contentedly as he wrapped his arms around my waist. Between his warm embrace and his body heat, I finally found myself relaxing for the first time since Jin had burst into my office with the devastating news.
Yoongi, it seemed, was also finding himself relax. I didn't miss the long exhale as he looked upon the Arctic fox; it was like the weight of the world had lifted off Yoongi's shoulders when he finally laid eyes on Jimin's rising and falling chest.
I curled up and snuggled into my feline mate's body. His rhythmic breathing was incredibly relaxing, like he had a metronome chest. As he placed his head onto mine, he murmured lowly, "he'll be okay, Kitten. Why don't you have a nap and I'll wake you up when Jiminie's awake?"
I nodded wearily. As much as I would have preferred to keep watch over my mate so nothing happened to him, I knew Yoongi had that covered. Plus, I wouldn't have been able to keep my eyes open with my mate's purring; Yoongi exploited my weakness against me. The fastest way to make me fall asleep was to be cocooned in the warmth of one of my mates as they cuddled up to me, along with being able to hear the deep, rumbling purrs that flowed from my Kitty.
Argh, he doesn't fight fair sometimes. But I love him for it.
It felt like only 2.3 seconds had passed before I was awoken with whimpering from my injured mate; however, judging by the shadows on the walls, both of us had been asleep for a while. At first I thought Jimin was mumbling in pain. But the more time that passed, the more coherent he sounded... as if he was calling for someone.
"Kit, kitten," he croaked, voice sounded so gravelly and thick from the tubes that were down his throat not long ago. Jimin was trembling in the bed, like he was in the middle of a terrible nightmare. "My kit, my kitten! Where are they?!?" he yelled with alarm, waking with a start.
"Jiminie, you're okay, my love," I said softly, trying to calm him down. The machines were beeping rapidly, the number beside his heart rate alarmingly high.
Yoongi guided me off his lap and onto the side of the bed as he went out in search of a nurse. I ran my hand through Jimin's platinum blonde hair, trying not to pay any attention to the dried red splotches; it was easier to think of them as dried paint rather than what they really were – his blood.
"Cara, where are they?"
I had no idea who this 'they' he was talking about was. The only thing I could fathom was that he was talking about some of the hybrid victims he'd rescued before he was shot. "Shh, you and your team got all the hybrids out of that place." I tried to keep my voice soft and melodic, as if I was talking to a scared animal – which I was to a degree.
"No, not them," he replied, frantically looking around the room for someone. "Where's our young, Angel? Our little kit who's the perfect mix of you and I; he's got the most precious little white ears in amongst his dark hair and the bushiest tail I've ever seen. And our little kitten who looks so much like Yoongi that it's not funny; her gummy smile, grey ears and tail that look like her father but she has the beauty and grace of her mama."
"Jimin, we don't... we don't have a kit or kitten yet," Yoongi said in a calm, unhurried voice as he stood at the end of the bed. I hadn't heard him come back into the room; I was too worried about the wellbeing of my mate.
"B-but... I talk... I talked to them..." Jimin's voice trailed off as he realised something we didn't. "They said I had to fight – for me, for them and their siblings, and for their Mama."
I shared a look with Yoongi, neither of us knew what to say.
Jimin sighed, his hand coming to rest on mine as I was wiping the tears from his cheek. "I met our future children and they were beautiful," he began, smiling warmly as he closed his eyes. "They were so beautiful, Angel."
"With you and Yoongi as their fathers, Foxy, I know they would be the most perfect little kids ever to walk the earth."
A knock at the door interrupted what Jimin was about to say. The trauma surgeon on call, Dr Kai Kim, entered the room a moment later.
I'd always thought of Kai as a breath of fresh air. The capybara hybrid, though he often looked cold and serious, was actually one of the kindest people I'd ever met. It was because of this kindness that Kai was one of the first hires I'd made when I started the hospital portion of Sanctuary; having someone who could operate was a necessity after all.
"It's so nice to see you awake, Jimin," Dr Kai smiled warmly as he came to stand on the other side of the bed from me. "I won't keep you too long so you can get back to being with your mates."
Kai explained that he needed to check Jimin's cognitive faculties, as well as run some other neurological tests. Given that the Arctic fox' heart had stopped multiple times, the risk of oxygen deprivation and an anoxic brain injury was increased each time they had to bring him back.
It was bittersweet watching Jimin go through the tests. On one hand I was extremely grateful that he was alive and seemingly well; however, I also hated that he had gotten shot in the first place. It was that thought that made me wonder if Eun-Woo and Sehun were both okay, since neither had been at the hospital in the waiting room.
As soon as Kai leaves, I need to check on their wellbeing. I hope they are okay. Jimin would be crushed if anything happened to them too.
10 minutes later and Jimin was given a clean bill of health... well aside from the three bullet holes that littered his body. While he would need extensive physiotherapy to help with the movement of his injured shoulder and leg, Jimin would be able to go home with us in a couple of days after his chest tubes were removed. He would, however, need to take things slow so his body could recover properly without the risk of causing permanent damage.
It was a relief to hear there were no cognitive deficits and that Jimin was expected to make a complete recovery. I was left with one looming question though: if he wasn't hallucinating about our so-called children because of a brain injury, did Jimin have a near-death experience where he actually saw and conversed with our future kids?
"Oh, I just about forgot. Jackson asked me to tell you as I was on the way in here, that your partner is now stable enough for a visit, Jimin," Kai said from the doorway. "Apparently his surgery went well. Cara, just let the nurses know when Jimin would like to go visit."
Before we could ask any follow-up questions, the surgeon was out the door.
I could see Jimin starting to spiral. He was worried, with good cause, about what had happened to his partner. I could tell he was also wondering if the rest of his team was okay. I waved Yoongi over, whispering quietly in his ear that I was going to talk to Jackson and find out what had happened to Eun-Woo. I knew out of the two of us, only I would be able to get that information since I owned the hospital.
"Jiminie, I'm going to go and talk to Eun-Woo's doctors," I softly explained, hating the fear that had seeped into his beautiful two-toned eyes. "I'll be right back, Foxy. Yoongi's going to stay with you. I won't be long, Sweetheart."
I bent down and placed my lips on his, sharing our first kiss since he'd woken up. My cheeks were wet as we separated, not from my tears but my mate's. I quickly exited the room, telling myself the faster I left, the sooner I could be back in Jimin's arms, where we'd both feel better.
I was bombarded with questions from Jimin's family and our friends, who had stayed in the waiting room to show support. I quickly explained that Jimin's surgeon had just come to speak to us and that despite needing to be in the hospital for a few days while chest tubes were in, that he would be home soon before he started his rehab. I gave JK a look, silently saying that I wanted Jimin under his care for physio, and thankfully the Boxer understood and nodded.
I was able to persuade Jimin's family into going to our home where they could shower and rest. JK and Tae offered to take Jimin's parents and brothers seeing as they wasn't from Samta. Mrs Park gave me a big hug, whispering in my ear that she couldn't wait to get to know her son's mate better since he talked about me all the time. I assured her that I felt the same way.
I smiled watching my brother's mates talking to Jimin's family like they were close friends as they led the visitors downstairs to the car. I could hear Tae's deep voice explaining that he would give Jimin's family his key to our house so they could come and go while they were here. I loved how my friends and family had banded together to support each other and Jimin's family.
"Bang Chan, I need your help for a few minutes please. I know you're off the clock, but it's important," I said, explaining what I needed my assistant to do. With a nod, he rushed off.
One job down, two to go – Eun-Woo and ordering Jimin's favourite spicy fish and tofu stew.
"Snow White, what's wrong? I thought Jimin was okay," Hobi whined softly, coming to wrap his arms around me in a tight hug.
"Eun-Woo, Jimin's partner, is here as a patient," I sighed. "I was too busy worrying about Jimin to wonder where his partner was, and we just found out he was injured too. He's here as a patient and I should have known that."
I hated that I was so tunnel-visioned on my mate that I hadn't even spared a thought for his police family. I'd asked Bang Chan to contact Captain Bang and find out if Sehun was okay, or whether he was also injured like his two hybrid partners. Because he was human, Sehun wouldn't be brought here for treatment.
"What can we do to help?" Joon asked softly, placing his hand on my shoulder. The comfort I felt from their support was beyond words; I knew the two men would help however they could, no questions asked.
"I know Jiminie will say he's happy with whatever he gets for dinner," I started, picturing my mate's polite face as his hospital food was brought in. "But I know he would much prefer his comfort food..."
"Spicy fish and tofu stew, right?" my surrogate brother said knowingly, smiling proudly as I nodded. Ever since we had dinner as a group at a new restaurant a couple of weeks ago, Jimin had not stopped raving about how their stew was his new favourite food. "Say no more, Hobi and I are onto it. We'll get food for you and Yoongi too. And we'll also grab enough for Jimin's family and drop it in on the way home."
Tears once again welled, but this time it was out of happiness. I didn't know what I'd done to deserve such wonderful people in my life. "Thank you," I choked out, giggling as Hobi's tail tickled my arm when he pulled me in for a hug. "I love you both more than words can say."
"We love you too," the emperor tamarin grinned, pulling himself away from me and tapping my butt with his tail. "Now, hurry and find out about Jimin's partner so you can go cuddle with your mates. We'll be back soon with your food."

"So he's really okay?" Jimin asked once again as we were eating dinner. Ever since I'd come back from talking with Jackson, my injured mate had been clingy with me; I wasn't allowed to sit on a chair, I had to be in the bed with him. He was also constantly asking about his partner's condition.
Eun-Woo had also been injured during his raid on another shelter; however, instead of sustaining a gunshot, he was stabbed in the gut as the perpetrator tried to escape. Luckily, no major organs were hit, but he would be left with a large scar on his abdomen. Eun-Woo was asleep when I went to visit him, so after a quick word to the orderlies asking them to move the gorilla hybrid to his own private room, I went back up to be with my two mates.
Like I had expected, Jimin's eyes lit up far brighter seeing his favourite food coming in than they would have for the hospital food; Sanctuary had wonderful chefs in our kitchens, but I wanted my mate to have the food that would make him happiest.
For the first time all day, my heart was at ease. Observing my two mates eating together was something that, just a few hours ago, I was scared would never happen again. Yoongi's rumbling purr was loud as he ate his beloved lamb skewers and Jimin's eyes were nearly closed in delight as he smiled between bites. Seeing them this happy made us all forget we were in a hospital room and that Jimin had nearly died.
"Yes, Foxy, he's really okay," I reassured my mate between bites. "I've moved Eun-Woo into his own private room so he can be more comfortable, and if he's awake after dinner, we can go visit him quickly. We can't stay long though, you both need your rest."
Jimin nodded his approval. Eun-Woo was like his second brother, so I understood his need to see if his partner was okay.
"Jiminie," Yoongi said softly, hesitation evident in his voice. "Can you tell us more about how you thought you saw our kit and kitten?"
"But I did see them," the fox whined, his ears flattened against his head. "They were as real as you and Cara and me... especially when I hugged them. He looked just like me, my own perfect kit. And your little girl was so pretty and sweet with the most adorable grey ears. They both looked like us, but they resembled their mother even more."
"They sound cute," I said with a smile on my face, trying to picture what they would look like.
"They were perfect, Angel. I wish you both could have met them," Jimin beamed at both of us. "They said I had to fight so they could be born. They, and their siblings, are waiting until they can meet their Mamoo, Daddy and Papa."
Yoongi stilled with a gasp. "H-how did you know I wanted to be called that?" he asked slowly, a look of disbelief on his face that mirrored my own. "I've never told anyone I always dreamed about being called 'Papa' by my kittens."
"I've always wanted to be called 'Mama' if I had children," I whispered, now thoroughly believing what Jimin had gone through was true since no one – not even my family – knew what I wanted my kids to call me. "Tell me more about our babies, please."
Jimin urged me to lie on the bed with him with Yoongi resting in the armchair beside me. I held onto my feline mate's hand as I listened intently. I tried to take in everything my mate said about our babies; they sounded exactly how he described them... perfect.
I found myself drifting off to sleep, dreaming of my two handsome mates and our litter of children.
