Appearance

Luciel is a tall, light skinned man with long, almost black hair that he usually wears in a low ponytail (don't inform him of the few graying hairs on his head) and brown eyes. Since he ditched the royal life, he opts for comfortable, agile clothing that allows him to fight and can be changed easily. You'll most often catch him wearing a plain white linen shirt and simple, earth colored pants. He also enjoys wearing cloaks as they not only keep him warm, but also fit his lifestyle of hiding from respnsability. His sword is always strapped to his belt ready to be pulled from its sheath. When he's reading, he puts on a pair of thin, golden rimmed glasses.

Luciel is said by Felida to look very similar to his father, a comment he immediately meets with disapproval.

Personality

Luciel has always been more of a quiet loner who didn't fit in well in the palace. He was uninterested in business or responsability, he wanted to follow his own passions rather than prepare to inherit a nation at some point. Ever since he was little he thought of himself as much more intelligent than seemingly everyone else in the castle, especially his close family, who failed to understand the importance of things such as stars or Magic or art. And he's not even wrong, just egocentrical, but really, who could blame him for that?

Luciel has an enormous confidence, he knows what he can do, which - in his eyes - is pretty much everything. He's the greatest swordfighter alive, the greatest mage alive and an awsome, sophisticated scientist, he's essencially untouchable, so why worry about a thing? He can just lay back and enjoy his books, free of any of those pesky things the common folk call "consequences". Of course he knew to keep quiet about all that, too. People didn't like knowing they're inferior to someone (Luciel knew he despised the feeling himself) and besides, they wouldn'd understand his genius anyway, even if he tried to explain things patiently.

In the years after he had left the castle, his social skills surprisingly improved. It turns out, other people, even if they aren't all on your level, could actually be pleasant, if not fun to be around. (Too bad he spent so much of his life in this darn prison of a family.)

Luciel can be slightly sarcastic, although his humor is mostly dry if anything at all and mostly consists of banter. He hates alcohol because it "makes people even less aware" and is overall a more serious person. This has the upside of him having a usually very professional demeanor, being calm and at worst coming off as slightly annoyed and tired. The downside is that, if he takes things seriously, he takes them really seriously. Years of being talked down to for his passions have resulted in him becoming extremely defensive if confronted about them, especially on the topic of Magic. While he has accepted that no one believes in it (yet!), he can't stand when people make mistakes or perpetuate misconceptions about what is and isn't real Magic (Do not offer to show him any "Magic tricks". Do not use the terms "witch" or "wizard" in a scientific context. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT refer to Luciel as a "magician" under any circumstances. It's for your own good). Similarly, the genuine friendships he does form he holds in very high regard. There are a few people he would put bis life on the line for (although, admittedly, partly because he believes he is the best at everything and thus practically invincible), most notably Felida once they became close.

Backstory

Born the crown prince of arguably the most powerful kingdom of modern times, it's safe to say that Luciel's childhood was problematic.

He grew up constantly in the eye of the public under the watch of a very strict father and a perfectionist mother, both of which failed to establish a deep emotional connection with either of their children due to their busy and admittedly exhausting royal lives.

Luciel had never enjoyed being the center of attention, which is an unfortunate character trait to have as heir heir to the throne, but he learned very early on to hide his dicomfort whenerver it was expected of him.

He learned to hide a lot of things, in fact, as his parents - his father especially - would dismiss most of his interests as either "childish", "useless" or straight up "toxic" (the last of which being reserved exclusively for Luciel's fascination with the old stories involving Magic, because they apparently "serve no purpose other than to furtherly infest his impressionable mind with fantastical lies about dead people that never even existed", as his father often puts it  without registering the contradiction in his own words), usually a combination of those and similarly degrading statements.

Indeed, Luciel's best freinds had been books for most of his life. Be it astronomical studies or fairytales, geology lexica or legends about mythological heroes, the young prince much preferred the quiet privacy offered by the library to the company of his desaster of a family or their weird, untrustworthy political guests. Reading was one such thing his father detested as a waste of time, but luckily it rarely occured to the king to pay a visit to Luciel's favourite place in the castle.

Another was drawing (Luciel loved to study nature, he kept a stash of sketches of various plants and wildlife hidden somewhere in the castle before he left. I wonder if it's still there), as well as calligraphy and poetry. His father tolerated the dancing lessons Luciel had taken briefly because they had been his mother's idea ("A prince must be taught the proper dances if he is to wed one day." Something about the way his mother had seemingly been planning for his future ever since he was little had always struck him as odd). If he himself had dared to ask for a dance instructor, things likely would have looked different.

Needless to say, the king has very little respect for his son's love of art. The only thing about him his father was satisfied with was Luciel's affinity for with the blade. As soon as he'd learned to walk and pick up a stick at the same time, Karleon had made sure to teach his son how to fight. It's coincidentally also the only thing his father did right raising him, if you ask Luciel. He'd trained him personally until he was about fifteen years old. (Oficially, the king was getting too caught up in all his oh-so-important duties to still be bothered with some mediocre-quality dad-and-son time, but Luciel's theory was that his father had noticed how how capable he had become and feared one day being bested by him. This claim was supported quite infallible evidence, as Luciel had noticed how his younger brother was still receiving extra training sessions from their father.

Oh, we haven't talked about Bennie yet?

It's probably for the better, in all honestly. He and Luciel don't get along very well, probably because he had turned out to be exactly the child their parents had planned to raise the first time they tried. Not only did Bennalon instantly become the new favourite child of the family (which wouldn't bother Luciel all that much, concidering that the spotlight had finally been taken off him), but unfortunately, that little bastard also knows it. And he also knows exactly how to milk that sweet, sweet attention from their parents. Always do as you're told, rat out your older brother when he's wandering onto places he shouldn't be, show off at all times and never, ever disagree with Father.  Which means always disagree with Luciel. No one is entirely sure how Luciel ended up the way he did in a family like that.

At some point in his teens he managed to decypher some writing in an antique book detailing the true arts of Ancient Magic, making him the first person after thousands of years to be able to use Magic again. As he had suspected, Magic turned out to be nothing like what is told in fairytales. And so he experimented. And learned. And wrote journals. And experimented some more, until he had a decent grasp of the basics. All as a closely guarded secret, naturally.

Deep down Luciel had always known that this wasn't his time and place to be, but that strong urge to just... leave... didn't manifest until he was about 17. For two years, he'd planned, packed, prepared everything he could think of, and then one night, he finally turned his brother into the only child he was destined to be (in Luciel's own, spiteful thoughts) and vanished.

Goals and Motivations

When he left, Luciel truthfully just intended to live the quiet life, away from royalty and politics and corruption. He wanted to devote himself entirely to his studies, mainly those of Magic, and collect whatever art and literature he deemed interesting enough (which is mostly everything).

What occupied his mind the most, though, was the mystery surrounding Magic and what he was sure was it's extinction, rather than the lie of it ever existing. What had caused it to disappear all those thousands of years ago? And even stranger, how had the narrative changed so drastically that it blatantly misrepresents real Magic in modern retellings to the point where the general populus denies it's existence? Luciel needs answers, and once he has it all figured out, he wants to write it all down and create the most detailed, up-to-date encyclopaedia on Ancient Magic ever found (You know what? He could probably do even better than the ancient masters themselves. He'd just write the best Magic book ever, how hard could that be? He was the most powerful - the only mage alive in modern times, wasn't he?)

When Felida entered his cozy life unexpectedly, things changed. While he still very much intended to persue his life-long goals, he now needed to make sure this odd girl (who had somehow managed to break through his spells without even realizing!) wouldn't become a threat to his superiority complex. Plus, admittedly, it might be somewhat... fun? To possibly share his passion with someone who has the potential to understand- No, of course, it might be interesting to study the Magical capabilities of someone that wasn't him. Besides, that girl had no clue about Magic whatsoever, so he could control precisely how much she would get to know, no risk at all as long as he kept her close. How convenient that she had her own motivation to travel with him. I mean, what could possibly happen?

Relationships

Karleon and Theresima Tay - Luciel's parents, neither of which he holds particularly high opinions of. While he straight up dislikes his father, he views his mother similar to the maids in the castle - a mere servant to the one pulling the strings, all be it one in a fancier dress. He was almost sure that there were maids who had spent more time raising him than she had. While he never percieved the queen as quite as cold and dismissive as his father, she never supported him outside of her own interests, either, especially not against his father. If there's one thing she was resposible for, it's Luciel's obsession with being good enough, better, the best. He noticed quickly that she was near impossible to please, even harder than his father (who would - at least - occasionally encourage Luciel to practise his sword fighting), which became another reason to avoid her.

Bennalon Angelicia Tay - Luciel's five-years younger brother. The hate is mutual. Even if he doesn't admit it, the idea that Benny would in the end get everything he wanted - the throne, mainly - does urk Luciel a bit, but he'd just have to live with that.

Felida Falkins - Luciel's travelling companion, apprentice and, as he eventually comes to realize, friend and partner. Both highly skilled swordsmen and mages, they make for an incredible team. Initially, they banded together almost out of necessity and although they weren't quite enemies, did have their differences. While Luciel was just supposed to train her to become a better sword fighter and help her avenge her family (otherwise she would expose him as the Runaway Prince), he also ended up teaching her everything he knew about magic and they bonded not only over the adventures they face togethter, but also this shared secret. And - Luciel would never have guessed - it turned out she would teach him a thing or two about magic as well. It might not have been easy from the start, but there's no single person Luciel respects or cares for more deeply than her.

Fun Facts

Luciel takes his second name after his father's - now his own -  sword.

He is a proud tea enjoyer.

When he left, one of the few non-essential items he took with him was his crown, for no reason other than so that his little brother wouldn't get to have it.
