Samirah al-Abbas: The 4th Schuyler Sister

Winner of GodofWisdom33 January contest!

9 days until wedding

"INTO THE UNKNOOOOOOWN!" Alex finished.

"That...was better than I was expecting." Amir admitted

"I still think I was better," Magnus said

"Please," Mallory said, rolling her eyes. "My eardrums are still recovering from your singing."

"You did Taylor Swift wrong," Blitzen agreed, nodding. "I'll never here August the same way again."

It was a Saturday night, and Alex invited everyone to his room for a karaoke night. He had gotten a microphone and everything. After Amir came to the Hotel once, Odin decided he could come one more time.

Samirah, you want to try? Hearth signed, making a "S" for Samirah, while Blitz and Mallory continued to tease Magnus.

"No, I'm good. I don't sing."

Alex looked at her. "Yeah you do. I heard you. That one time. You're like, a Broadway star."

"Yeah, but that was only you! And that was because you made me sing!"

"You sing?" Amir asked her

"No!" Samirah said, the same time Alex said, "Yes!"

"Come on, Samirah!" Magnus said, and started to chant. "Sam-ir-ah! Sam-ir-ah!"

Everyone joined in.

"Fine!" Samirah said, "But only to get you guys to shut up."

She stood up and walked to the microphone. She opened her mouth and...

"What song should I do?"

"Um," T.J. said, "Let's see if your better than Magnus. Style by Taylor Swift."

Samirah rolled her eyes. "Fine. Whatever. Let's just get this over with."

Halfborn started the karaoke version of the song and Samirah started singing.

"Midnight. You come and pick me up no headlights."

Alex was right. She did sound like a Broadway Star.

Magnus and T.J. looked at each other with expressions of shock. Alex had an I-told-you-so look on his face and Mallory had dropped the phone she was recording on.

Halfborn and Blitz were sitting there with they're eyes widened. Hearth was looking around think there was no way she was that good.

"Know exactly where it leads but I, watch us go 'round and 'round each time."

Amir couldn't take his eyes off Samirah. How did he not know this about her? His mouth and eyes were wide open.

"You got that long hair slick back, white t-shirt. And I got that 'good girl' faith-"

Amir started smiling.

"-and when we come crashing down, we come back every time. 'Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style."

As Samirah continued to sing, and Amir continued to stare, and soon their eyes met. They stayed like that for the entire song.

"'Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style!" Samirah finished.

"Was that okay?" she asked nervously.

Everyone applauded loudly.

"Mira," Amir said, "That was literally the best thing I have ever heard. In my life. Wow. If you weren't going to be a pilot, I'd suggest singing."

Samirah's cheeks flushed red. "Thanks, but that's kind of the first time I've ever sang in front of anyone."

"I don't buy it." Magnus said, "You definitely sing."

"Well, when I'm alone yeah, but not with people watching me."

"Oh my gods Samirah," Blitz blurted, "You should totally sing at your wedding!"

Hearth nodded, but Samirah paled.

"You don't have to if you don't want to." Amir reassured her quickly.

"Good, because I'm not!" Samirah said, sitting down next to Alex. "Jid and Bibi have never even heard me."

Why don't you sing in front of anyone? Hearth signed. I mean, I couldn't hear you, but everyone looks amazed.

"I just don't," Samirah said, stroking her hijab.  "It's just something I do when I'm alone. It's just..." she struggled to find the words. "My thing."

"Well..." Magnus said, "Could you at least try at your wedding?"

"Come on, Sammy. It's not that hard. Just sing!" Alex encouraged.

"Guys!" Samirah said, standing up. "For the last time, I'm not singing!" She turned stormed out of the room as frustrated tears pricked her eyes.

"Mira!" Amir called, immediately getting up after her. Alex followed him.

"Chaperone." he told the group.

Amir found his fiancée speed-walking toward the World Tree, ready to go home.

"Samirah! Wait!" Amir said.

"Alex, stop following me!" She turned around  "Oh, it's you."

"Are you okay?" Amir asked, ignoring the comment.

"Leave me alone." Sam turned and kept walking.

"Samirah al-Abbas! You get back here and tell me what is wrong right now!" Amir shouted after her. He wasn't able to reach out and grab her, but the words made her stop and turned around.

"I-do you know the middle school I went too? It was called Malcolm X."

"You mentioned it," Amir said, "I went to another school, the one on the other side of town."

"Yeah, we'll when I was there, I joined the chorus in 7th grade. I tried out for a solo. And I got it. I didn't tell my grandparents. I wanted it to be a surprise at the concert."

"And...?"

"Some kids were...jealous of me," Samirah continued. She didn't have the heart to tell him they bullied her because of her religion. "So...they bullied me into giving them the solo. I dropped out."

"And...know I'm scared to sing in front of people. Because...what if it happens again?"

"Oh my gosh, Samirah," Amir said. "You could have told us. We wouldn't have made you sing."

"I know. But-" she choked on the words as tears leaked from her eyes.

"What about this," Amir offered, "You practice every day, and if you feel comfortable, and only if you feel comfortable, you can sing at our wedding. What do you think?"

Samirah smiled and wiped her eyes. "I think I really want to kiss you right now." she whispered.

Amir gave her a sad smile. "Come on. Let's go inside."

Alex watched the two of them from afar. He couldn't hear their conversation, but Sam had started smiling, which Alex took as a good sign.

They really were soulmates.
