Chapter 1

A long long time ago, a magical flower sprouted from the ground. The flower had the power to heal the sick and injured. For hundreds of years, a man named Alexander Pierce used the flower to keep himself alive and young. Meanwhile, in the kingdom, the king and queen were about to have a baby boy. Unfortunately, the queen became very sick, so the king sent his men to search for the magic flower to save his wife and unborn child. When the king's men found the magic flower, they brought it to the queen and saved her by turning into medicine. As a result a healthy baby boy with long light brown hair was born.

"Isn't he beautiful, George? Our little James." Winnifred said, cradling her baby in her arms.

"Yes, he is, my dear." George replied, kissing his wife's cheek, then his son's head.

The king and queen loved their son, James more than anything else in the world...which made what happened a week later all the more devastating. Pierce had been angry when the king's men had taken the flower. He wanted it back, but all the flower's magic had transferred to the infant prince...more specifically, the prince's hair. Late one night, Pierce had snuck into the castle and went into the prince's nursery.

"Now, stay asleep, small child. All I need is a small lock of your hair." Pierce whispered, taking a pair of scissors out of his pocket.

Pierce was shocked to see that when he had cut a small piece of James's hair off, it had turned a darker brown and lost its magic.

"Sh*t." Pierce cursed under his breath.

He heard footsteps outside the door, so he quickly grabs the baby and climbs out of the window.

"Someone stop that man, he's kidnapping the prince!" a guard shouted from the nursery's window.

Despite being chased by several of the king's men, Pierce was able to get away with James. When the king and queen heard the news that their beloved son was gone, they were heartbroken. For several days, Winnifred had kneeled by her son's crib and sobbed.

"I want every guard out there looking for my son! And I want as many volunteers as possible to join the search. I must have my son back, I won't rest until I have my baby boy back, I won't!" George told the captain of the royal guard, Joseph.

"Yes, your majesty." Joseph nodded.

But, no matter how hard anyone searched, they could not find James. The man who had kidnapped him had taken him far away and hidden him in a tall tower with no doors. There, Pierce raises the child as his own, changes his name to Bucky, and uses him for his magic hair.

"Daddy, why can't I go outside?" a five-year-old Bucky asked.

"The world is a very dangerous place, my son. You're safer here, in this tower." Pierce told the boy as he brushed his very long hair.

"Okay, Daddy." Bucky sighed, disappointed.

Although, that didn't stop Bucky's curious nature. Every chance he gets, he sits at his window and looks out into the world, wondering what it would be like to experience it. And soon he began to notice that every year on his birthday, floating lights would appear in the night sky. The more he saw them the more he wanted to know what they meant and where they come from. When he was seventeen, Bucky had lured a kitten into the tower by tying his extremely long hair to the handle of a basket and pulling it up when the kitten climbed into the basket.

"Hi, little kitty." Bucky said, holding the dirt covered kitten in his arms.

"You need a bath." he chuckled.

Once Bucky had washed the kitten in the kitchen sink, he saw that it had white fur.

"There ya go, all clean." Bucky said, drying off the kitten with a towel.

"Bucky! Let down your hair!" Pierce shouted from outside.

"Oh no, my father can't see you, he doesn't let have any pets." Bucky said, scooping up the kitten and placing it in his room.

"Hey! What's taking you so long!?" Pierce said, getting impatient.

"Sorry, Father." Bucky quickly replied, placing his hair on a hook and throwing the end out the window.

When Pierce has a firm hold of the teen's hair, Bucky pulls him up into the tower.

"How was your day, Father?" Bucky asked, catching his breath.

"It was alright. Here, I got you a new book." Pierce said, taking a book out of his satchel and giving it to Bucky.

"Thank you, Father." Bucky said, smiling.

"Bucky, I'm feeling a little rundown. You think you could give an energy boost?" Pierce asked, sitting in his chair.

"Sure." Bucky nodded.

He sits on his knees near Pierce and lets him hold part of his hair as he recites the healing incantation.

"Good job, my son." Pierce said, giving Bucky a pat on the top of the head.

Suddenly, Pierce heard a soft "meow" come from Bucky's room. Bucky tenses, fearing that his new secret pet will be discovered.

"What the?..." Pierce said making his way towards Bucky's room.

Pierce enters Bucky's room and immediately sees the fluffy white kitten on Bucky's bed, licking itself.

"Father, l-let me explain..." Bucky said nervously.

"WHERE THE H*LL DID THIS CAT COME FROM!? DID YOU GO OUTSIDE!? I TOLD YOU TO NEVER GO OUTSIDE!!!" Pierce yelled, roughly grabbing Bucky's arm.

"I-I didn't, I swear! Father, I would never betray your trust and disobey you." Bucky whimpered timidly.

Then Bucky explains how he got the kitten into the tower.

"Father, please let go of my arm....you're hurting me." Bucky begged, trembling.

Grumbling, Pierce let's go of Bucky's arm. Bucky grimaces then rubs at the spot where Pierce had gripped it tight enough to leave behind bruises.

"The only reason I'm letting you keep this thing is because we're starting to have a mouse problem here. But if it starts to become a nuisance...I will throw it out the window, are we clear?" Pierce told him.

"Y-yes, Father. I'll take good care of it, I promise." Bucky mumbled, looking down at his feet.

After Pierce had left Bucky's room to go make dinner, Bucky sat on his bed and placed the kitten into his lap. He names the cat, Alpine, then finds out that the cat was a girl, and trains her to stay close to him. Alpine soon becomes Bucky's first and only friend, making his solitary life in the tower a little less lonely.
