Kaira held onto Daichi as he guided her to her room. She was silent, and he was too. Their footsteps echoed throughout the hallways as no words were spoken after Kaira's last direction to where he was supposed to guide her. Daichi was still processing what just happened. After being introduced to Miyu, they moved to the living room and talked. Talked about what had happened to Miyu and how she survived the war, about how Kaira didn't even know she was alive until a few days ago.
They also talked about Daichi, so Miyu would get to know him a little better. She was thrilled to meet one of her grandsons, as she never thought to even see one of them.
And lastly, they talked about the current situation in Konoha. It frightened Kaira a little to see how much Daichi already knew, and how determined he was to be a part of this. She now realised she made Sasuke promise her the impossible.
Daichi opened the door, slowly leading Kaira inside. After helping her sit down on the bed, he dragged a chair from the desk to Kaira and sat down in front of her. ''You never told me your eyesight was this bad.'' He murmured. ''Why?''
Kaira sighed, bringing her hand to the bandages around her head. ''I didn't want to worry you guys.''
Daichi pursed his lips. ''You could have told me.''
Kaira clearly heard the hurt and disappointment in his voice, which made her feel guilty, while she did not regret her choice of keeping silent. ''You are already taking care of your girlfriend and your brothers. I can't let you take care of me every day too. I'm supposed to be the parent.'' Kaira chuckled in a mocking manner, deriding herself. ''Altho I'm not a very responsible one.''
Daichi immediately reacted to that. ''That's not true!''
Kaira heaved another breath, pushing herself further onto the bed so she could lean her back against the wall. ''I pushed you and your brothers in Sasuke's care when he returned to the village. That was wrong of me. I shouldn't have run away like that.''
Daichi clenched his teeth. ''You had your reasons.''
''That doesn't matter. It was still wrong of me.''
Daichi took his mother's hands in his and gave it a hard squeeze. ''Many others would have done the same in your situation. It's okay to be selfish sometimes.''
''No, it was childish and cowardly.''
Daichi groaned. Kaira's stubbornness was starting to annoy him. It didn't look like he was going to be able to change her mind, so he decided to try something else.
Reaching into his pocket, he took out the necklace, Kaira's necklace. The one he found on the ground after Kaira had fled the village, the one with the Uchiha crest. ''Would a coward have stayed in Konoha with judgemental villagers for nearly 18 years, enduring the condemnation and trying to live a normal life?'' Daichi murmured as he pressed the necklace into his mother's hands. ''Or would a coward have taken it up against the ANBU?''
Kaira felt the need to deny what he was saying, but he was not speaking any untruths. She was still a coward in some ways, but she knew Daichi wouldn't let this go, so she decided not to answer. Instead, she observed the object Daichi had given her with her hands, recognizing it immediately as the ornament that was given to her by her father.
''You stayed, raised us, and you fought. I couldn't have asked for a cooler mother.''
Kaira froze at his words, halting every movement, even her breathing. Never had she seen herself as a proper parent, let alone a 'cool' one. She'd rather describe herself as a lame mother, one that was failing her family.
When she felt her son's warm hand on top of hers, she clenched her jaw in an attempt to hold back the salty droplets which she felt burning in her eyes. ''Cool?'' She laughed softly through her tears. ''I'm an ex-criminal and a fugitive.''
She was mocking herself. Daichi's words made her incredibly happy, but they felt unjustified. It felt as if that 'cool mother' was a completely different person.
''Yeah, you were a criminal, but now you're working for Konoha. And you're a fugitive because some crazy person set you up.''
Kaira opened her mouth to object, but Daichi saw it and quickly spoke first. ''And don't you dare talk yourself down again. I am happy that you raised me, despite your past.''
Kaira pursed her lips. She felt the strong urge to object again, but held herself back. It was useless and Daichi was determined like this. So instead, she sighed and took Daichi's hand, giving him back the necklace. ''My father gave this to me when I was about your age.''She whispered, and a small smile appeared on her face. ''It's yours now.''
Daichi's eyes widened slightly as he looked at the necklace. She had rarely seen his mother without it, so he didn't expect her to give it to him so easily. ''Are you sure?''
Kaira nodded. ''My father told me it has been in the family for a few generations now. It is meant to be passed on. I'm going to have to get used to not feeling it around my neck now, though.'' She laughed quietly, her soft smile turning into a sad one. ''But I'm sure, when I can see again, I'll love seeing it on you.''
His mother's sad smile made Daichi feel guilty for even holding the necklace. Obviously, it meant a lot to Kaira, and yet she gave it to him.
Daichi opened his mouth to speak, but before he could utter a word, he felt a certain presence approach them. This chakra, it belonged to Sasuke, without doubt.
Kaira easily felt Daichi's chance in behaviour. ''He's here?'' She asked, and Diachi hummed in response.
Kaira moved to stand up, and Daichi quickly got off the chair when he noticed it to support her. She gently took his arms, refraining him from helping her. ''I'm good.'' She spoke. ''You stay here, I'll talk to him.''
Daichi was not pleased with her words. She didn't want Sasuke to get into an argument with his mother because he decided to go against his parents and Naruto by getting himself involved. ''Bu-'' ''You're staying here.'''Kaira interrupted him, this time not with a gentle and soft voice but with a stern one. ''I was wrong about keeping you out of it, so I'll talk to him.''
Daichi sighed, but did not object anymore. He knew it was useless anyway. So intead, he sat back down while Kaira slowly made her way to the door, letting the wall guide her. She could sense his chakra just outside the room, he was waiting for her.
Her hand took the knob, and opened the door. She walked out of the room and closed the door behind her.
