Chapter 5

--Luke--
Later that day we all headed home. I was starting to regret what I had done in that closet with Zinnia. It hadn't seemed like such a big deal while it was happening, but now....
It shouldn't have happened at all.
I wondered if Zinnia was thinking the same things, or if she actually enjoyed it. I mean, I enjoyed it. A lot. But I regretted it. It made no sense.
Zinnia probably didn't even enjoy it.
Jorge is too small.
I bet Zinnia hates me now.
What was going through her head during it?
I know I was thinking of Morgan Freeman's voice.
Was Zinnia thinking of Morgan Freeman's voice?
Probably not.
I tried to push my thoughts away. I was being absolutely ridiculous. Why did girls have to be so fucking confusing? Why couldn't they just be like regular humans and be not confusing?
I opened the door to my house and dropped my backpack onto a chair. My sister was being a weirdo as usual, and my dad was taking care of the baby. No one noticed I had walked in. I went to my room and plopped onto my bed. I picked up my iPad and saw a text from Zinnia:
I had a great time in the closet today, maybe we could do it again sometime? ;)
I smiled to myself. So she had enjoyed it.
But I wasn't too sure I had.

The next day I convinced my mom to let me stay home. I told her that my stomach was hurting and actually managed to get the thermometer to say 109 degrees, don't ask me how. I'm just a genius, I guess.
The whole day was pretty boring, I just hung around and did absolutely nothing.
Until I heard a knock at the door.
I heaved myself out of bed and answered it. To my surprise, it was Zinnia and Tyquesha. They lived pretty close now, but I didn't expect them to just /show up/.
"Hey Luke! We have a whole day planned out for you!" Zinnia exclaimed, pulling me out of the safety of my home.
"What? I'm--I'm sick! I can't leave!" I stuttered an excuse quickly and pulled away.
"You don't look very sick."
"Well I am. Why else would I stay home?"
"Because you wanted to avoid Zinnia?" Ty suggested.
"Is that true?" Zinnia looked hurt.
"No! No, of course not!"
"Alright..." She didn't look convinced, but she continued anyway. "Alright! So we have a series of events planned for today."
"Like what..?" I asked uncertainly.
"You'll see," Tyquesha grinned.
"You're scaring me."
"You should be scared."
And they pulled me out of the house.

They led me to a lake deep in the woods. There was an old sign next to it that I couldn't quite read because it was so dirty and covered in moss and leaves. Besides that, the place was beautiful. The water was crystal clear, and I could see fish swimming at the bottom.
"Wow.." I whispered. "How'd you find this place?" Zinnia just shrugged, beginning to take off her clothes. She wore a /really/ tiny, black bikini. It just barely covered her...parts. I couldn't help but stare.
"Are you coming in or what?" Zinnia canon balled into the lake, swimming a couple feet into the water before surfacing.
"I don't have a bathing suit," I pointed out.
"Skinny dip, then."
"Uh, no."
"Oh cmon, it's not like I haven't seen it." I glanced at Tyquesha. "She's not even coming in."
"Ugh, fine..." I reluctantly stripped down and got into the freezing cold water. Tyquesha sat underneath a tree and leant against the trunk.
My entire body felt numb almost two minutes after getting in, and my teeth began to chatter.
"It's not even that cold!" Zinnia whined.
"Y-y-ye-es-s i-i-i-it-t i-i-is-s!!"
"I can't understand your gibberish, Luke." I just splashed her in response, and she laughed.
"C-c-ca-an w-w-we--"
"STAY WHERE YOU ARE AND PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!" A helicopter loomed overhead and a police officer shouted down to us.
"Damnit.." Zinnia muttered under her breath, quickly swimming away silently.
But I wasn't so fast...

"Who was with you?" The police officer said for the millionth time, slamming his palm against the table. I had been sitting in an interrogation room for the past hours, and the police officer was trying to get me to crack.
"I told you, I was alone."
"No one skinny dips alone! You know that lake is a reservation? You were trespassing." He looked me dead in the eyes, trying to find something, some tell that I was hiding something.
"I was not aware of that fact," God damnit, Zinnia..
"Like hell you weren't! What's your name again?"
"Luke Stowell."
"I'll be calling your mother once we're through with this."
"You can't!" He raised an eyebrow. "She--she's..dead," I lied quickly and ducked my head in an attempt to look upset. I obviously hadn't done a great job.
"We'll see about that." I could feel sweat starting to gather on my forehead and on my palms. I had never been arrested before, and I never thought I'd have the experience. But, of course, I had to become friends with someone who likes to trespass onto private property and go skinny dipping.
Go figure.
Not that I didn't like being friends with Zinnia. She was an amazing person, no matter how much she denies it. Sure, she can be rude, and obnoxious, and an all around asshole sometimes, but she meant well.
The police officer walked out, closing the door behind him. I couldn't see him through the one-way mirror, but I could tell he was talking to someone on the other side, for he came in a couple seconds later with a petite woman wearing too much lipstick.
It was my step mom.
Well, shit.
