Epilogue
I woke up to the ugly screeching of my purple alarm clock, its blaring horns rousing the birds outside my house into flight. “Bro, what problems do you have?” I groaned at it, my voice muffled under my blankets and slammed my hand down swiftly on the little device, effectively shutting it up. “If you had the daily job of waking irritable donkeys such as yourself, you’d scream too,” my best friend drawled and I threw my pillow at him, “Shut up before I kick you out,” I grumbled under my breath.
“Heard you made a bet that you’d write a story?”
“Finished it too,” I chuckled proudly, “I just earned over two hundred dollars overnight.”
“If it helps, I totally supported you,” Jihoon beamed and I snorted, “I’m not giving you any money, boy, so you can stop trying to flatter me into submission.”
“Whatever,” he sulked, tossing me my phone, “your mom asked me to ask you to call her yesterday.”
“And you’re telling me this now?!”
“Yep.”
I threw another pillow at him, “Jihoon, get out of my house before I tell your father that you skipped another three days of university.”
“You wouldn’t do that!” he gasped, his round eyes wide.
“Would too! Now leave!”
Sighing deeply after I heard the front door shut after him, I picked up my phone and started scrolling through my contacts list. My mother was going to kill me. I was just reaching her name when an unknown number labelled S&P caught my attention. I didn’t remember saving the digits on my phone, much less knowing someone named S&P. What did it even stand for? Standard and Poor’s 500? That stock market thing? Maybe I saved it when I was travelling through the United States? It was probably just an ad agency, I consoled myself, remembering that more seconds delayed in contacting my mother, meant more scoldings from my mother, but my hands wouldn’t budge. My fingers were stupidly itching to press the number and see where it lead me, and so that was what I did.
After a few rings later, a tired male voice spoke in a low-pitched tone, “Park Jimin,” the man said, and I froze.
