twenty-three
[twenty-three: why didn't you tell me about Oliver?]
They all end up at Miraz' old castle, everyone splitting off do what they find most fitting whilst Aslan speaks with Susan and Peter - something he had demanded happen as soon as they arrived which left everyone confused as to what to do. In the midst of it all Genevieve had lost Edmund who wanted to talk to her, leaving her to look around the castle as she found a spare room and stood with Ron - thankful that he was still alive and breathing as a happy tear ran down her face.
"I'm so proud of you!" Genevieve whispers as she hugs her younger cousin and ruffles his hair much to his dismay.
"Are you okay?" Ron asked her and Genevieve was quick to smile as she looked at the young boy and sat down on the bed, her smile growing wider.
"I'm fine," Genevieve mustered as she sent him a joking stare. "have you been good for everyone?"
"I'm not a baby Genevieve." Ron stated and Genevieve only gives him a pointed look."but yes I have been."
"Good." Genevieve mustered before the door opened, a figure walking is as Genevieve looked up with a soft smile.
"Knock Knock." Edmund says as he comes out from behind the door, a smile on his face as he looks at Genevieve with pleading eyes. "can I speak to you?"
"If it's okay with Ron?" Genevieve says as she looks to her cousin, the young boy looking between the couple's pleading eyes as he rolls his eyes.
"Alright, I get it... I'm leaving." Ron says as he holds his hands up innocently as he walks to the door, stopping before he leaves with a cheeky smile. "Don't be too loud."
Genevieve's mouth dropped at his words, watching as her cousin walked out of the room with a cheeky smile on his face and her face started to redden as she looked at Edmund who was chuckling with a smile before he approached Genevieve and wrapped his arms around her waist.
"You know he hasn't given us a bad idea." Edmund whispered into her ear and Genevieve only elbowed his in the stomach as he released her, her face reddening even more that just made him laugh.
"As much as I'd love to Ed, the last time we did those activities I found myself nine months later sitting in the castle cradling a child so I think I'll hold out for a while." Genevieve said and Edmund stopped laughing at that, an awkward tension filling the air for a moment before Genevieve sighed as she sat down on the bed. "Why are you here Ed?"
"I want the truth about Oliver." Edmund admitted as he followed suit and sat next to her, taking his hand in hers.
"What do you want to know?" Genevieve asked him softly and Edmund crossed his arms over his chest.
"Everything."
"Everything? I don't know where to start and how to tell you everything at once." Genevieve rambled and Edmund only chuckled before taking her hand and squeezing it.
"How about the day he was born?" He asked and Genevieve smiled at the memory before looking at him. "I'm okay taking small steps. Just focus on that for now."
"It's kind of hard to explain in words." Genevieve admitted and Edmund only frowned.
"Oh..."
"But I can show you..." Genevieve smiled as she pulled out her rings, lilac and gold rays illuminating around the room and Edmund closed his eyes at the intensity
Then he blinked.
Edmund found himself looking into a room with Genevieve by his side, watching a scene unfold with wide eyes.
The room might as well have been empty for all the awareness she had, and when they did talk, touch, gain her attention she found it so hard to concentrate for a second as the pain engulfed her features. To reply she had to find herself from the deepest recess of her own mind and drag herself forward, to use her voice, open her eyes. The faun who was trying to help deliver her baby was telling her that is was time, time to push but she felt like she wasn't ready to do so until someone took her hand and she looked to her side to see Tumnus giving her a comforting smile and she held onto his hand for dear life wishing that it was her husband holding her hand like it was meant to be.
"Are you with me?" She whispered weakly to the faun who only sent her a small smile and nodded towards her.
"Till the end."
With a guttural grunt she did as the faun told and was told to stop, one was somehow enough. She felt the baby crowning, the hot stretching of flesh and she held her breath. Without any further effort the baby slid into the hands of the faun. There in their arms was Little Baby Pevensie.
Their little boy.
Edmund watched as Genevieve shrugged back into her bed, tears forming in her eyes as the babe began to release subtle cries that stopped as he was placed in his mothers arms - who only seemed to smile lovingly at the young child that was her own. Tiny fingers curled around her pinky as others in the room awed at the sight. Edmund watched as the newborn peered through his brand new eyes at what must be such a strange world after his life in the womb. His legs kicked in a tiny jagged motion and Edmund smiled as a tear fell down his cheeks
Edmund looked at the little boy with a smile. His eyes the very same dark brown as his and he heard Genevieve chuckle and he wondered what she was thinking in that moment.
"He's beautiful." Mrs. Beaver said as she walked over to the side of the bed and peered at the newborn. "What are you going to name him?"
"When Edmund and I were twelve we discussed what we'd possibly call our children in the future if we had any for ourselves and Edmund was so prominent on one name but he always assumed he'd have a little girl to spoiled rotten." Genevieve said heartily as she looked at her newborn with a smile and Edmund remembered that conversation very well as he smiled. "He wanted to call his daughter, if he ever had one, Olivia and I loved the idea."
"So what are you going to call him?" Tumnus asked as he smiled over the young womans' shoulder, a proud look in his eye as he stared at the newborn who was looking at his mother with wide eyes.
"I recon Oliver is a good fit instead as if is so close to Olivia. Yes, I've decided. Oliver Percy Pevensie." Genevieve said happily as she looked at her little boy Oliver in her arms and Edmund smiled, the name was perfect,
"It's such a perfect name." Mr. Beaver agreed as he walked into the room, his two children running in after him as they planted themselves on the edge of Genevieve's bed as they stared at the Prince in her arms.
"He's so adorable." Isabelle stated as she stared at the Prince with a smile on her face.
"Can I hold him?" Alex asked nicely only for Mrs. Beaver to shake her head.
"He's only a babe Alex, you can hold him when he's a little older. You both will be looking after him after all." Mrs. Beaver said and the twins faces lit up as they looked at Genevieve with hopeful eyes who only nodded at the two.
"Yeah. Oliver here will need two strong friends to look out for him as he gets older and help him get to know Narnia a lot better. Can I trust you two to look after him?" Genevieve asked with a smile on her face and the two Beavers immediately nodded as they shook in excitement as they looked at the young Prince who they were to be best friends with in the future.
"He would be so proud of you." Tumnus said to the Queen as he placed a hand on her shoulder as he smiled at her. "You'll be a brilliant mother."
Then they were back in reality.
"How did you do that?" Edmund asked her and she shrugged as she showed him the rings with a smile.
"These rings were made from the seed that Narnia was created, it turns out that they can manipulate anything to do with Narnia. I can show memories, I can make things grow - I can see into our world." She whispered the last part and Edmund's eyes widened as he looked at her.
"Did you ever look back at me?" He asked and Genevieve nodded and he frowned. "What did you see?"
"Nothing but a frozen image of you all on a pile on the floor as children again," She says and Edmund only looked at her in confusion. "Time works differently in Narnia. Since I'm not originally Narnian, I guess time froze until I returned."
"Oh..." Edmund whispered before he looked at her. "Why didn't you tell me about Oliver?"
"Before we met again or before you left?"
"Both."
"I didn't tell you before we left as I'd planned to tell you that night, I had something special planned and everything." She whispered and Edmund nodded as he took her hand again and rubbed circles across the back of them.
"And now?"
"I always convinced myself it was a way to protect Oliver, that not telling you would help him because she never met you but I think I was protecting myself more." Genevieve whispered as she took a deep breath. "I've dreaded telling you all this because as soon as we leave Narnia again I'll be engaged to a man who I don't love - a man who doesn't even like women to begin with and I'll never see you again."
"Never say never Genevieve, we always have Narnia." Edmund whispered as he cupped her cheek, watching as she snuggled into his hand slightly with a smile before a frown fell onto her face.
"But what if one day Aslan decides its the end for us?"
"Then we'll treasure very moment until then." Edmund stated and Genevieve only smiled before pulling a crumpled letter out of her bag. "What's that?"
"Oliver left me a letter and I thought you'd like to read it." Genevieve admitted with a smile before passing the letter to Edmund who hesitated before opening it, his eyes scanning it before tears fell from his eyes.
And if you ever meet father again, which I know you will, let him know that I'll always be proud of him too. He was always my hero and I always looked up to him despite what happened. You always told me he was honorable and a good man and you loved him dearly. Though I never really knew him, I hope that when you meet him again that you tell him how proud I am to be his son.
Please mother, tell father I love him.
With those words Edmund started sobbing, his heart aching as he thought of the child he never knew but yearned to get to know. Despite leaving and despite all he did his son still loved him. His son was still proud of him. His son looked up to him for reasons didn't know but Genevieve did.
"He loved you." She whispered as she wiped away his tears with a smile.
"But why?" He asked her, his eyes red as she continued to cup his face - slowly beginning to lean in.
"Because you're his father, no matter what mistakes you made." Genevieve whispered and Edmund smiled at her briefly before pulling her into his lap.
And they finally kissed.
