three

[three: you left me]

The four Pevensie children looked in the direction where the scream came from with confused faces as they watched a short figure run across the sand with a skip in his step. The young boy looked no older than ten and he wore a suit and tie but he had taken off his shoes as he ran across the warm sand. There was a female scream that followed after him as the boy ran towards the Pevensies and almost knocked over Peter himself due to not looking where he was going.

"Sorry sir, my cousin and I are playing tag and she's chasing me. I didn't mean to run into you." The young boy apologized to Peter who only smiled at the boy.

"What's your name?" Edmund asked before he looked ahead and his eyes locked with an all familiar pair of eyes.

"Genevieve." He whispered as a smile formed on his features.

Genevieve Pevensie stepped out from the shadows, stealing Edmund's breath and the heat from his skin. Suddenly his defences are just paper, paper that is being soaked by the rapidly falling briny drops. Before Genevieve can draw in the air her body needs he had melted into her form. He can feel her firm torso and the heart that beats within. His hands were folded around her back, drawing her in closer. He can feel his body shake, crying for the missed time they will never make back, crying to release the tension of the year he had spent apart from her - not knowing hers had been much longer. He went to pull her in closer only for her to push him away as she took a step back to look at the broken look on her husbands face as she wiped the stray tears from her face before she turned to Ron and pulled him into a hug.

"Thank Aslan you're okay." She murmured before giving him a stern look. "If you want to play tag at least let me take these heels off before you start running. I thought I'd lost you."

"Sorry Genevieve." Ronald said with a giggle before Genevieve lifted her eyes to the Pevensies again with an unamused look on her face.

"Hey." Edmund said sheepishly and Genevieve only gave him a blank look which made him frown as he went to step forward but she stepped back. "What's wrong?"

"What's wrong?" Genevieve mimicked sarcastically before she took Ron by the shoulder and told him to stand behind her. "Ron, Lucy cover your ears because you won't want to hear this."

"Okay." Ronald whispered before he took Lucy's hand and walked her over to the tide - not used to seeing the angry look on Genevieve's face.

"You have the audacity to stand here and ask me what's wrong after what you did to me?" She asked rhetorically as her eyes stared daggers into Edmund's eyes which held shock due to her tone of voice. "You left me when I needed you the most and you expect me to forgive you after a simple 'hey'? "

"We never meant to leave." Susan interjected and Genevieve sighed as she pulled her hands over her face as she tried to calm herself down. "Honestly we didn't."

"I know you didn't but it doesn't mean it didn't scar." She muttered as a tear fell freely from her left eye, which Edmund tried to wipe but she slapped his hand away. Don't touch me!"

"Gen-" Edmund tried but she only shook her head as she took another step back away from her husband, the memories haunting her mind again as a wave of sobs erupted from the pit of her stomach.

"Don't 'Gen' me Edmund. You left me waiting for you to come back. You left me to do the one thing I never wanted to do which was to raise a kingdom on my own. And to think, I spent years waiting for you to come home so that I wouldn't be alone again but you never came. I couldn't even pretend I had my mother with me because I gave you her bloody locket on they day you left. You broke your promise to me."

"I'm sorry. Please forgive me." Edmund muttered as he cupped her cheek as they both cried but Genevieve only shook her head for a moment. "Please Genevieve."

"I even, when I eventually left Narnia, kept my wedding and engagement ring which I'm still wearing in hopes of finding you and getting a good explanation. But it appears you're not going to give me one." She states as she turns around and goes to walk towards Ronald.

"Is this the part where you tell me you don't love me anymore?" Edmund asks and Genevieve freezes before turning around. "because that's where it looks like this is going and I did not wait a year to be told that."

"A year? Trying waiting in Narnia for twenty and then having to come home and wait for a year. Did you ever consider my feelings Ed? Ever consider that maybe, just maybe, you had a wife back home who was hopelessly in love with you who would break when everything she had was taken from her with the click of her fingers. Did you ever consider how many nights she counted the stars, waiting and begging that her husband would come back to her and only finding that the morning came sooner over a restless night? Try counting those stars Ed because I was always there for you and I promised you that I would never break your heart  and I kept that but you broke yours. Just think how many nights it will take to count those stars because that's how long it's going to take to fix my heart so I'd better start counting." Genevieve screamed before she stepped back, took a deep breath as the tears fell freely down her face. "I will never stop loving you Edmund Pevensie but I sure as hell am angry at you and it will take a lot more than 'hey' to make me forgive you."

"Well let's take a moment and calm down." Peter said as he stood between the couple before he pulled Genevieve into a hug, which she allowed briefly before the two separated. "It's good to see you Genevieve."

"It's good too see you guys too." She whispered before she pointed a finger at every single Pevensie with a serious look. "I'm still mad at you all though."

"We really didn't mean to leave." Lucy murmured as she pulled the older girl into a hug. "I missed you though."

"I know Lu, I know." She whispered as the younger girl wrapped her arms around Genevieve's waist. "I missed you too, Mr. Tumnus did especially."

"Really?" She asked, eyes wide with happiness whilst Genevieve just smiled at her.

"In fact, the day I left Tumnus told me to tell you that he misses you." Genevieve whispered and Lucy's smile grew before someone tugged Genevieve's arm and she saw Ron. "This is my cousin Ronald Lee. Ronald this is Peter, Susan, Lucy and Edmund."

"From the stories?" He asked with wide eyes and Genevieve nodded whilst the boy looked at them all excitedly.

"High King Peter the magnificent." Peter greeted the young boy with a small smile who looked like he was about to faint.

"Careful Peter, you were always his favourite. Can't have him fainting right now."

"I thought your uncle Marcus didn't have any children." Edmund said and Genevieve didn't look him in the eyes as she spoke.

"He adopted Ron on the day I returned to England, we've been inseparable since." She admitted before she looked up to the ruins in confusion - an unsettling feeling in the pit of her stomach.

"Where do you suppose we are?" Edmund asked as his eyes settled on the ruins.

"Well, where do you think?" Peter asked as if it was obvious and Edmund only rolled his eyes at his brother.

"Well, I don't remember any ruins in Narnia." Edmund stated obliviously and Genevieve only scoffed as she looked at her husband.

"Of course you wouldn't, you've been gone too long." Genevieve stated sadly as everyone looked up and saw the ruins. "I thought you all would remember this beach."

"I thought we were going to Cair Paravel?" Ronald asked his cousin in confusion and she only took his hand as they followed the other Pevensies towards the ruins.

"Look up Ron, I think we are." She whispered and the youngest boy looked towards the ruins with a sad smile.

This wasn't the Cair Paravel he was told about.
