epilogue

[epilogue: my very own safety pin]

four months later

The crisp, white snow had smothered summer, appearing as if somebody has laid a sparkling white sheet over what was once summer and put it to bed for its final rest. However, there is a real beauty in the winter too; the way the snow is sprinkled down from a grey, clouded sky and floats to the ground with grace and elegance, so pure. Usually Genevieve and Edmund would embrace the winter, reminding them of the days they truly connected in Narnia but today was different.

Today there was silence.

The hospital corridor was unnaturally stuffy and the air within had a strong undertone of bleach. The walls were a bright magnolia and were scraped in places from the hundreds of trolleys that had bumped into them. The pictures on the walls were cheap prints of uplifting scenes and above the double doors were various large blue plastic signs with the areas of the hospital that lied ahead. Genevieve and Edmund Pevensie sat in the hospital waiting room, their hands intertwined as they waited for their time to come when they would be called to meet with their doctor. Genevieve's hands were clammy as her heart thudded in her chest, her eyes wide as she looked around the hallway as a ragged breath left her lips out of nerves.

She just hoped everything would be fine.

"You'll be fine love," Edmund murmured as he gave her a comforting squeeze, the gesture calming Genevieve's nerves. "you just have to have hope."

"You'd think I'd be used to this by now." Genevieve chuckled halfheartedly as she took another deep breath to calm herself, Edmund smiling at her as she did so.

"Genevieve Pevensie?" A nurse asked and Genevieve immediately stood up, the nurse turning to her and giving her a comforting smile. "Doctor Banner will see you now."

Genevieve took a deep breath as she hesitantly stood up, Edmund by her side as they followed the nurse into a private room - Genevieve being given the instruction to change into an old hospital gown as Edmund waited for her the the hospital room, his hands clammy as he waited for his wife to return and ensure that she was okay.

"Mrs Pevensie," Doctor Banner started as he gave the woman a smile as she sat down on the hospital bed whilst he set up his equipment. "How have you being doing?"

"Better," Genevieve stated as she took her husband's hand as the doctor applied the cool gel to her skin. "People are really starting to notice now."

"Well that's completely normal," Doctor Banner smiled at her. "any new symptoms?"

"Hunger and cravings, I'm a lot more tied than I sued to be and to be honest I've been having more headache's than usual." Genevieve admitted and the doctor nodded as he wrote a few things down on his clipboard before turning to them with a smile.

"Try to hold still." The doctor said as Genevieve squeezed Edmund's hand as the transducer was placed on her skin.

And then they heard it!

The tiny tympanic heartbeat from the ultrasound wand was the only outward sign that a new life had begun within her.

Genevieve and Edmund both looked at the sonogram screen, the two smiling as they looked at their developing child as they heard their heart beat consistently as it grew inside their mother. Genevieve stifled a happy sob as she looked to the child, happy that Edmund could be here this time and knowing that he wasn't going anywhere.

She knew this child would be their blessing.

"Oh," Doctor Banner stated suddenly, the two Pevensies eyes turning to his.

"Is something wrong?" Edmund asked with wide eyes, squeezing his wife's hand and he looked at the doctor. "Are they okay?"

"She's perfectly healthy." Doctor Banner stated and Edmund and Genevieve shared a happy look as they both smiled.

"She?" Edmund whispered as he looked at the doctor. "We're having a little girl?"

"Congratulations!"

"Did you hear that Genevieve?" Edmund asked happily as a tear fell from his cheek. "We're having a little girl."

"You know what that means?" Genevieve asked as she rose her eyebrow at him, a smirk on her face.

"What are we going to call her? It's your call love." Edmund whispered to her, Genevieve thinking over the names he had thought of - seeing as he couldn't name their child the first time.

"Gael?" Genevieve asked and Edmund smiled, lifting her knuckles to his lips as he placed a kiss there.

"It's perfect."

The yellow ball of fire in the sky changed to hues of orange, and then almost tangerine. It merged with the sky, like juice concentrating into a glass of pure water. The clouds were cotton-candy, as though they blushed at the warm touch of the sun as it set down into the Earth to make the end of the perfect day. Various silhouettes of birds flew home across a sky that was now a perfect magenta; and the sun was half into the water, but its reflection in the sea made it look complete. The mauve of the dusky sky intensified, and in just a while, the biggest star had set, giving way to a thousand others that littered the sky.

Genevieve never thought that she could be so lucky, to live among the love of her life whilst still treasuring the memories of the days they spent in Narnia. The first four months of this marriage had been beautiful - even better than the first and all their time in Narnia because they knew this was for eternity.

They knew they had no world to return too where they would never see each other again.

"Peter and Amelia send their love," Edmund stated as he read off a letter that had been placed in their door earlier in the day. "Professor Kirke has been overworking them recently."

"Well he's still searching for poor Lilliana," Genevieve reasoned as Edmund hugged from behind. "And we know from Caspian that she's in Narnia and isn't able to come back."

"I feel bad for Amelia you know, having one of your siblings just disappear and never return." Edmund stated as he looked at her and sent her a small smile. "I can't imagine if I lost one of my siblings."

"You won't." Genevieve assured as she placed a kiss to his cheek. "Nothing will happen to them."

"How can you be-"

Edmund was interrupted by loud thumping on the front door, the two sharing a look as they wondered who would be visiting them at such an hour. Genevieve released herself from her husband's grasp as the pregnant woman walked to the door - her eyes widening as she looked through the peep hole and immediately opened the door.

"Ron?" Genevieve asked as she opened the door and let her cousin in out of the cold. "What are you doing here?"

"I went back. I went back to Narnia." Ron spluttered with wide eyes and Genevieve nodded as she looked at him. "You have to help me."

"What's wrong?" Genevieve asked with concern written over her features as she closed the door after him - watching as his face paled as he turned to her with conflicted eyes.

"It's Eustace," Ron started as he ran his hand over his face. "I think I'm in love with him."
