-PROLOGUE-

The wind was like ice picks against her face. The rain, a relentless torrent, pounds against her skin, merging with her tears as she flees from what her comfort. Her breath comes in ragged gasps, each step a determined stride towards freedom. Her hair, a wild tangle of strands, sticks to her face, and her clothes cling to her body, heavy with the weight of her burden. The rain seems to amplify the world around her, the sound of her pounding feet a stark contrast to the silence that once dominated her nights.

The girl's eyes are wide with fear, yet they also burn with a fierce determination. She knows the danger that lies ahead, yet she presses on, driven by a desperate need to escape the chains of her past.

She made it to the small cottage. Her hands shaking as she fumbled with the door handle, unable to grasp it, before the door opens. It reveals a woman, eyes mirroring each other. Melody quickly enters the cottage and looks around frantically.

"I have an hour, tops." Melody said, her hands working quickly to take her wet clothes off to replace them with the new clothes that Stephanie, the woman, had prepared for her.

"Hurry, I can only bide you a small amount of time." She ordered as she helped Melody step into a blue hooded jacket and some black jeans. "Take these trainers, you can't run around in them slippers." Melody thanked Stephanie before heading towards the door. "Wait, take this." Stephanie handed Melody a bag filled with items. A new phone, money, some clothes and most importantly, a new identity. "Go."

Melody slipped out of the cottage and ran to bud depot. When she got there, she payed for a ticket to Newport; a small town in San Francisco. She quickly board the bus but as she turned to look out the window she saw the very people she was running from. The police. He had a picture of her but the picture was before she had changed her appearance. She had shorter hair now.

The droplets of the rain against the bus window made it hard for her to see but she could make out the man stopping the bus just after hers had departed.

Melody took a deep breath and leaned into her seat.

She was safe.

For now.
