chapter forty-five

Aziel looked at Indigo, who sat on the couch looking into space. Haven was typing on her phone with a smile, and Flaire was asleep. He looked again at Indigo and noticed she'd been staring at the same spot since he walked in an hour ago.

He knew she was grieving, which meant she had good days and bad days. Today was a bad day, but it seemed different from usual. She looked more down than usual; she hadn't eaten in three days, and he didn't think she had left the house.

"Indigo." He called out, but she didn't answer; she just continued looking. "Indigo."

Forcing herself to look at him, Indigo turned her head, and her eyes watered as soon as she did.

"Baby, what's wrong?" He asked, hugging her as she began crying into his lap, getting Haven's attention.

"What's wrong, sissy?" She put her phone down.

Indigo didn't speak, just crying, then it became loud. She was wailing and shaking, beginning to hyperventilate, causing Flaire to wake up. She opened her eyes, confused, then immediately jumped up, thinking the worst.

"What's the problem? What happened?" She asked.

"We don't know, she just started crying," Haven told her.

Flaire walked into the kitchen, grabbed an unused rag, and put ice in it. She tied a rubber band around it and then placed it on the back of Indigo's neck. Indigo continued screaming, but the shock of the cold made her breathe better.

"Indi, relax and stop screaming." Flaire grabbed her face, patting the ice all over her. "We cannot help if you don't stop."

"He-he-he." She repeated. "He-he-he kil-killed hi-hi-him."

"What are you talking about?" Flaire asked. "Who killed who?"

"Devon!" She yelled as all of them looked with wide eyes. They didn't understand what she was talking about. "Devon killed Sevyn!"

Everybody stopped while she cried harder; it was as if somebody froze them because all their breaths got hitched.

"Wh-what? Who told you that? How-" Flaire stopped herself as tears came to her eyes.

She knew Devon was mad at Sevyn for cheating, but she didn't have him down for taking someone's life.

"I'm going to call him," Aziel said as Flaire tried to calm Indigo down.

"Hello?" Devon yawned, answering, then furrowing his eyebrows. "What's all that noise?"

"I think you need to come over here, but don't bring Genesis."

"Everything good?"

"No." Aziel sighed, shaking his head.

"Give me two minutes."

Aziel hung up while Devon stood, Genesis was asleep, and Alana was in school. He went to the bathroom, released himself, and then swished mouthwash into his mouth. He went to kiss Genesis on her forehead, shaking her a bit.

"Hm?"

"I'm going with your father for a minute; I'll be back."

"Bring food."

"Okay, fat ass." He kissed her, then grabbed his car keys and phone.

He began walking down the block to the house; it took him one minute to get there. He opened the door, and as soon as all of his sisters made contact with him, Indigo jumped up, pulling him by his shirt. Caught off guard, he blocked his face while she dragged him and hit him repeatedly.

"What the fuck?" He yelled with blood coming out of his mouth as Aziel and Flaire pulled her back.

"I hate you! You're a liar!" Indigo yelled.

Haven went to get a napkin to help Devon up. She handed him the napkin as he wiped his busted lip.

"Damn, you're strong as fuck." Flaire said as Aziel held her.

"What the fuck going on?" Devon asked.

"Indigo says you killed Sevyn."

"What? I wasn't even in the country when Sevyn got killed." Devon said.

"Right, he and Genesis took a vacation. We booked it, sissy, remember? Genesis was suffering from postpartum." Flaire said.

"You made Blaire do it! You set Sevyn up to be shot!"

Devon sighed, shaking his head. "Indigo, no-"

Indigo collected all the saliva in her mouth and spat directly on his face. It landed between his eyes as they gasped in shock.

"You're trash, and I wish my sister had better. You're going to jail right along with Blaire and whoever else. I'm making sure the cops know everything."

"Indigo, I don't know where you are getting this shit from, but I didn't send Blaire to kill Sevyn," Devon said truthfully.

"Did you have something to do with it?" Aziel asked.

"I sent Blaire to beat Sevyn up cause he cheated on Indi. I don't know what happened because I never asked what went wrong."

"But you knew!" She cried. "You held me crying, you cried with me, and it was your fault."

"I fucked up Indi, but you my little sister man. I couldn't see you crying over no nigga. That shit hurt me, I moved stupidly, but I didn't wanna lose you by telling you I started this."

"Fuck you, Devon! You're dead to me! I hope you die the next time you step into a fire!" She ran upstairs as his eyes watered.

Haven ran behind her while Flaire and Aziel looked towards Devon, crying. Flaire walked towards him and hugged him while Aziel grabbed his shoulder.

"Y'all think I should've told her?" He asked, tears running down his face. "If I knew what would've happened, I wouldn't- man I didn't-"

"Calm down, relax." Flaire wiped his face.

"I fucked up, but I couldn't-" He stopped talking to begin crying. "Bro, I was like y'all's father because he wasn't here. I would die for y'all, and I just wanted him beat up."

Keygan walked in with Ezra and Tyke; they laughed but stopped seeing the scene. They didn't say anything while Flaire ignored their process.

"I think you just need to give her time to come to terms with this," Flaire told him. "In your eyes, you were being protective, but in her eyes, you betrayed her."

"I felt the same exact way hearing he cheated on her while in jail and imagined being locked up, unable to do anything. These were your daughters at the time, and I can't fault you for wanting to protect them when I probably would've killed him myself."

"She love you Dev, you're our brother. Just let her come to you when she's ready."

"I love you man." Aziel hugged him again as he cried.

Flaire joined the hug, and then Dev walked out of the house, needing the comfort of his wife. He sprinted down the street; Genesis was still sleeping. He jumped into bed and lay on Genesis's chest, crying silently. She furrowed her eyebrows, wondering why he jumped into bed, knowing she had asked him to bring food.

She stopped herself from saying anything when she felt her sports bra getting wet. She grew confused but didn't say anything. She wrapped her arms around her husband, allowing him to cry into her chest.

~

Ezra, Tyke, Keygan, and Flaire sat in the living room watching a movie when the doorbell rang. Keygan stood to open the door; he paused for a minute, then opened the door wider, allowing Blaire and Brat to walk in.

"Blaire, I don't think-"

"Where she at?" He asked. "Tell her to come down here."

"She's not in the right mind space to-"

"Indigo!" He yelled over Flaire.

Indigo hearing her name, pushed past Haven and Aziel. Confused, she stood at the top of the stairs, but her anger began to seethe as she ran down the stairs. Being closest to the stairs, Tyke grabbed her before she could reach him. He almost fell back trying to stop her.

"Damn, you strong as fuck girl." He struggled a bit, not expecting Indigo to be so powerful.

"Get the fuck out my house! I don't ever want to see you or Devon again! You're lucky if I don't go to the cops!"

"I'm not with the dramatic shit, you could hate me. Cool. Never cared to be a villain in anybody's story." He shrugged nonchalantly. "You want to know how Sevyn died or nah?"

"Now you wanna tell me! Where was this story when I was crying and depressed for weeks?"

"I would've told you then, too, but Devon didn't think you could take it. Are you ready to listen, or could I go back to handling my business?"

"Talk."

"Devon texted me after the game, telling me he needed me to handle something, but we could talk in person. I met up with him before his trip, he told me to whoop Sevyn because he played in ya face. Mind you, the nigga on the verge of tears and shit like Sevyn was whooping your ass. Shit, I thought he was cause ain't no way, he was so hurt about you getting cheated on, but then again, I don't have any sisters. Flaire is the closest thing, and I done whooped plenty niggas for her; shit killed too at this point."

"You getting off subject." Flaire chuckled.

"Anyway, I got the drop on Sevyn lo. He was at the phone store with Deuce. I get there, Sevyn in the store, and Deuce is in the car. I'm talking to Deuce, dabbing him up, he thinking it's a coincidence we here, and I'm finna tell him I'm here to fuck Sevyn up when Sevyn comes out of the store. Sevyn knew what I was there for, and you know he ain't ever doing too much talking. We get to squaring up, and Deuce starts making scenes, and he pulls out his gun. I'm telling Ant and 'em to cool out 'cause if any other nigga would've pulled a gun on me, they would've been nonexistent."

"How do you not find this man attractive?" Brat mumbled into Flaire's ear, making Flaire roll her eyes.

"Sevyn tell Deuce to chill, just let us rock. We finally get to fighting, not going to lie Sevyn was strong as fuck. He ain't whoop me, but he probably could've mad enough." Blaire chuckled. "Sevyn starts losing his balance so I stopped hitting him when I hear the gun cock, Sevyn looked at Deuce then tried to get in front of me but Deuce not knowing what the fuck to do with a gun shot em. He shot 'em in his neck and his chest. Ant started shooting, and it was DOA for Deuce."

"So Deuce shot em?" Tyke asked.

"Like I said, he was trying to be something he wasn't."

"I don't believe you," Indigo said, tears falling down her face.

"If you don't believe me call Bison, nigga was with Sevyn and Deuce. He saw everything too before he started ducking from shit."

"So you didn't kill Sevyn?"

"Bro, I would've never killed Sevyn, no matter what. Sevyn was my fucking brother. Y'all don't know the amount of shit I've been through with that nigga. You think you hurt? Imagine watching your brother bleed out and having to leave that nigga to save ya own ass."

"That's a lie! Just because you played football with him doesn't mean-"

"Indigo, you don't know shit." Blaire raised his voice. "And it ain't my place to tell my boy business."

"You think you knew my boyfriend more than me?"

"I'm not finna go back and forth with you, bro; you wanted so bad to know the answers, you got 'em. Ya brother would die for you, and you spitting in his face over a nigga who kept you in the dark about multiple shit."

"Aight, Blaire." Flaire stood.

"Sevyn cheated on me-"

"You don't even know shit 'cause Sevyn ain't even cheat on you, fahreal." He chuckled. "I'm out, you staying or coming?"

"I'll stay with them."

"I got shit to do, so you might-"

"What you mean he didn't cheat on me?" Indigo stopped their conversation.

"I went to the hospital after he woke up, and-"

"How? When? There's no way; I was literally there all day."

"You gon keep doubting me? Cause I got shit to do." He asked, then pulled out his phone. He scrolled a bit, then clicked on a video. "Hear shit yourself."

Indigo gasped, hearing Sevyn's voice; tears filled her eyes as she clutched her chest.

"Shit was not meant to go like that." Blaire's voice said.

"Deuce moved too dumb; I told him the pills keep him off his shit. Shit was becoming a problem, and he told me he had it under control. He was tweaking out the whole day."

"You know you my day one, damn near blood brothers. I would've never pulled no gun out on you or allowed another nigga to. I don't even give a fuck about what you did, niggas cheat everyday."

"B, I know how we rock man. I just wish Dev would've talked to me; shit, not what it seems. I wasn't fucking with that corny ass bitch."

"So put me on."

"I told Indi she was blackmailing me about cheating, but she really was on some shit about Deuce. He robbed some nigga named Quake. He was pillow talking to that desperate ass bitch and she used that shit as some get back. Man, he got on them pills and just fucked his life up and mine. I'm fucked up about him being gone but he was finna go soon, he made too many fucking dumb ass mistakes being high."

"Why niggas didn't tell me shit? I would've handled-"

"B, you my brother, blood couldn't make us closer. I'm not putting you in shit just like I wasn't putting Indi in shit. I love that girl and she never gon know how much cause all she gon do is think about that miserable ass bitch whenever she think about me."

"Imma handle her and this nigga Quake. You got a girl to get better for, worry about that. Love you bro, I gotta get back out here."

"Love you more, I'll be seeing you soon."

The audio stopped as Blaire's hard demeanor dropped; he didn't wanna tell Sevyn's business, but he also couldn't have his business out there, especially to the cops.

"Sevyn loved you, but Devon loves you more. You could be mad at Devon, but holding this against him forever is crazy. Shit place the anger on me, I don't give a fuck but Devon didn't kill Sevyn and neither did I." He said. "Baby, walk me outside."

"I'll be back y'all," Brat said.

"I think I need to be alone." Indigo mumbled, running up the stairs.

Flaire looked around at everyone, it was such a down moo,d and she hated it. She shook her head, going into the kitchen to get a snack, then walked back, standing behind the couch.

"Is everyone okay?"

"That was a lot." Haven mumbled.

"Feel like I'm in a damn soap opera," Tyke said, making them chuckle.

"Daddy, did Tyke show you the baby?"

"Oh, shit right." Tyke pulled the picture out of his wallet with a full smile.

"Damn, big ass head." Aziel said, making everybody laugh.

"Aight now, Z." Tyke warned, still smiling. "I think that's my daughter, but Sage thinks it's a boy."

"You want a boy?" Haven asked.

"I don't care, Imma love em the same. I want her to have a healthy pregnancy, I been looking at women pregnancies and shit. It's so much shit that could go wrong so I been making sure nothing stress her out."

"You're such a good baby father," Brat said, closing the house door.

"You're growing so much." Flaire smiled. "We love to see it."

"Ezra, can we-" Haven nodded towards upstairs.

Ezra sighed, then followed Haven upstairs. She stood by the door, allowing him to walk in first as she locked the door. He turned about to say something, but she kissed him instead; he furrowed his eyebrows, confused, but stopped the kiss once she tried to put her tongue in his mouth.

"What's wrong?" She asked.

"What you on yo?"

"What you mean?"

"I haven't spoken to you in a while, and you come up here to have sex?"

"You're being dramatic, we were just talking."

"Haven asking each other what we doing and what we got planned ain't shit. We basically friends checking up on each other at this point."

"I know we haven't been how we usually are-"

"Usually are? What does that mean anymore?"

"We're usually happy with each other, can't stop touching each other, just in love."

"And when the last time you felt like that?"

"It's been a lot going on, Ezra, I've been going through so much, and I've been changing."

"Do you think you changing for the good or bad?"

"I feel like some parts are good and some things need to be worked on."

"How about the lying part?"

"I haven't lied to you." Haven lied with her heart beating.

Ezra chuckled, nodding his head. "Have you been truthful to me?"

"No," Haven admitted.

"What you lie about then?"

"A few days ago, you asked who I was on the phone with. I told you Maicee, but it was Milly. I don't know if you know Milly, but he's my friend."

"Just friends?"

"Just friends."

"So why you lying about it?"

"Because I never had a boy friend and I didn't know how you'll react. I went about it wrong but my intention was there."

"I ain't never been on no insecure shit dawg so think about the next shit that's about to come out of your mouth."

"Remember when I told you I had a moment with someone? It was Milly. I didn't want you to stop our friendship because of that."

"Basically, you get closer with this nigga every time we beefing?" Ezra chuckled, containing her feelings. "That's some backwards as shit and if it was me, you would've been crying every motherfucking day."

She agreed with what Ezra was saying, and her feelings got a bit hurt imagining if Ezra was doing what she was doing. But she knew she liked Milly and wouldn't stop talking to him.

"You're right, and I apologize. I don't mean to play a victim; we've been off due to me. I just feel it's been me versus everybody lately, and I grouped you into everybody."

"Baby, it's always me and you versus everybody. You my girl and right or wrong, you gotta know Imma stick with you."

"That's my man, and Imma stick beside em." She joked, making him chuckle. "I really do miss you so much."

"How much?"

"Like really wanting to suck your dick much." She whispered as Ezra's eyes popped open.

"You so fucking nasty." He shook his head.

Haven just smiled, waiting for him to undress, she actually did miss Ezra and loved when they were on good terms.

~

Tyke walked into Sage's room seeing her run across the bedroom then go to the bathroom, he plopped down on her bed needing a nap. He laid on the bed, ignoring the ringing of his phone. He looked back up just as she walked back in.

"Where you going?"

"Out to eat."

"With who?"

"This boy named Danny."

"You going on a date?" He scrunched his face up. "A man wanna go out with you?"

"Excuse me?"

"I'm not saying it like that, but he sees you pregnant and still wanna take you out?"

"And what does that mean? Do you think because I'm pregnant, I've become ugly or something? Very much still that girl."

"I just think shit weird; I'm not finna fuck with no girl who pregnant. Fuck I look like messing with a bitch who still got another nigga cum in her?"

"You're an asshole." Her eyes watered. "Why are you here? Leave."

"Fuck you crying for? I'm-"

"Tykeem, leave!" She raised her voice.

"Bro, you on some bullshit. Dumb ass." He mumbled the last part, putting his shoes on.

"That was such a mean thing to fucking say and you see nothing wrong, just leave me alone and make sure you don't say anything to me ever again."

"Gon be hard to do that while you pregnant dumb ass."

"Why are you still talking to me? You such a bitch ass nigga."

Laughing, Tyke made sure to laugh at her face. He went down the stairs, got back into his car, and sat there for a minute. He began driving and once again found himself in front of Maicee's house. He sighed, calling Ezra and Keygan, and neither of them answered. He also called Flaire and Brat, but neither answered.

"Everybody with their person." He mumbled.

He sat there for ten more minutes, opened the car door, and got out. He shook his head, trying to talk himself out of ringing the doorbell, but his legs wouldn't stop until his finger pressed the doorbell. As he waited, he felt he was holding his breath.

The door opened, revealing Marcus, Maicee's older brother. Marcus lit up a bit, dabbing Tyke up, and he went to the side, letting him in. Gina walked out of the kitchen to see who was here, and she smiled, hugging him.

"Now, what are you doing on the neck of our woods? You hungry?" She asked as he followed her into the kitchen.

"I just left Sage house, and something just led me here." He sighed. "I could eat."

"I just made some ziti." She smiled, grabbing a plate and putting some up there. "How's Sage?"

"She's cool; she had an iron transfusion the other day. She was deficient, like you said."

"Once those cravings start getting dangerous, you're deficient in something." She smiled, sitting at the table with him. "What's wrong?"

"Tired." He chuckled. "I didn't feel like driving all the way home, I was going to go to Sage's house, but I mistakenly pissed her off."

"Aw man, what you do?"

"She said she was going on a date, and I basically insulted her, but it wasn't intentional. Niggas be having pregnant women's fetishes, and I just wanted to make sure she wasn't getting preyed on. It just didn't come out like that, though."

"You guys aren't dating?"

"Ma, I don't have another relationship in me." He chuckled. "I can't even think about a relationship, I haven't even been having sex."

"I didn't think the breakup bothered you that much."

"I didn't think so until days became weeks without my best friend." He chuckled to stop the tears. "Maicee, the only girl I ever loved."

"But she won't be the last. I know it's a woman out there for you. You're too much of a good man not to give your love to anyone else." She smiled, taking his hands into hers. "Love your child until you're ready to open up again."

"I'm going to be the best father," Tyke said, a tear escaping his eyes. "I'm going to support my child and make them so comfortable they'll want to talk to me before their friends."

"And I know you are baby." She stood to hug him.

She walked to the kitchen to clean the dishes while he continued eating. They talked for almost an hour. Tyke began feeling like he could fall asleep right there; he could barely keep his head up.

"You wanna go sleep in my room?" Gina asked.

"Ma, it's cool, I'm going to go home."

"Tykeem, you are not driving all the way home. Go up to my room. I have work and won't be here throughout the night anyway. I'm about to leave in a few."

"Thank you, ma." He smiled, standing up. He hugged her again, then lazily went up the stairs, and the minute he got into her bed, he fell asleep.

Ten minutes later, Mac and Mai walked into the house. They laughed, seeing their mother watching TV with her uniform on. They greeted her, then sat on the opposite side.

"Am I bugging or is Tyke's car outside?" Mai asked.

"He's upstairs," Gina said, making her heart stop.

"In my room?"

"No ma'am, he's spending a night in my room."

"Why?"

"He was too tired to drive home. Don't bother him."

"He's not talking to me anyway, doubt that'll change."

"Can you blame him?" Mac asked.

"Don't piss me off."

"Just saying, you hurt my brother."

"And I'll always regret it, but I can't change it."

"Just grow from it." Gina kissed her on her forehead. "I'm going to get out of here; I love y'all. I made ziti."

Gina walked out of the house while Mac went into the kitchen to eat, and Maicee sat on the couch in thought. She walked upstairs, opening her mother's door. Tyke was sprawled out snoring, she smiled, missing the sound she once thought was very annoying.

She watched him sleep for a few more minutes; she walked over to him, kissed his forehead, then closed the door, going to cry in the shower.

~

Tyke woke up feeling his throat was dry, he swallowed a few times, then shook his head, getting up. He checked his phone seeing it was now two in the morning, he checked his notifications seeing it was a lot of them.

He threw his phone on the pillow then stood stretching, he got to Maicee house around seven in the afternoon. He knew he was tired of sleeping like that, so he scratched his stomach and opened the door. The house was very dark, but he knew his way around, jogging down the stairs.

He opened the fridge, got a bottle of water, and drank the whole bottle within one minute. He felt refreshed and hydrated. He went through the fridge looking for something to snack on, he turned his head hearing food steps.

Maicee entered the kitchen, rubbed her eyes, and stopped seeing Tyke there. She thought she was dreaming until she remembered he was staying over.

"My bad, I forgot you were staying over." She mumbled, not getting a response.

Tyke continued going through the fridge, grabbing an orange; he went to the living room, turning on the TV. He scrolled through Netflix for a minute before settling on Tempation Island, he needed to see other people fucked up relationships.

He felt Maicee staring at him, but he wouldn't dare turn his head. He acted like he was so interested in the TV that she sat down on the same couch as him, but further down. He leaned back, confused.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah." He answered quickly.

"I feel like every time I see you, you look so down."

"I'm cool."

"Tyke, I'm trying-" Her voice cracked, making him sigh. "I know I hurt you, it was my fault. I get it, but I don't want you to hate me. I do that enough for both of us."

"I don't hate you bro, I'm just no longer thinking of you. It's just about me and my child now."

"And I love that for you Tykeem, I want you to be happy. I don't want you to feel down or lonely."

"Being lonely is not bad, especially when I know I'm at peace."

Nodding, Maicee moved closer to him. "I miss you so much."

"Maicee, watch out."

"I don't want you to think this is a form of manipulation, Tyke. I just really miss my best friend." She said, wiping her face. "You're my first love, and whenever you're ready to be friends, I'll be there for you."

Wiping her face again, she went up the stairs to her room while he pressed play on the remote. He tried to focus on the TV but couldn't. he stared blankly at the TV for twenty minutes before turning the TV off and standing up.

He went up their stairs going to Gina room but stopped, he shook his head knowing he would probably regret this. He walked to Maicee's door, standing there for three minutes, then turned the doorknob. She was lying in bed with the blanket covering her.

He took his clothes off, leaving himself in his boxers; he walked to the bed, getting in it. He lay behind her as she smiled, and he rubbed her down, allowing her to turn around. She leaned up, connecting their lips as he pulled her close, leaving no space.

She stopped kissing him to touch his already hard on, she went down, connecting her mouth to his shaft as he moaned out.

This would put him ten steps back, but he would enjoy it now.
