Time of Dying

A/N

So, as you may know, I just finished reading The Fault In Our Stars. I was inspired to write this (sad) one-shot, so heads up. Some phrases are from TFIOS, and I'd like to say ahead of time that John Greene made them up. Not me.

Anyways, on we go!

Something was up with Percy Jackson, but he refused to tell anyone. They could tell by the way dark circles appeared under his eyes, and the snappy mood he was always in. When he walked, he walked with a slight limp. When someone would touch him, he'd wince, as if in pain.

A while after he started acting weird, he ended things with Annabeth.

"I'm sorry, but I don't want to hurt you..." That was all he said to her before sulking back to his cabin.

About two days later, Grover came back to camp. Although Percy was glad to see him, he still refused to say anything. The days grew colder, and Percy came out of his cabin less and less. The dark circles got darker, and his breathing got heavy.

About the first week of September, Grover called in Percy's best friend, Darcy Renee. It was a desperate attempt at helping Percy, so the other campers went along with it.

There was something different about Darcy from when they had last seen her. A long scar went from her collarbone to her belly button, which was caused in an accident.

It took a while, but Darcy finally dragged Percy to the dock with her. The others followed, lurking in the bushes. Darcy sat next to Percy, dipping her feet in the water.

"What's wrong?" she asked quietly. Percy looked up at her, sadly.

"After the accident, they gave me a PET scan..." Percy's voice was shaky, "I lit up like a Christmas tree, Darcy....It's back."

A look of realization crossed her face, fear creeping into her eyes.

"Where?"

"....everywhere...." A tear slipped down Percy's cheek.

"Percy!!! Why didn't you tell anybody??"

"I'm a ticking grenade, Darcy. I could go off any second now, and I don't want to hurt anyone. I'm keeping my distance, so maybe it'll hurt less. I even broke up with Annabeth."

"Perce, you're not a grenade, and you're not going off any time soon. You can fight it, Percy. You can beat the cancer....you've done it before."

But she wasn't sure who she was reassuring. BY the way he looked, Darcy would be surprised if he even lasted more than two weeks.

"I can't this time!!" he yelled, tears falling harder, "I can't Darcy....It's hopeless." Darcy took Percy in her arms, letting him sob into her shirt, "I'm hopeless.."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The news spread within hours. Campers mourned over Percy, realizing even if he was still there, they had already lost him. Over a few days, his eyes lost their life, little by little.
Annabeth took it the worst. When she had heard, sobbing could be heard from the Athena cabin. She also might have ruined Piper's shirt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Within a week and a half of their conversation, Percy was rushed to the ER with a failing heart. Darcy was at his side, squeezing his sweaty hand as doctors hurried to get an oxygen mask on him.

By his side, the heart monitor started beeping slower...

"Percy, fight!!"

And slower....

"God damn it Percy, fight!!!"

And slower....

"Percy, you're not allowed to die on me!!"

Until it completely stopped.

Sobs racked Darcy's body as his hand grew cold. His eyes lost what was left of their life, and a nurse carefully shut his eyelids.

"Percy...."

A single tear slid down her cheek, falling onto the boy. Instead of his skin soaking it up, the tear just stayed there for a while, then rolled down, proving it official.

The son of Poseidon was gone, no longer able to fight.
