Wait to start the song.
*Earlier that day*
Tyler kept his head down, avoiding making eye contact with anyone. New schools were always scary, and it didn't get any easier with each transition. If anything, Tyler felt less prepared with each move. The kids in each school seemed to be crueller than the last. Suddenly he was crashing into someone, making him squeak nervously when their books fell out of their hands.
"Sorry! Oh my God! Sorry!" Tyler exclaimed as he scrambled to pick up the books.
He looked up and met a pair a dark eyes. The boy's dark hair was messy and his eyes were tired. Every article of clothing he wore was black, and there was an odd air about him.
"It's fine," The boy breathed out so quietly that Tyler almost didn't hear it.
Tyler froze when he saw the knife on the floor. The two inch dagger was silver with a ruby stone in the handle. The boy picked it up carefully and put it in the front pocket of his hoodie before taking his books from Tyler's frozen hands. His eyes carried a warning as they met Tyler's-Tell anyone and I'll use this on you.
"Sorry," Tyler whispered again breathlessly.
The boy stood up without another word and walked around him, disappearing into the crowd. Tyler watched him go in disbelief, squeaking again when hands pulled him into the adjacent hallway. A short girl about his age with reddish hair and all black clothes was glaring at him.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" She growled at him.
He swallowed hard. "I don't...I bumped into him. He dropped his books so I tried to help. I didn't mean to...."
"Never talk to my brother again. Do you understand me?" She hissed.
Tyler nodded quickly, anxiety twisting his heart in his chest before stuffing it inside of his stomach. "Yes."
"Good," she mumbled. With that, she shoved past him and went into a classroom.
"Sorry," Tyler whispered again although she couldn't hear him.
Once again, it had been confirmed for Tyler. Every school was worse than the last. This one just also happened to have weird kids dressed in black who carried knives and made threats.
He nearly jumped out of his skin when someone grabbed his hand and tugged him out of the stream of traffic. The boy had wide, dark eyes and (thankfully) a blue shirt. He was searching Tyler as if he was expecting to find a bomb under his skin.
"Did they touch you?" The boy asked nervously.
"Who?" Tyler asked nervously.
"The Satanists! Did they touch you?" The boy asked again.
Tyler's eyes widened. "The what?"
"Oh my God. Did one of the Dun kids touch you or not? The last kid they touched disappeared a couple days later." The kid looked desperate.
"I mean, I bumped into-"
"Shit." The kid stepped back, looking at Tyler in horror. "Which one?"
Tyler's heart was threatening to give out from anxiety as the rest of the kids in the hallway watched him nervously. "He was-"
"Holy fuck. The guy? Okay. Come with me." The boy grabbed Tyler's sleeve and led him down the hallway. "I'm Brendon by the way."
"Tyler," Tyler replied quietly. "How do you know they're Satanists?"
"They live in the woods and have all these weird rules. Like, the guy doesn't look at girls. Ever. There's a rumour that he's married, but that's not legal. I guess Satanists don't care about legality though. The girl has a weird brand on her arm of a freaky ass symbol. She has a necklace made of human teeth too." Brendon explained as he led him out of the front doors. The secretary at the desk opened her mouth to argue, but Brendon said, "We're going to the memorial."
Start the song. It's Werewolf Heart by Dead Man's Bones.
The woman nodded, looking sadly at them. "Take your time," she told them softly.
Tyler waited until they were outside to speak. "Memorial?"
"Yeah. A girl from our school went missing a few months ago. We're all pretty sure the Duns took her. She's the only girl that the guy has ever made eye contact with besides his sister."
Brendon stopped him in front of the flag pole. Balanced against it were hundreds of flowers, teddy bears, letters, and a few pictures of a girl. She looked so happy, so far from the boy and girl Tyler had met today.
"Why would they take her?" Tyler whispered, crouching down to look closer at the pictures.
"She was nice to him. No one else is. Why not take her?" Brendon mumbled bitterly. "I told her not to. I told her he was no good."
"You knew her?" Tyler asked.
Brendon nodded, "She's my best friend."
"Why are you telling me all of this?" Tyler asked quietly, looking at the boy beside him.
Brendon shrugged, picking up one of the pictures of the girl and sighing as he looked at her. "Because no one told Ashley when she moved here. I didn't tell her until the few days before she disappeared." He looked over at Tyler. "There's evil in this town, Tyler."
Tyler looked back up at the school. Apart from having a knife, the boy didn't seem dangerous. He just seemed...scared? Tired? Tyler wasn't sure. All he knew was that he didn't look like he wanted to hurt Tyler.
"And you're sure she didn't just run away?" Tyler asked, knowing he was stepping into dangerous territory with the question.
Brendon shook his head solemnly. "She'd never leave without telling me. She isn't like that. Besides, a girl went missing last year too. One disappears every year, and then one of those creepy ass boys doesn't come back to school for a week."
Tyler nodded, watching Brendon set down the picture. "I'm not a girl," he pointed out. "I think I'm safe."
"The Dun boy didn't take his week off. That's never happened before. I'm guessing he didn't want her. Odds are, his creepy ass parents are going to find him someone else," Brendon replied bitterly. "Could be a gay thing."
An uneasy feeling settled over Tyler. "So you just think that-"
He fell silent when the boy dressed in black took off running out of the front doors. Brendon grabbed Tyler's hand, squeezing it tightly. The boy ran right past them, headed for the woods across from the school. Tyler's breath was already caught in his chest when the doors opened again and the girl appeared.
"Come back!" She yelled after him, but he kept running. "Dad is going to be pissed at you!"
"Fuck him!" The boy yelled back.
She glared after him. "I'll tell Mathias!" She yelled suddenly.
To Tyler's surprise, the boy stopped. He looked over his shoulder at his sister. "You won't."
"Don't try me, Joshua. You know I will." Her voice was low, chilling Tyler to the bone.
The boy, Joshua, glared back at her. "Tell him then. I don't care."
The girl's eyes flicked over to Brendon and Tyler. Joshua's followed. Both of the siblings seemed to startle at the sight of the two boys. She looked back to Joshua before raising her hand and pointing directly at Tyler. She didn't say a word, keeping her eyes on her brother. Brendon's grip on Tyler's hand tightened.
Joshua looked nervously at Tyler before looking back to his sister. "Don't do this."
"Go back to class," she said stiffly.
"I can't, and you know it," Joshua growled out.
The girl's fingers raised to form a gun, still pointed at Tyler. Tyler couldn't breathe. He'd never been this scared in his life. This was, by far, his worst first day ever. The siblings were staring each other down, each just as angry as the other.
Joshua broke his gaze away first, looking directly at Tyler with hollow eyes. "I'm sorry," he told him before turning around and running into the trees.
The girl dropped her hand, watching her brother disappear into the trees. She smirked at Tyler before going back inside the school. Tyler was trembling as he looked at Brendon.
"What just happened?" He whispered.
Brendon's eyes were filling with tears as he stood up. "You're next. I'm so sorry, Tyler."
