Ch.12- Bumpers
"Put me in as Bumper Boy." Buffy chuckles and shakes her head.
"Really?"
"Might as well own the truth." I say with a confident tone. Buffy walks away and I sit down on the bench, and tie my shoes. Yes, Bumper Boy. I can't bowl, at all. I can't even roll the ball the right way. I push it down the lane. I've been using bumpers since I've started bowling. As a kid, we used to go bowling a lot for family outings. I was never like the other kids who seemed to effortlessly roll the ball down the lane, I have been pushing the ball down the dinosaur slide. At least it was an advantage for good aim.
"It's a pleasure seeing you here." I turn around and TJ is standing there with a smile. He's everywhere. That blonde haired boy is everywhere and I don't understand it.
"Is it really?" He hops over the bench and sits next to me. He had the same silly grin on his face like usual, and it was bright.
"Always." I giggle. "What're you doing here?" He asks. I point at Buffy who's currently still putting out names in.
"I'm here with her." He nods and looks away at his side of the alley.
"That's cool, I'm here with Reed and Lester." He points at his area, and there's a blonde and a brunette standing there. Lester looks fine but Reed. He looks intimidating. I'm not even going to bother saying hello to him because if looks could kill, I will die on the spot.
"Cool." This is awkward. I have no idea what to say to him even though I always have something to say. It's just weird seeing him here when I'm with someone else and he's with someone else. It's like I'm in a different mindset when I'm with Buffy or Andi, because I know what they're going to say next just by the look on their face. It's either boy drama, life drama or just something different that's going on in school. With TJ, it's always a surprise.
"So..."
"TJ, what are you doing here?!" Buffy was standing there with her arms crossed and a stern look on her face. I really wanted to disappear in this moment. I leaned in close to TJ.
"I thought you apologized." I whispered to him.
"I tried, but she wouldn't listen." Sounds like Buffy. She's a tough cookie, and she has really bad trust issues. "I saw Cyrus and wanted to say hi." He stood up and smiled at me. "I gotta go, see you around." I nod and watch him walk away. Buffy sighs and flops next to me, her arms crossed tightly on her stomach.
"Why is he so nice all of a sudden?" She asks.
"Because he's really trying to be a better person." I respond. I wish she would believe me. She's just holding the dame grudge she's been holding for all these years.
"But.."
"Buff-ay." Oh god. We looked to our side and saw none other than Marty from the party and a brunette girl that stood behind him. Buffy instantly shot up and walked over to him, and the stern look on her face was replaced with a tiny smile, and a hint of nervousness.
"Mart-ay." The girl behind Marty had her arms crossed. I sat there and watched the whole interaction. It didn't look like it was going so well. The brunette looked upset at all points of the conversation, and Buffy and Marty were standing there the whole time, swaying and exchanging awkward interactions. Buffy waved at Marty and came back.
"How'd that go?"
"Well I met his girlfriend. I guess it went well." I looked at Marty. The girl looked mad.
"I wouldn't say that, exactly." Buffy looked at him also. The girl was flailing her arms around and even ended up pointing at Buffy and muttering something. She shook her head and grabbed her purse and stormed out of the bowling alley. That was... unexpected. "Was that about you?"
"I don't know. I didn't say anything."
"It looks like you did." She looked at her feet, which were shuffling.
"I did make a joke about Canada but that's all."
"Sure, blame Canada. What did Canada ever do to you?" Buffy chuckled and pointed at the bowling balls.
"It's your turn Bumper Boy." I picked up a light green ball and placed it on the floor.
"Let's go Cyrus." I heard TJ's voice say from his area. I smile and push the ball down the lane. I step back and look at TJ again. He's shaking his head and smiling at me.
"Two pins." I smile and pick up another ball. I was about to place it on the floor when a voice stopped me.
"Let me help." TJ stood next to me and gently took the ball out of my hand. "Put two fingers in these holes." I nodded and did what he said. Our arms were lightly brushing against each other at every movement. "Put your thumb in the bottom hole." I held the bottom of the ball with my other hand. "And swing your arm back then throw it forward." I huffed and looked down the lane and stared deeply at the pins. Those stupid pins I have never been able to get rid of.
"What if I throw it backward?" He chuckled and placed a hand on my shoulder and squeezed it slightly.
"Just don't hit, Buffy." I nod. He may have been joking but I take jokes seriously. But only, Buffy? What if I hit someone else? Knowing me, I'm bound to hit someone else. "You're up." TJ pushed me up slightly and took a long stride back and sat next to Buffy. She scooted over away from him with a tiny frown but still, she looked amused.
"You got this." I whisper to myself. No matter what, Buffy is going to kick my ass but might as well try. I swung my arm backward slightly, which hurt since this is the only ball my fingers fit in and it's extremely heavy. I took a step forward and threw the ball onto the lane. It rolled fast, and bumped into the bumper once before hitting the pins and knocking down all but one.
I could hear Buffy and TJ clapping and and slight cheering in the background. "Next step, no bumpers." TJ shouted with a slight chuckle, probably knowing I would say refuse to that statement. Buffy wrapped her arms around my shoulders and smirked.
"Congratulations, Bumper Boy." She teased with a knowing smile. TJ stood on the other side of me, and did the same thing Buffy did to me.
"I taught you well." He said in an obnoxious tone. I pushed both of them away while holding in laughter so we didn't look like complete maniacs in the middle of the bowling alley.
"Thank you." I whispered to him, and he put a hand on my shoulder and looked at me. I looked right back, and now we're just staring at each other. It wasn't too long before he walked away, and left me with a tiny blush. What just happened?
