When I finally break through the soil surrounding me, I take a desperate, gasping breath as oxygen fills my lungs.
My fingers are bleeding from clawing my way through the dirt.
I lay on the cool ground, collapsed against the earth as I drag air into my lungs, trembling as my fatigued muscles refuse to work.
My mind races through my last memories, remembering every detail of what happened.
How am I alive?
"That would be my doing," a voice rings inside my head and I yell in surprise at the unfamiliar voice.
"Uh," I say, looking around to see if I could see anyone who the voice could belong to.
"I'm in your head," the voice says and I begin to realize I must be crazy. I must have imagined that my best friend used me in a ritualistic sacrifice and someone slit my throat.
"No, that really happened," the voice says. "You were sacrificed in my name. Flattering and all, but I don't accept non-virgins. Why didn't you tell your own best friend about losing your virginity, by the way? I'm curious."
I ignore the voice, assuming the trauma of being buried in the woods has probably messed with my mental state. My hand trails up to my neck, but I don't feel a giant, bleeding wound.
I feel a rough scar going across my throat, as though it's a wound that had been healed for a few months.
"Yeah, it took me a while to heal you and send you back," the voice explains and I grab my head in my hands in confusion. "You won't remember being here. You were dead, after all."
"What in the holy hell is going on?" I ask out loud to myself, covering my ears with my hands to shut out the voice.
"There's nothing holy about this," the voice rings out loud and clear. "Your friends sacrificed you to the Devil - also known as me. But you can just call me Yoongi; no need to be all official about it."
"Why are you in my head?" I ask, not believing I'm even considering the possibility of not being crazy.
"Because I can be," he answers. "I'm in Hell at the moment, but I can see everything you see. I can hear everything you hear. I can speak to you through your mind. We're connected, you and me."
