Haven't Changed
Castiel
" O-Oh.. Umm, hi. I'm Dean." Castiel wasn't expecting such a deep voice coming from the young boy.
"Hello Dean." He looked up at Dean, their eyes meeting for the second time in a few minutes. Dean reached his hand out to Castiel, his gun already in the back waistband of his jeans. With hardly any hesitation he grabbed Dean's hand, accepting his help up. They stood very close together, their breaths mingling in the few inches between them.
Sam
Sam and Gabriel watched the pair with shared amusement. With a smile on his face, Sam turned to Gabriel. He was surprised, however, to find the boy already looking at him, a smile also on his face. Sam's cheeks heated up and he looked down, causing a small chuckle to escape Gabriel's mouth. They stood there for a moment, forgetting the broken world around them.
"We should probably get going..." Sam said quietly, looking at the smog pouring from the area Castiel and Gabriel emerged from. They started to walk away, towards the trees on the edge of the park. The sun was starting to get low as they made it to an area Dean and Gabriel deemed safe. They set down their packs, deciding on building a small fire to make a dinner of canned soup.
"Sam, why don't you go get us some firewood." Cas took up the job of telling others what to do, but no one minded. "Gabriel, you should go with him-" Gabriel wiggled his eyebrows, motioning at Dean "-to keep Sam safe. Not so I'm alone with Dean." Dean stopped what he was doing, eyes wide as he looked at the ground. Gabriel rolled his eyes, though following Sam without hesitation. Sam smiled as he heard the others footsteps behind him. Gabriel jogged to catch up to Sam, looking over at him when he was walking in line with him. Sam was already smiling at him, watching as he stumbled over a few twigs.
"What are you laughing at?" Sam just shook his head, continuing to collect sticks large enough for the fire. "Ok, fine, be that way." Gabriel said, hurt in his voice. Sam knew it wasn't real though. It was funny, they only knew each other for a short period of time, but it felt like they had been friends since kindergarten. After a few moments they started to make their way back.
Dean
You may have expected flirting and "accidental" hand brushes between Dean and Cas as they waited, but really it was just kind of awkward. Dean poked at the dirt with a stick, sitting on a log he dragged over to be a seat by the soon-to-be fire. He looked up as he heard small laughter, seeing Sam and Gabriel starting to come out of the treeline into the small clearing. Gabriel nudged Sam's shoulder, making him stumble slightly. Dean frowned, watching the blatant flirting. He was about to start yelling at Gabriel to leave his brother alone but watched as Sam smiled at the ground, playfully shoving Gabe back. Dean looked between them, shocked. He heard Cas chuckle behind them, also watching the two.
Sam set the wood next to Dean, sitting on the ground across from Dean. Gabriel walked over as well, choosing to talk to Cas who was setting up where they were gonna sleep. Dean glanced at him as he walked away, making sure he was out of hearing range before turning back to Sam. He wasn't too surprised to see his brother watching as he walked away as well.
"Sam. Sam.... Sam!" Dean poked his shoulder with a stick, breaking him from his trance.
"Huh?" Sam looked over at him, blinking a few times.
"Wow.. That just totally confirmed it."
"Confirmed what?" Sam was suddenly interested, looking over at Dean. His older brother just chuckled, shaking his head.
"So, Gabriel, huh?" He said, raising his eyebrows. Sam's cheeks turned a darker shade, heating up as he found sudden interest in the ground. Dean just laughed again, moving towards the sticks to start a fire. Cas and Gabriel walked over, sitting down around the fire pit as it started to get cold. Dean immediately paused his actions as Sam flinched, his face contorting slightly in pain.
"Sam?" Gabriel was looking at him worriedly, Dean could tell Sam was trying to ignore the pain.
"I'm fine." Sam's words were sharp and short, spoken quickly through his gritted teeth. Gabriel moved quickly, pulling Sam's shirt back to look at his wound, much to Sam's protests. Dean walked over, leaving Cas to tend to the small flame. Dean watched closely as Gabriel's hands delicately brushed over Sam's skin. Sam winced, closing his eyes.
"This is gonna get infected, Kiddo." Gabriel's voice was quiet and comforting, a tone Dean had never heard. "How did this even happen?" Dean looked over at Sam, stepping away to heat up a bit of water for the large, deep, purple gash on Sam's left shoulder.
"I... They got to me." Gabriel paused, looking up at Sam, shocked.
"What?" His voice was quiet, wavering, as he pulled back. Sam looked hurt, looking down. "No... You're joking... You couldn't have..." Gabriel backed away, his eyes wide. Sam bit his lip, trying to not get emotional. Cas watched them carefully, judging the situation logically.
"Sam has been hurt for a while, and he hasn't... changed. But, there is still a possibility he will. That puts as all in danger." Castiel thought, looking over at Sam, studying him. "Why hasn't he changed?" Dean looked over at Cas.
"I don't know.."
