Imprisoned
(17 y.o. Ezra)
" . . . err . . " Sabine mumbled, slowly blinking. Her thoughts were mushy, and she couldn't focus. She shook her head to clear it, and took a deep breath. She then opened her eyes fully, and saw she was looking sat a grey wall. That, she registered, was not good. She then felt something brush against her ear and moved to scratch it, but she couldn't move her hand! Appaled, she looked down and took everything it: she was sitting up on the ground in an Impereal cell, with her arms chained to her legs, and she just now realized that a chain wrapped over her arms and around her chest several times, binding her to something. Sabine frowned, and was about to try and figure out what she was bound to when . . .
"Sabine?" She heard a quiet voice say from behind her. Her eyes widened.
"Ezra?!" She whisper-screamed.
"Sabine!" Ezra said, this time in a slightly louder and more relieved tone. "I thought you'd never wake up." Sabine rolled her eyes, turning her stress into sass.
"Yeah, well, now I'm awake; you satisfied?" She tried tossing her head in frusteration but only succeded in hitting Ezra's head, making her even more mad. She gritted her teeth, waiting for Ezra to make some salty response.
When he didn't, she sighed, and realized it was she in the wrong.
"I'm sorry Ezra, I didn't mean to flip out on you. I just. . . "
"Its ok Sabine," Ezra replied gently. "I understand." They sat, chained together, in peaceful silence, until Ezra came up with an idea.
"Hey Sabine," Ezra asked in a thoughtful tone.
"Yeah Ezra?" She replied, refusing to let too much hope enter her voice.
He continued, "Do you think it would be possible to move these chains up and over our heads?"
Sabine took a moment to think it over. She tested how tight they were, and found that they weren't to bad. She shrugged.
"Yeah, its worth a shot," she replied.
"Ok," Ezra said."I don't know if this is actual fact, but I think heads are usually longer than they are wide, so . . . "
" . . .we should turn our heads sideways when we do it." Sabine finished for him. She couldn't see it, but Ezra grinned to himself.
"Yeah, right," he said. "Ok, ready?"
Sabine replied "Ready as I'll ever be." And they began. Before they had started shrugging them higher, Sabine had thought the chains were somewhat loose under her chest. Now she found it VERY difficult to get it up to her neck. Ezra and Sabine pushed as hard as they could against each other, trying to make an extra centimeter or two that would make the difference. At one point Sabine couldn't even take a deep breath.
Finally, after what seemed like ages, and several breaks to catch their breath, they got it up to their necks. They took another break, gasping for air, heads down, wishing prisoners got water.
"You . . . Ready?" Ezra panted.
" . . . Yeah . . . " Sabine replied.
And they began again. Fifteen minutes of pushing, pulling, shrugging, nodding, and occasionally bitting the chain, they got it off. With a disgusted grunt, Ezra swing his head for the last time, flinging the chain into the corner with a clang. They both heaved a great sigh of relief, and lay down, heads touching.
Sabine's mouth twitched when she felt how soft Ezra's hair was. Unfortunatly for her, it was at the same time Ezra decided to reach out through the force to see if she was ok. Ezra blushed and frowned when he felt that.
"Uhh . . . Sabine? You think my hair is soft?" Sabine felt heat quickly creeping up her neck.
"What?! How did you know? I mean . . . " she said, realizing her slip up.
"No no no . . . " she began despertly trying to cover it up.
"No, its not what you think, its, uh, your hair . . ." By now Sabine was so hot she was heating up the room. Ezra muffled his laugh and decided to rescue her.
"Hey," he said gently, and she stopped talking. "Its ok. I think your hair is soft too. I also think its very beautiful." Ezra couldn't believe he had just said that. What was he thinking? Oh force, Sabine was going to kill him . .
But Sabine just smiled, suprising even herself.
"Thanks Ezra," she said simply. Ezra relaxed. He then decided to reach out through the force again, out of boredom, and he searched a little deeper this time, closing his eyes. After a minute, he felt sadness there, and also a lot of guilt. He frowned, wondering what that was from. Staying in her for a moment longer, trying to penetrate her thick walls, he felt anger, too. He then opened his eyes, staring at the gray ceiling.
A non-force weilder, looking at her, would have thought that she was just having a normal boring day. But Ezra knew better. And, if just for lack of having anything better to do, he decided to ask her.
"What's wrong Sabine?"
Sabine opened her eyes when she heard Ezra's calm and innocent voice. She knew he had been prodding in her mind. She could feel it ever so slightly. That's why she put her mental firewalls up. But it seemed he had been able to get past them, which suprised her. She hadn't known he was that strong.
But back to his question. She closed her eyes to think about it. Should she respond with the truth, and be open with the kid? Lie to him, in hopes he didn't find anything while in his force search? Don't say anything?
Ezra could feel the indecision as Sabine debated on how to answer his question. He was in no rush though, and he knew it would be hard for Sabine to open up. He also knew she would probably try to lie to him the first time or two. So he gave her time to think and process things.
Sabine decided that she didn't feel like bawling in front of Ezra, so she would have to risk lying. She didn't want to lie to Ezra, but she really didn't want to cry in front of him.
"I'm fine," she said in a huff. Ezra turned his head so his nose was just under her ear.
"Sabine," he murmered, sending soothing waves through the force. "Its ok. I promise I won't tell anyone." He didn't know what else to say, so he just left it at that.
Sabine was at war with herself. Should she tell him? She really didn't care that he promised not to tell anyone else. She would rather tell everyone on the Ghost crew what she was feeling rather than him. But she didn't know why. So, in a moment of brilliance, she made up her mind to ask him about that.
She turned her head but pulled it back a bit, so they weren't quit touching. Ezra had his eyes closed and his brow furrowed, like he was deep in concentration. She studied his face for a moment, noticing the twitching of his eyebrows, the squinting of his eyes, even his left one which was covered by his bang; and his mouth, frowning ever so slightly. She wodered what he was thinking about, and if it had anything to do with the peaceful feeling she suddenly felt.
He then opened his electric blue eyes, and smiled at her. It was then she knew she could talk to him; actually talk to him.
She took a deep breath, and faced the ceiling, receiving the soothing waves gratefully.
"Ezra . . . When you were fighting that Inquisitor . . . I was scared. I was SO scared. I've watched you fight him before, but this time, it was different. I don't know why. I just, I felt like it would never end. And like, when it did . . ." She took a ragged breath, fighting tears that were coming on much too easily.
" . . . When it did end, I was so scared it would end with you injured, or worse! And that's why I interfered, and I'm sorry for getting us caught I just w watch that red saber come anywhere closer to you!" She squeezed her eyes shut, shoulders shaking, fighting the tears with everything she had. She would not give in, she would not give in, she was a Mandolorian, she was not a crying baby. And then she heard Ezra speak.
"Sabine," he began, talking quietly right into her ear, so close every word shook her hair.
"Sabine, before I joined you guys, I had no idea what that felt like. I was a loner. A no one. I cared about no one, and no one cared about me. It was much simpler that way." His voice had taken on a distant sound to it, like he was revisiting that time in his mind.
"But then I stumbled upon you guys. Unknowingly at the time, it was the best day of my life. I grew closer to all of you, and that's when I began to understand what your feeling right now.
"At first it was only with Kanan. I couldn't bear to watch him fight all those evil lords. It stabbed me in the chest every single time, and it wasn't even me fighting! But then, as we all started fighting together more often, I began to feel what you felt with all of you." His voice then took on a softer tone.
"But I've never felt it as strong as when I see you fighting. What I feel with the others, its like three times worse watching you." Sabine's entire body froze, even her tears, at those words. She turned her head and stared wide-eyed at the teen. He now had tears at the edges of his eyes as he spoke.
"I watch as your surrounded by Stormtroopers, out of bullets, with only one grenade left. I'm busy fighting a sith and can't help you. Do you know what's that's like?" And then he said it.
"Watching your loved ones about to die, and not being able to do a SINGLE thing to help them? Do you know how that feels?!" The tears were rolling now, down both of their cheeks, but neither seemed to notice. They were both staring at each other, taking in what Ezra had accidently let slip out.
"Sabine, I, I'm so sorry . . I uh, didn't think. . . "
"Yes," Sabine whispered. Ezra's normaly rectangular eyes were completly circles by now.
" . . . Yes?" He squeeked.
"Yes," Sabine repeated. "Yes, I understand that pain. When the Empire destroyed my world. When Hera almost died. When you go into battle." She couldn't have said it any quieter. But it couldnt have blown Ezra's mind anymore.
"Really?" He whispered.
"Yes," Sabine said for the third time, laughing through her tears a bit. By now they both knew what the feeling that they kept mentioning was. It was love. Ezra loved Sabine so much that he didn't want to see her get hurt, and Sabine loved Ezra so much she didn't want to see him in danger. It snapped into both of their heads at the same time.
"Do you love me?" They asked each other incrediously, so simultaneously that they almost didn't realize that they had both said it. Sabine blushed and said,
"Just say it one the count of three." Ezra nodded excitedly. Sabine grinned.
"One . . . Two . . . Thre-" She was cut off by a certain someones lips. She blinked, shocked, but closed her eyes and embraced it. When they pulled back, both were grinning.
"Three," Sabine said, and laughed. Ezra laughed too. Then they both just stared laughing so hard, that they couldn't breath a few minutes later. They both lay down when they had caught their breath. Sabezra grinned at each other.
"I love you," she said.
"I love you too," he replied.
Oh my gosh that was rough. I litteraly didnt plan any of that. Totally off the head madness. I am definatly not doing that again . . .
