Chapter Ten
"Sun's Bright Rays!" Rufus casted his hands out in front of him, aiming for the three very large, and very mad trolls that were about to emerge from the cave. A bright light hit the three trolls, and they were instantly turned to stone. Rufus smiled and turned to where he thought Celesti was, "Success! We did it!"
Except, there was no Celesti there. Rufus looked around him and only saw the girl's bow and quiver, and Rogue's cloak, the one she was borrowing. He picked up the items and yelled out, "Celesti! We can go save everyone now!"
He paused, waiting for a response. In the bitter cold air of the mountain, he waited to hear an echo of her voice. Becoming a bit more worried, he yelled out, "You can see Rogue late tonight if you hurry up!"
Rufus knew that he was in trouble if he arrived at the guild, short a member on his temporary team. Not with Master Jiemma, in fact, he probably guessed that the large man would be proud of him, but with Rogue. He calculated that if Rogue got mad, then Sting might join in on the battle as well. So, Rufus looked around him, trying to see if there was any sign of his partner.
As he was looking towards the way he came, a shimmer of light caught the corner of his eye. His focus turned to that object, and saw that it was a rather odd looking stick, with a shiny thing at the top of it. He started to walk towards the object, amazed at how it could shine like that with the sun's rays, until he saw it was not really a stick, but a magic wand. Celesti's, to be precise.
"Oh no..." For the first time in a long time, Rufus was legitimately concerned about a guildmate of his. He looked into the valley below and yelled out, "Celesti?"
A few seconds later, ever so faintly, he heard a voice say, "I'm here Rufus."
"How did you get down there?" Rufus had to make sure that he wasn't losing his mind over the voice.
A few seconds later, the voice replied sarcastically,"Gravity, and I forgot this was here."
He was relieved that Celesti was okay, well, at least alive. He had to make sure she was in one piece, or else he would lose the bet, "Are you injured or hurt?"
Celesti replied a few seconds later, "Actually, no, but I'm freezing! Snow can be a rough landing, but it's cold down here."
"Do you know how to get out?"
"Not quite. Get the people trapped out, and see if you can make a makeshift ladder or something."
"What will you be doing in the meanwhile?"
"Trying to find a way out. The cave, and the valley aren't that deep in the mountains, so I should be able to walk my way out eventually!"
Rufus felt encouraged that the girl could walk, so he yelled out, "Stay alive."
"Same to you, Shakesphere." Rufus wanted to snap at the girl, but he was more worried about his task at hand. He put the cloak in Celesti's quiver, the quiver on his shoulder, and held onto Celesti's bow, and walked into the cave where his partner had come running out of a few minutes ago.
Celesti, on the other hand, had no idea which way was out. Looking around her, she saw the same amount of light on both sides. By recalling the path on the mountain, she decided to go to her right, hoping that she would be able to rendezvous with Rufus or the survivors of the trolls. The walk seemed to stretch on and on to the lost girl, and the cold made it much worse.
She started to see the light change to her left, so she ran towards it. This is my way out! Ha! I can totally tell Rufus that I made it out by myself.
Instead, Celesti found a cave. Cracking her split knuckles, as she tried to control her shievers, she muttered to herself, "Time to kick some troll butt!" She dashed into the cave, only to find...ice shining in the sunlight, the source of the light coming from a hole on the roof of the cave.
Yet, she could sense a source of magic in the cave. The ice just looked like ice to her, but there was something peculiar about the center piece of ice. She looked around the cave and saw that there were no trolls, relieving her, but saw a staff instead. The top of it was red and gold, and in the outline of a bird. Connecting the top to the ice was a long brown rod, similar to Celesti's wand. She smiled as she approached it, "Maybe I'll be able to use this instead of my wand to get back to the village!"
Celesti wrapped her hands around the rod and pulled, easily popping the rod out of its icey holder. A bright light started to shine around Celesti and her new wand, making the girl gasp aloud. She felt warm because of the light, and as a result, closed her eyes and embraced the light. Her body felt weightless floating in this light, and the girl was too tired and cold to fight it. She smiled to herself as the light wrapped her in its warm embrace, "I think some sleep wouldn't hurt me."
All Rufus and the others saw was the valley light up in a golden and red light. Rufus gasped as he ran towards the edge and yelled below, "Celesti! Are you in danger?"
An older woman came up to him and looked below to the valley and smiled to herself, "She isn't in danger, in fact, she's probably going to save us all."
"How?" He wanted to gather information about this to really see if Celesti was safe.
"Legend has it that in that valley, a long forgotten power laid in slumber, waiting to be awakened by someone. No one would expect it, but this person would be able to summon the spirits of the dragons killed. That is, once the person tames that spirit."
"So now what?"
The woman sighed, "We go back to the village and wait for her to return. This is a journey that only she alone can take."
Rufus nodded grimly at the woman and motioned for everyone to follow him back down the path, hoping that Celesti would survive the journey ahead of her, along with Sting and Rogue not finding out. Little did Rufus realize that the two Dragon Slayers were already heading his way.
When Celesti and Rufus left, earlier that day, Rogue felt so heartbroken. It was as if a piece of him had left on that train. So he held Frosch and walked back to the guild, wondering how to pass the time until Celesti came back.
Fortunately, he didn't have to wait long. Rogue and Frosch made it back to the guild hall a few moments later. The moment Rogue stepped into the guild hall, Sting grabbed his shoulder and slammed him into the wall. Rogue was shocked by this behavior, until Sting whispered in his ear, "Lesti's in trouble. Can't explain here. We've got to move, but lucky for you, I've got a cover up. There's a mission nearby where Rufus and Celesti went to. I'll take the mission, while you get Lesti. Leave Lector and Frosch here, alright? The Master's stipulation for us was no Exceeds."
Rogue nodded as Frosch hopped out of his arms to join Lector, who was near Yukino, "Alright, but you owe me an explanation."
"Not here, not now." Sting then let go of Rogue and dragged the Shadow Dragon Slayer out of the door, "We'll be back in a few days!"
The two Dragon Slayers were on the next train to Peace Village, the location of their request. Not a whole lot of talking was done, as the two Dragon Slayers were dealing with motion sickness, but when words were said (usually when the train stopped), Rogue found out that Master Jiemma had sent Celesti on a suicide mission. Jiemma knew the girl was a threat to his guild, so he planned on trying to have Celesti die on a mission. This sickened Rogue more than a train ride ever could.
The two of them made it to the small village only to see a bright beam of light radiate on the mountains. Without even talking, the two dragon slayers dashed towards the light, hoping that they did not just witness a guild member's death.
Little did they realize that they were just witnessing a transfer of magic happen to Celesti. The light that she now rested in was transforming in front of her eyes, and she saw a magnificent field start to form. Gently, she placed her feet on the grass and looked around. The staff was in her right hand. Trees were scattered about her, and the sun was shining. She looked in front of her and gasped when she saw not one, but two dragons. One was black as night, while the other was white as a cloud.
The white one smiled at her, and Celesti knew that she had nothing to dread. She started to walk calmly towards the two dragons, feeling the warmth of the light around her. As she approached, she bowed to the two dragons while holding the staff in both hands, "I hope that I didn't offend you!"
The white dragon scoffed at her and smiled, "You did nothing to offend us, Celesti Gryffindor. In fact, I, along with Skiadrum, welcome you."
"Where am I?"
"A realm not quite with the living, nor the dead. You can say that this is the place where the Tamer and her spirits meet."
"Tamer? But that's not me! I'm just an Auror from a world far, far, away from here."
Skiadrum, the black dragon, spoke, "Weisslogia and I are well aware of your arrival. All dragons in this world felt it."
"So why am I here then?"
"You are the one chosen to resurrect us and our fellow slain dragons when you call upon us." The dragon lifted up its claw and pointed to the staff that Celesti had in her right hand, "That staff was not meant for any wizard to pull out of the ground. It was meant for the one who would use us for good and who would seek vengeance on those who wronged dragons and human kind."
Celesti looked at the staff and nodded, "But how do I call upon you guys?"
Weisslogia, the white dragon, smiled, "It depends on who you know. You see us because you've met our sons. For some dragons, you might have an interaction with their spirit. For others, you might meet their kin, or Dragon Slayer. That was the case with myself and Skiadrum."
"Who are your sons?" Celesti couldn't help but ask this question aloud.
"Sting is my son, while Rogue is Skiadrum's son. We rescued them when they were children and thought that teaching them our magic would be enough to protect them from those that did us harm. There are others like them, known as Dragon Slayers."
Skiadrum spoke up, "Unfortunately, not all of the dragons were fortunate enough to train someone. Some of them got slain by humans, some got slain by Acnologia. They still wish to seek their vengeance on those that wronged them, so the dragons that were still living decided to try and find a summoner, dubbed a Tamer, powerful enough to bring them back to life. It's been 400 years of waiting, but it paid off."
Celesti nodded at the two dragons, "I understand now and accept this mission. I promise that I will not only summon you guys when needed, but I promise to guard your sons with my life."
Weisslogia smiled at the human, "Good. I, Weisslogia, Light Dragon, Caretaker of Sting Eucliffe, declare my spirit be in the service of the summoner."
"And I, Skiadrum, Dragon of Darkness, Caretaker of Rogue Cheney, declare my spirit be in the service of the summoner." Skiadrum smiled at Celesti as his body started to fade, "I look forward to working alongside you, Celesti Gryffindor."
Weisslogia approached the girl, and Celesti could not help but reach out to touch her newfound spirit. As her hands touched the dragon's paw, Weisslogia spoke, "As do I. Take good care of my son. Don't be afraid to put him in his place."
She nodded at Weisslogia, "I promise that with all of my heart." Celesti then walked over to Skiadrum and touched his shoulder.
Skiadrum turned and looked at the girl and grinned, "Go back to your world. My son is worried sick about you. Please show him how to love again."
Celesti nodded as she saw the two dragons fade away, "I promise that with all of my heart." As the dragons faded, the tranquil meadow started to fade too. Celesti felt herself floating back into the light. She held onto the staff with both hands and laid it on her lap as she envisioned her friends. Seeing their smiling faces made her shed a tear and as that tear fell, the girl spoke softly to herself, "I promise to keep those smiles on your faces, no matter what it takes."
