12 - SHE FOLLOWED
"You're the bastard who attacked New York!" Aurora exclaimed with realization, "Gosh, that must have been like, what, a hundred years ago now?"
Thor shook his head, "Seven, but that's not important." He picked up something that looked vaguely like a bottle and threw it at his brother's head, watching as it hit his head and then clattered onto the floor.
"Ow," Loki mumbled.
"Just had to be sure," Thor nodded.
"Hello, Bruce," Loki spoke as the other man approached him.
Bruce looked offput by his presence and Aurora watched with her arms crossed and a careful expression, "So, last time I saw you, you were trying to kill everybody. Where are you at these days?"
Loki's expression was unchanging as he answered, "It varies from moment to moment."
Aurora did not like this one bit. Last she checked, Loki was incredibly dangerous. He had literally opened a portal between realms in order to attack New York City and now he was sitting here wrapped in chains as if that was protection enough for them. Something clicked in her mind as she registered where else she had seen him.
"Norway!" she exclaimed, "I remember you! You were fighting Hela with us! I knew I'd seen you before!"
"Oh yeah!" the God nodded, "I knew I recognized you, glad we figured that out."
"Is that a dragonfang?" Thor interrupted their conversation as Aurora walked over to Valkyrie. The woman was putting a weapon wrapped in cloth down on the table and she wondered if that was what Thor was talking about.
Valkyrie nodded as she walked away, "It is."
"My God," Thor muttered as he unsheathed the weapon, "This is the famed sword of the Valkyrie."
The woman ignored this as she explained, "Sakaar and Asgard are as far apart as any two known systems. Our best bet is a wormhole outside city limits. Refuel on Xandar and we can be back in Asgard in 18 months."
"Nope," the man shook his head immediately, explaining, "We're going through the big one."
"The Devil's Anus?" Brunnhilde asked and Aurora snorted at the name.
"There's no way that's really what it's called," the woman chuckled as she took in the other's deadly serious expression.
Their conversation seemed to spark Bruce's attention as he called over, "Anus? Who's anus?"
Thor sighed, "For the record, I didn't know it was called that when I picked it."
Bruce walked over to the window with what looked like a sandwich in his hand. Where he had gotten the sandwich, Aurora had no idea. She was glad food was never something she had to worry about eating, it seemed like such a hassle. Then again, most human things felt like a hassle. One human thing she didn't mind were emotions, though, they were complicated but she found she quite liked them. At least, when it came to Brunnhilde she liked them. Even though they had yet to acknowledge anything that had happened between them, she hoped the woman could feel the warmth too. She sighed, knowing this probably shouldn't be the thing she was worrying about right now. There were larger problems at hand.
"That looks like a collapsing neutron star," Bruce explained, "inside of an Einstein-Rosen bridge."
"We need another ship," Valkyrie observed as she walked up to where they were all standing by the window. "That would tear mine to pieces."
"She's right. We need one that can withstand the geodetic strain from the singularity. And has an offline power steering system that could also function without the onboard computer," the scientist was listing off what they would need as if that sort of ship would be even remotely easy to find.
"And we need one with cupholders," Brunnhilde smiled and added on, "because we're gonna die. So, drinks!"
Aurora scoffed, "You have a horrible drinking problem."
"Mind your business, blondie," Valkyrie scoffed, "Some of us can actually die."
"At this rate, I reckon I could die," the woman explained, "I'm growing weaker by the moment so we better beat this bitch soon or at the very least get off of this god-awful planet before I'm nothing more than dust."
She noticed how Valkyrie's expression shifted when she said this as if she was genuinely concerned for Aurora. Her voice became a low whisper as she spoke, "Don't worry, we'll get you out of here before it's too late."
"Do I know you?" Bruce interrupted as he looked over at the woman, "I feel like I know you."
The woman instantly cheered up as she pointed to Bruce, "I feel like I know you, too, it's weird!"
Thor went to talk to Bruce meanwhile Aurora followed Valkyrie, "Do you actually think we're going to die?"
Valkyrie shrugged, "With my luck? Probably. If the Devi's Anus doesn't kill us, Hela will so it's really a lose-lose if you ask me. You're lucky, though, I'm sure if you die you just turn to ash or something dramatic and then go back up to the sky. The rest of us actually lose something."
"Can't lose anything if you have nothing in the first place," Aurora scoffed, not expecting her voice to be as cutting as it was, "You're wasting away on this trash planet, don't act like you have anything to live for."
The woman's expression shifted. First it was sad, but then she seemed to put up a mask as she argued, "I've got plenty to live for, I'll have you know."
"Like what?"
She hesitated, a word seemingly hanging on the tip of her tongue before she seemed to pull back at the last moment, "Not to be forward, bu I quite like living with you by my side."
Aurora's breath hitched as she went to say something, unsure what words would match that statement, but they were interrupted by Thor proclaiming, "We need a ship."
Valkyrie sighed as her attention was drawn to the two men, "There are one or two that are top models --"
"I don't mean to impose," Loki finally spoke. He could barely get the words out before Brunnhilde threw the empty glass she had in her hand against the wall, letting the glass shatter around him. He barely flinched, "but the Grandmaster has a great many ships. I may even have stolen the access codes to his security system."
"And suddenly you're overcome with an urge to do the right thing," Valkyrie teased with a raised eyebrow and a look of uncertainty.
"Heavens, no," the god shook his head. "I've run out of favor with the Grandmaster and in exchange for codes and access to his ship, I'm asking for safe passage through the Anus."
Thor sounded skeptical as he spoke, "You're telling us that you can get us access to the garage without setting off any alarms?"
"Yes, brother, I can."
Bruce interrupted as he gathered the four of them together, leaving Loki out of the conversation, "Okay, can I just... an FYI, I was just talking to him a couple minutes ago and he was totally ready to kill any of us."
"He did try to kill me," Brunnhilde tacked on.
"Yes, me too, on many, many occasions," Thor muttered, "There was one time when we were children he transformed himself into a snake, and he knows that I love snakes. So, I went to pick up the snake to admire it and he transformed back into himself and he was like "bleugh, it's me!" and he stabbed me. We were eight at the time."
They all turned back to Loki who was harboring a small smile. Valkyrie spoke next, "If we're boosting a ship, we're gonna need to draw some guards away from the palace."
"Why not set the beast loose?" Loki contributed from this position, his voice daring.
"Shut up," was all Thor said.
Valkyrie looked excited at this, "You guys have a beast?"
"No, we don't have a beast, he's just being stupid," Thor shook his head immediately. "We're gonna start a revolution."
"Revolution?" Valkyrie and Aurora questioned at the same time.
The god brushed them off, "I'll explain later. We need to go."
Aurora had a bad feeling about this one, but she trusted Thor so wherever he went, she would follow. So, she followed.
