08 - STAY

The rest of the walk felt like it took forever, but eventually, they approached a large archway with two guards. Valkyrie kicked aside one of the guard's scepter's with a chuckle as they saw the Hulk waiting for her. Aurora wasn't sure how comfortable she was with this considering A) recent events with Brunnhilde and B) the fact that the previous night she had watched Thor get the shit beaten out of him by this creature.

"Angry girl!" the creature exclaimed as he lifted his weapon while Valkyrie ran toward him. He swung it at her, but she slid and ducked as they went into a play-fighting routine. It was odd to see Valkyrie with a genuine smile on her face. In fact, Aurora wasn't sure if she ever had seen her with a genuine smile on her face before. With a smile, Valkyrie kicked the creature down and the ground shook as he fell. There was one distinct thing missing: Thor.

"Aurora!" Thor exclaimed as he came out from what looked like a hiding place behind a shelf. He ran over to her, holding his arms out to which she grabbed him in a hug, "I was waiting to trap this lovely Valkyrie into speaking with me but you're here! Why are you still with this scoundrel? Did she kidnap you?"

"Quite the opposite," Valkyrie's smile faded as she walked over to the pair who separated. "I can't seem to get rid of her no matter how hard I try. Now's my chance so I won't speak with you Thor, I only came because I knew Aurora wanted to see you. You're so thick-headed that you can't tell when someone who is hiding across the universe wants to be left alone."

Valkyrie tried to leave, but Thor followed her saying, "We need to talk."

"Brunnhilde, why not hear him out?" Aurora asked mainly just because she didn't want the girl to leave. She was just as alone on this planet with no way to navigate it as Thor was and Valkyrie was her way out. She wasn't even sure how to get back to the stars at this point for she felt so lost.

"Because you want to talk to me, not have a talk. I'm not gonna listen to anything you have to say. Goodbye, Aurora," the woman mused as she headed for the exit. Aurora didn't know what to say to make her stay, so she stayed silent as she watched the girl leave.

Thor turned to Hulk saying, "I need her to stay."

The creature nodded, grabbing the headboard of his bed and throwing it in Valkyrie's path, "Stay? Block!"

It seemed to be efficient enough because the girl stopped in her tracks. Aurora sighed in relief. Thor shot Hulk a look before turning to say, "Stay. Please."

With a huff, the woman turned around, her eyes darting to meet Aurora's before moving over to the shelf saying, "All right, here's the deal. I'll listen to you --" she plucked a large bottle off the shelf, "--till this is empty."

She began to chug, so Thor explained, "Asgard is in danger and people are dying. We need to get back there, I need your help. Wow."

Within seconds the bottle was empty and she let it fall to the floor as it shattered, "Finished. Bye."

"Odin is dead," Thor spoke, his voice uncharacteristically grim. Aurora paled, knowing what that meant for Asgard. So that was why Hela had returned. That was why Thor needed her help in the first place.

"Brunnhilde, please," Aurora found her words, not bothering to mask the desperation in her voice, "He's my friend. We... I need you. Just hear him out."

Although she didn't say a word to Aurora except for a careful glance before she let her eyes rest on Thor for him to explain, "Hela, the Goddess of Death, has invaded Asgard."

Without fully turning around, Valkyrie spat, "If Hela's returned then Asgard has already lost."

"I'm going to stop her," the God spoke with such a vicinity that Aurora whole-heartedly believed him.

Still, Brunnhilde scoffed, "With who? The lightbulb? She's weak enough as is, this planet is killing her."

"I wasn't aware you were paying attention," Aurora observed with a coy smile, "Be careful, Brunnhilde, someone might start to think you're caring about me. For your information, it's not the planet, it's my human form. It isn't built to last."

If Aurora wanted to drive herself mad she would think more about the way Valkyrie's expression seemed to falter ever-so-slightly when she said that. Maybe in some weird way, Valkyrie was beginning to care about her, but Aurora would run herself rampant trying to prove it. Still, there was something so dangerously fragile about the way Valkyrie looked at her.

"With Aurora, I'm putting together a team," Thor interrupted them, but Aurora noticed the way he shot a questioning look between the two of them, clearly noticing that there was something deeper beneath the surface but he didn't ask any questions, thank God. "It's us, you, and the big guy."

"No, no team. Only Hulk," the creature butt in from behind them as he bounced a ball against the wall repeatedly. Aurora didn't get irritated easily, but the sound was going to drive her insane.

Thor sighed, "Okay, it's us, and you."

Valkyrie shook her head, "I think It's only you two."

She went to leave again, but the man chased after her, grabbing her wrist to keep her there as he said, "Wait, wait! Just listen. The Valkyrie are legend. Elite warriors of Asgard sworn to defend the throne."

"I'm not getting dragged into another one of Odin's family squabbles."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Then it hit her. Aurora realized: Thor didn't know. He knew there was only one Valkyrie left, but he didn't know why. Aurora wasn't sure she knew the whole story, either, but it was clear Hela had something to do with it.

"Your sister," Valkyrie's voice was harsh, calculated. "Her power comes from Asgard, same as yours. When it grew beyond Odin's control she massacred everyone in the palace and tried to seize the throne. When she tried to escape her banishment he sent the Valkyrie in to fight her back. I only survived because..." Her gaze drifted sadly over to Aurora before she turned back to Thor, "...Look I already faced her once when I still believed in the throne and it cost me everything. That's what's wrong with Asgard. The throne, the secrets, the whole golden sham."

She went to walk past him, but Thor grabbed her again.

"I agree," he tried to say, however, the woman slid out of his grip and instead held a knife to his throat.

"Don't get familiar," she spat before turning to the blonde. "Aurora... I hope you know if you follow him into battle you will be walking to your death."

"I can't die," Aurora sighed, "I will just return to the stars."

"Something tells me the more human you get... the less that is."

Aurora didn't want to think about something like that. Valkyrie was right, she didn't know the parameters of her powers in her weakened state. Still, she kept her expression strong.

Clearing her throat, she nodded towards Thor, "I believe my friend was trying to say something."

Thor sighed, "I agree with you. That's why I turned down the throne. But this isn't about the crown. This is about the people. They're dying and they're your people, too."

Getting impatient, Valkyre shoved him away, exclaiming, "Forget it. I have."

"Okay," Thor nodded.

"Okay. Good. Great."

"Thank you."

"For what?"

Thor held up the small metal remote in his hand, "For this. Didn't see that, did you? There, that's better. You know, go ahead and enslave people for that lunatic. Thank you for bringing my friend back to me, I'm sure she's tired of being around the likes of you. Keep drinking, keep hiding. But me--" Hulk tossed him the ball he had been using, "I choose to run towards my problems and not run away from them. Because that's what--"

Aurora watched as Thor threw the ball at the window with the intention to break it, but instead, the ball came back and hit him in the head. She tried to hold in a laugh because even though that looked like it hurt, it was pretty funny.

Thor hopped back up and tried to pretend that hadn't happened as he continued, "Becuase that's what heroes do."

With that, Thor broke through the crack in the window and was gone.

Valkyrie turned to Aurora, taking a step closer to her. "If you want to go with him, then go."

"Do you want me to go?" she asked, choosing her words very carefully as she met the girl in the middle with another step forward.

"I don't care what you do," Brunnhilde said with a shrug, but judging by the obvious avoidance of eye contact, that was a lie.

Aurora watched as Hulk hopped through the window to follow Thor. She knew she had to go. With a sigh, she brushed past Valkyrie and walked towards the shattered glass. As she stepped onto the edge of the window, she turned back at the woman.

With a small, sad smile, she said, "'Till we meet again."

"'Till we meet again."
