03 - PAYDAY

They were about halfway through the drive to the Capital (at least, by Scrapper 142's estimate) when Thor finally came to. Aurora watched as the man came to his senses and observed the situation he was in. As he turned around, his eyes immediately landed on her faintly glowing figure.

"Aurora?" he asked, sounding stunned and she felt awful knowing he likely believed she was betraying him at that moment. "What are you doing here? Fraternizing with the enemy? How come you don't get a shock thingy?"

The guilt overtook her as she did her best to explain that she was very much on his side, "I'm not with her, I swear! The only reason I'm not where you are is that those electric things don't affect me in the way they do for you, they only heighten my power not take it away! So, she couldn't exactly... tame me."

"I'm sure I could if I really tried," the woman shrugged as she took a sip of her drink and continued driving. She turned to speak into some sort of communicative device on the ship, "Scrapper 142. I need clearance and an audience with the boss. I've got something special."

With this statement, Thor turned his attention to Valkyrie, "Hey! Where are you taking me?" She ignored him, so he yelled further, "Answer me! Hey! I am Thor, son of Odin. I need to get back to Asgard."

The woman ignored him, simply grabbing the remote to the device attached to his neck and with her finger ready on the button, she spoke with her voice dripping sarcasm, "Many apologies, your majesty." With that, the button was pushed and Thor was out like a light once again.

"You're cruel," Aurora muttered, "He's not lying. His world is in danger. The woman that is the reason we landed here will destroy Asgard as we know it. I cannot stand to see that happen, have you no mercy? Or even basic morality?"

"I prefer to describe myself as morally grey," Scrapper 142 shrugged, "Asgard can burn. Don't get mouthy with me or I will find a way to capture you, too, and sell you right alongside this God of yours."

The being scoffed, crossing her arms, "I, for one, would like to see you try."

"Don't test me or you will."

"You're all talk and you know it," she laughed, taunting the other woman. She could see her getting visibly frustrated and it was awfully entertaining. "You will never defeat me. You hate it already."

Scrapper 142 huffed, but her vacant and unforgiving expression did not shift in the slightest. Taking one more sip of her drink, she guided her ship into a sort of garage with guards in colorful attire removing Thor from the ship as soon as they landed. He was put into a chair and locked in all while the god remained unconscious. Aurora longed to help him, but the woman had a tight grip on her wrist as soon as they exited the ship.

"Best behavior. If you fuck this up, I don't get paid and you would hate to see me if I don't get paid," the woman seethed under her breath as the two of them left Thor and were being guided through what Aurora assumed was the capital building.

"No chaos from me, I don't like to start fights I simply finish them," Aurora shrugged, trying to sound as casually calm as she wanted to be. "Who are we meeting anyway?"

"The Grandmaster, he rules over this place. Thor will make an excellent champion for his games," she explained in a whisper so the guards paid no mind to the pair of them discussing. Although Aurora knew she wasn't, the cold and uncaring expressions on the guards' faces made her feel as though they were the prisoners and not Thor. There was an uncomfortable chill crawling down her spine as they were led into a room with quite a few people in it. They all wore brightly colored clothing, but the expressions on their faces were quite the opposite. One of them was an older man in bright gold robes sitting on a throne. This, of course, could only be the Grandmaster, but he was nothing like what Aurora expected. He seemed frail and theatric. Aurora could probably blink and take him down. Scrapper 142 stepped to stand next to this man in his throne-like chair and due to the grip she had on her arm, Aurora had no choice but to follow.

They were quiet for a moment until Thor appeared in the chair he was strapped to. He was screaming and no one seemed to question it, but he opened his eyes and ceased once he realized where he was. Immediately, his eyes flicked over to Aurora, most people's eyes seemed to fall on her since she was quite literally glowing.

"Aurora, you have to get me out of here!" he yelled at her, but the way Scrapper 142 tightened her grip warned her that it was better for her to lay dumb.

Turning away from the God, she looked at the Grandmaster and lied through her teeth, feeling awful as she did so, "My apologies, I have never met this man in my life."

The Grandmaster nodded before observing Thor, remarking, "He's wonderful. Is it a he?"

With no change in her expression, the woman next to Aurora nodded. "It is a he."

"Yeah. I love it when you come to visit, 142," the Grandmaster mused. "You bring me the best stuff. Whenever we get to talking, Topaz, about Scrapper 142, what do I always say? 'She is the...' And it starts with a 'B.'"

"Trash," the woman next to the Grandmaster who Aurora assumed was Topaz, spoke with no hesitation whatsoever.

The Grandmaster scoffed, "No, not trash. Were you waiting just to call her that? It doesn't with a 'B.'"

"Booze hag," Topaz tried again. Aurora tried her best to hide her laugh.

"I'm so sorry. No, "best." I was thinking about "best." 'Cause I always say you're the best. She brought me my beloved champion, you know."

"You say that every time she's here," Topaz remained unamused. "What have you brought today? Tell me."

With her expression unfaltering, Scrapper 142 offered, "A contender."

"A what?" Thor questioned.

"A what?" Aurora repeated under her breath to Scrapper 142 while the Grandmaster muttered something about wanting to get closer to Thor. The woman refused to respond as they got closer to Thor as the man observed him.

Looking at Topaz, the Grandmaster pointed to 142 and insisted, "Pay this lady."

"Just wait a damn minute! I'm not for sale," Thor exclaimed. He broke free from his restraints, but the woman simply raised the remote and pressed the button and he was out cold again. Aurora's heart panged, but she knew she couldn't say anything. After this, the Grandmaster had moved on, his eyes landing on Aurora. Her heart stopped.

"Now, how much for her?" he questioned and the woman's grip was practically searing through Aurora's skin with how tight she was holding on. "I bet she would look great going up against my champion. Or maybe even up here with me."

With a firm ferocity in her voice, the woman declined forcefully, "She's not for sale. I brought you a worthy contender. One. Not two. I take ten million for him. That's it."

"Tell her she's dreaming," Topaz bit, but the Grandmaster scoffed.

"I'll give you twenty million for both," he offered and for a moment 142's grip lessened and Aurora was sure she was done for. She couldn't quite blame the woman as that seemed like a great deal of money on this planet. Besides, she could easily get out of captivity.

However, the woman surprised her by rejecting the offer. "Ten million for him and that's final."

"You're tough, I like that about you, 142," the Grandmaster obliged, "Transfer the units, but you owe me, 142. I would have liked to see her in the ring."

Without another word, the woman simply brushed her and against the Grandmaster's face and the two of them stepped off the platform and headed for the exit, thankfully not flanked by guards.

"You'll pay for this," Thor struggled to say as the two of them walked by.

Aurora mouthed an apology, but the scrapper had no such remorse, "No, I got paid for this."

As the two of them exited the room, 142 let go of Aurora's arm, but she stopped them from continuing in order to ask, "Why the hell did you save me? I thought all you would care about is the money."

"I'm not as shallow as you think," the woman shrugged, "besides, the Grandmaster would either eat you alive with the Contest of Champions or whore you out with the royals and all their friends and I wouldn't like to see that happen."

"So, is this where we go our separate ways then? Now that you have so graciously not sold me into the slave trade?"

"I suppose it is," the woman smiled, but there was bitterness behind it as there was behind everything she said or did. Aurora gave her a similar grin and began to walk away, but the woman stopped her, "Wait!" She turned around, curious as to what this woman had to say, "I just got ten million units for selling your friend. Least I could do is buy you a drink with it."

Aurora was perplexed by the lack of animosity in her offer but pleased nonetheless. "Okay, let's get a drink."
