Chapter 11: WATER

Night was approaching as the sky melted before their eyes into beautiful watercolors. Lilin had suggested that they walk to a nearby park and talk about some important things there.

Their walking setup was as follows: Sylis was to the left, closest to the street, Lilin was to his right, and Piper was in between the two holding both of their hands, lightly swinging them as they all walked. Soon the apartments, restaurants, and stores disappeared into city trees and the sky. The concrete sidewalk turned into manually laid bricks with writing delicately carved into each one of them, but no one cared enough to read any of the rectangle blocks.

"There it is." Lilin pointed to her right and Sylis stopped, making them no longer perpendicular to the street but diagonal.

The park had a few children playing in the water fountains. They laughed as they ran through the lines of water like it was a water sprinkler. Their parents and other adults chatted amongst each other while sitting on the park's benches, sometimes yelling at their children to stop running or stop terrorizing the other children present.

"Do you want to join them?" Sylis asked, getting down on a knee.

Piper shook her head. "No."

Sylis looked up at Lilin then back at his pretend daughter. He knew that she had social anxiety, but he wanted the girl to be able to have something that he never had; friends. "I know that you don't want to go there alone." Piper shook her head again and took a step behind. Sylis put his hand on the small of her back so she didn't step into the street. "But," he said. "What if I went with you?"

Piper's auburn eyes lit up like a firework exploding in an almost night sky. "Really?" Her voice was filled with excitement. Sylis nodded his head and Lilin smiled, mouthing thank you.

Sylis pushed up on his knees to stand they he took Piper's hand. They first took off their shoes and gave them to Lilin, though they had no change of clothes with them so when they reached the water line, they looked at each other. "You ready?" Sylis had a smile on his face. Piper nodded her head and with a full three-piece teal suit and a black dress with a white bow the two pranced through the water.

They got a lot of looks from the children and the adults in attendance to watch the spectacle, but at that moment Sylis and Piper didn't care. For Sylis, it was like living his childhood again, but correctly this time. For Piper, it was breaking out of her shyness; she didn't care who was looking or talking about her, she was just having fun. The two hopped around the water, jumping in circles. They pretended that the lines of water were an aisle and faked a wedding. They danced and laughed. The children watched them and joined in with their fun. Soon the adults didn't mind that a tall man was playing with their children, they even clapped for the pair a few times.

The sun soon had fallen that the street lights had turned on and lie all good things, it had to come to a close. Children slowly moved away from the water and returned to their guardians, but not after complimenting the pair and saying that they had lots of fun. The fun had officially ended when the light retreated into the ground. Piper got on her news and placed her hand on the hole which water had fallen back into. "It's gone."

Sylis walked over to her and gently picked her up. "I know." Their drooping mouths were evident as cool water dripped from their clothing. Their hairs stuck to their skin and the cool night breeze only made it worse. Sylis looked around. The delight and fun seemed to just be a distant memory now.

"Cheer up," Lilin encouraged, still holding their shoes. "It's not that cold. Let's go home."

Piper crossed her arms and tried not to reveal anything on her face. "Let's get Mama wet." The message was sent via telepathy, but Sylis was thinking the same thing. He didn't see Lilin as a client anymore. He saw her as a friend, just like her daughter. His occupation didn't allow relationships, but maybe he could make an exception.

"Before we go, we need to get something." Sylis walked over and Piper and Lilin followed suit. His plan was simple but effective. They walked close to the water fountain which stopped spitting water but still contained water in its base. When Sylis was close enough to hit it with his foot he swiftly scooped up a handful of water and threw it at Lilin.

She jumped back and the water fun had only resumed from its brief pause. Piper dunked her hands into the fountain and threw them at her mother, almost missing. When that didn't work she used her dripping hand and quickly opened and closed them spraying little droplets unto her mother's red dress.

"Ah, I'm under attack!" Lilin playful covered her face, popping one of her legs up. That's when Sylis grabbed one of her hands and threw a handful of water right into her face as if it was a snowball. Lilin's face was agape like a fish's. "Oh, it's on." Lilin went to the fountain and got a fistful of water. She chased the two around as they laughed.

"This surely is the good life," Sylis thought to himself. "If I didn't choose my current life, I would have chosen this one surely."

Sylis sat down on the water fountain watching Lilin chase her daughter, but slower so she wouldn't catch up to her. Then the woman sat down next to him. Their hand touched. She smiled and laughed out loud. He had never heard such a beautiful laugh.

That's when he got a faceful of water. "I told you I would get my revenge." Sylis just enjoyed the chorus of laughter, finally letting himself go and just having fun. It was a good day that day and the stars were all out that night shining as hard as they could.

Sylis looked at his ring. It was fake and yet real. It was just like him.
