32. The Massacre at Hawkins Lab
I still kept going down. When I saw the gate I went through straight away. I was followed by Nancy, Robin and Eddie I didn't know they even got off the boat. Once I saw Steve he was being attacked I then managed to find an oar and I got one of the bats off. "Steve, we've got you." I said to him and hopefully he'd be ok. I hit the next one off and then it was the one that was strangling him.
"Quick! Hold it, Robin!" Nancy shouted at him. I couldn't imagine how alone Steve felt.
"I got it." Robin said and Nancy and I started hitting it to kill it. "Get it!" She shouted at us.
"Kill it! Kill it!" Eddie shouted and that's when I saw more coming.
"Just die already!" I shouted at this bat but it didn't go. Robin then started.
"Come on! Please!" She shouted at it. But nothing.
"Nancy, behind you! Watch out!" Eddie shouted before something sprang on her and pushed her to the ground.
"Oh my god, Nance!" Robin shouted and I looked at her.
"Robin, help Nance!" I shouted at her and I kept attacking this bat that was keeping Steve down.
"Robin, get it off me!" Nancy shouted and I kept hitting at this bat.
"Got it, got it, got! God damn it! Shit!" Eddie said and I held the bat still as Steve but it.
"Come here!" Steve said to it.
"No!" Eddie shouted and I then went to help Nancy before I got attacked.
"Eddie! Steve! Help!" I shouted as it latched onto my arm. I let out a gasp as it sank its teeth, fangs whatever in.
"Y/n, I got it!" Eddie shouted as he started getting it off. "Get off her!" He shouted. And started to pulled it off.
"Y/n, I'm coming!" Steve shouted as he swing his bat around.
"Come on, come on, come on, you son of a bitch! I said come on! Let's go!" Eddie shouted and as he continued trying to get it off Steve then helped.
"Y/n, we're going to get this thing off. Just keep calm okay." Steve said as she started trying to pull it off causing more pain. Once it was off I saw the blood on my arm. Steve then beat the bat up. Ripping it apart.
"Steve!" I said as I went over to him. Scanning him over. He was bleeding from both sides where he'd been attacked. I hugged him.
"Jesus Christ. Jesus H. Christ!" Eddie said as he dropped his oar.
"Are you ok? I mean your not. But how are feeling?" I asked Steve as he hugged me back. I was just glad that he was ok.
"I'm ok. I'm ok. I'm more worried about you." He said to me as we pulled apart. I then looked at my arm to see the blood.
"Are you okay?" Nancy asked him and we looked at his wounds then.
"Well, they took about a pound of flesh. But other than that, yeah, never better." Steve said as I rested my head on his shoulder. He tilted his head so it would be touching mine. A sense of comfort coming off as I side hugged him.
"Uh, do you guys think these bats, have, like, rabies?" Robin asked and I looked at her. They better not.
"What?" Steve and I asked her.
"It's just that rabies are, like, my number one greatest fear. And I think we should get you both to a doctor like really soon because once symptoms set in, it's too late. And you're already like dead." Robin said and I looked at her.
"When we get back, my mom can examine us. She's a doctor." I said to her with a smile. We then heard chittering coming closer. There was more. But they weren't here for us.
"All right. There's not that many." Steve said they were at the gate. Protecting it. "We can take 'em. Right?" Steve asked and that's when we heard it. The swarm.
"You were saying?" Robin asked.
"We can't take them." I said and I saw Nancy looking around.
"The woods. Come on." Nancy said and we started running. We had to get out of here. Away from this swarm. We all kept running until we got to Skull rock. We hid there. Waiting for this Swarm to pass.
"Oh...okay. That was close." Robin said as we got out from our hiding spot.
"Yeah. Too close." Eddie said and I saw Steve lean onto the side of.
"Oh, sh...shit." He said and I went over to him.
"Steve?" I said as I went back to him. "Your not okay." I said to him. He was injured worse than what I was.
"I'm fine. I'm fine." He said and I shook my head at him.
"No, no, no. Steve, you are not fine. You're losing a lot of blood. I need you to sit down. Okay?" I said to him as I helped him to sit down. I got that my arm was bleeding badly as well but he was worse. "Okay." I said to him and he moved his hand away. It looked bad.
"Oh." Robin said and that's when I took my sweater off. I had a shirt underneath so I'd be ok. He needed it more than me. If only my two layers stopped that bite or maybe I shouldn't have rolled the sleeves up. "Okay. So the good news is I'm pretty sure wooziness is not a symptom of rabies. But if you shaft having hallucinations or muscle spasms or you start feeling aggressive, like you wanna punch me, let me know." Robin said to him and hopefully he wouldn't feel that way.
"Robin." Steve said to her.
"Yeah?" She asked him.
"I kinda wanna punch you." He said making Robin laugh.
"Sense of humor's still intact. That's a good sign." Robin said to him.
"Yeah." Steve said to her.
"Okay." Robin said as she walked away and I looked at him.
"Okay. This might be painful. Are you ready?" I asked him and he looked at me.
"Yeah. Just do it." He said as I wrapped my jumper around him. I'd changed the shape of it to make sure it would hold pressure the wounds.
"I'm sorry." I said as I tightened it and he grunted.
"Is that too tight?" I asked him while looking up at him.
"No, that's good." He said to me and I stood up.
"All right." I said and I tied it off for him. "Okay. Nearly done." I said to him.
"Thanks." He said to me and I looked at him.
"It's okay." I said to him and he looked at me.
"Now, I'm going to do the same for you." He said to me. I ripped the sleeve off my shirt and I gave it to him. "You ready?" He asked me and I looked at him and nodded.
"Yeah." I said as he wrapped it around a few times and I started grunting in pain.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Nearly done." He said to me as he tightened it around my arm. "Do you want it looser?" He asked me and I shook my head.
"Keep it that way." I said to him and he tied it off. Kissing me afterwards.
"I never want to do that again." He said to me and I looked at him.
"I don't either. So I guess we both gotta stay out of danger." I said to him. I put his around and my shoulder and put an arm around him to help him walk.
"So, uh, this place is like Hawkins, but with monsters and nasty shit?" I heard Eddie ask and that was pretty much it.
"Pretty much." Nancy said and we saw him about to get off the log he was on. "Wait, watch out for the vines. It's all a hive mind." Nancy said to him. That was the worst part.
"It's all a what?" He asked and Steve put his hand on the rock beside him.
"All the creepy crawlies around here dude. They're, like, one or something. You step on a vine, you're stepping on a bat, you're stepping on Vecna." Steve said and I took my arm off him.
"Shit." Eddie said as he started to come down.
"But everything from our world is still here, right? Except people obviously?" Robin said and I wanted to know what she was getting at here.
"As far as I understand it, yeah." Nancy said to her and I looked at Robin.
"So, theoretically, we could go to the police station and steal guns and grenades and whatever we need to blow up those bat things that are guarding the gate." Robin said and that was a stretch. They wouldn't have things like that. I would know.
"I highly doubt the Hawkins PD has grenades, Robin. Buy guns, yeah, sure." Steve said to to her.
"They have guns but they don't carry grenades." I said to her.
"Well, we don't have to go all the way downtown for guns. I have guns in my bedroom and Y/n does too." Nancy said and I did. Because of the first year when this all happened.
"You two, Nancy Wheeler and Y/n Solace, have guns, plural, in your bedrooms?" Eddie asked like he didn't believe us. But they were there. Under my bed and in my closet.
"Full of surprises, aren't they?" Robin asked him and that was true.
"A Russian Makarov and a revolver." Nancy said to him and I looked at Eddie.
"A shotgun and a Makarov as well." I said to him and he looked a bit taken a back.
"Yeah, you almost shot me with that one." Steve said and I looked at him.
"And you almost deserved it and I'll always regret pointing it at you." I said to him and Eddie tossed his jacket at him.
"For your modesty, dude." Eddie shouted before there was a rumbling. Steve caught me and he grabbed onto the rock. We then heard the creatures baying in the distance. Before the snarling came.
"So guns seem like a pretty good idea to me." Eddie said to us and they did. Definitely did.
"Yeah, me too." Robin said and Steve and I stood up. He put the jacket on.
"So what are we waiting for?" Eddie asked and we started walking. Hopefully we could get to our houses in this messed up world before the bats got to us.
"Couldn't we have tried a road, or something just slightly less creepy?" Robin asked Nancy and I.
"We could have but we've got more coverage here." I said to her with a smile. That was better than being out in the open.
"I think we're getting close. We're almost out of here. Don't worry." Nancy said to her. The boys were behind us. We ignored all the growling and all of that and just kept walking. It wasn't long until there was another rumbling.
"I didn't think they'd be earthquakes here." I said to both Robin and Nancy. This was really turning into hell.
"Second on my list of least favorite things, earthquakes. Seriously, I'm unsteady enough as it is." Robin said as we all grabbed onto something. That's when Nancy took off.
"Seriously." I said to her.
"Nancy!" Robin and I shouted at her.
"Where are you going? Nancy!" Robin shouted we then went after her.
"Nancy!" We shouted again. We then saw her looking into the distance.
"Come on." She said as we started towards the house. Our houses. We needed to split up.
"I'll go with Y/n. The rest of you stay with Nancy." Steve said as we went over to my house. Getting the door open.
"This doesn't even look like my house anymore." I said to him and we went upstairs.
"This is like a whole new place." He said to me and I looked around my room.
"Wait, this isn't my room. This is sophomore year. These are the flash cards. Nothing exists here yet." I said to him and he looked t me.
"Are you sure?" He asked me and then we looked in my closet.
"I'm very sure." I said to him and he looked at me.
"Shit." He said and we went next door to Nancy. That's when we heard them. Hunter and Dustin.
"Hunter!" I shouted. He was here. Or his voice.
"Dustin! Dustin!" Steve shouted as we started walking around. Hopefully they could hear us as well.
"Hunter! Hunter!" I shouted and we heard the others run downstairs.
"Dustin! Can you hear us? Dustin! Du- -Hello? Hel...Hello?" Steve shouted and I looked around.
"Hunter! Answer me if you can hear us!" I shouted and I knew he could hear us. Joyce could hear Will when he was in the Upside Down.
"Hello! Hello?" Steve shouted at them.
"Steve, Y/n. What are you doing?" Nancy asked and he shone his flashlight at him.
"Hello!" Steve shouted at Dustin again. "They're here. Henderson and little Solace. Those little shits, their here. Their like...their in the walls or something. Just listen. Dustin. Hunter. Dustin! Hunter! Dustin! Dustin! Hunter! Dustin! Can you hear us?" Steve shouted and I looked around.
"Hunter! Dustin!" I shouted. That's when we heard them again.
"That brings us to the question you first raised. How and why is there a gate at Lover's Lake?" Dustin asked who he was with they were here. They were at the Wheeler's.
"Dustin!" Nancy shouted and we all looked around.
"Hunter!" I shouted he had to respond to me.
"Dustin?" Eddie shouted out. "Hunter?" He then added n
"Dustin!" Robin shouted and I looked at Steve.
"All right, either this kid can't hear us or he's being a total douchebag." Steve said and I think it was the last part.
"Will found a way." Nancy said and I looked at her.
"The lights." I said to her that's how we'd get through.
"What?" Steve asked the both of us.
"Will. He found a way to speak to Joyce through the lights." Nancy said, we just needed to do the same.
"Lights?" Steve asked us and I nodded at him.
"Yeah." Nancy and I said to him. Nancy then tried a lamp but it didn't switch on.
"The switch. Try the switch." Steve said to her and hopefully it would turn on now.
"Okay." Nancy said but not even the main light turned on. "It's not working." Nancy said to us. We couldn't communicate.
"Guys? You seeing this?" Steve asked and there was a dust like aura around the light. We all walked closer. Nancy and I put our hand in it. It felt ticklish.
"Whoa." Eddie said as he came over. This would be it. We took our hands away and the lights faded. We put them back in the lights went on again.
"It...tickles." Steve said to us all. It was strange.
"It kinda feels good." Robin said and I saw Nancy take her hand away.
"Does anybody know Morse code?" She asked and I shook my head.
"No." Steve, Robin and I said.
"Wait, does SOS count?" Eddie asked and we all looked at him. "Is that...is that good?" He asked and I looked at him.
"That's exactly what we need." I said to him and hopefully they'd see our message. We then started to do an SOS signal. Well Eddie did.
"It's working." Robin said.
"Now they have to figure it out." I said to them and hopefully they'd help us out. We then followed them upstairs.
"Come on. Come on." Steve said and I was hoping they'd do something.
"Okay, you guys seeing this?" Dustin asked us as we saw another thing of that dust. Nancy waved her hand through it. We then heard Dustin laugh. "We're bit moving it, but we're gonna unplug it. Stand by. Yank it." Dustin said and it went out. And soon it was back on again.
"Okay. Um...uh..." Nancy said and that's when she started to spell things out.
"That worked." Dustin said and we could get help.
"Yes! Yes! Hi!" Eddie shouted what was next. Nancy then started spelling stuck.
"Stuck." The four the said.
"Indefinitely." I said to them all.
"They're stuck in the Upside Down." Lucas said to us and we were.
"Uh, you can't get back through Watergate?" Dustin asked, definitely not.
"What the hells Watergate?" Steve Asked and that was the thing we'd come from.
"'Cause it's in water and it's a gate." Robin said to them all.
"I didn't think it would be that hard to understand." I said to her but clearly it was.
"That's cute." Eddie said to us.
"Right." Steve got out.
"Um, no. It's..." Nancy started before she started spelling again. Guarded.
"Watergate's guarded." Dustin said and we had no way home.
"Perfect. Yes. Yes. Yes." Steve said and hopefully they knew where we could go.
"We think we have a theory that can help with that." Dustin shouted and I'd never been more relieved.
"Yes." Nancy got out.
"Genius child." Robin said and he was that indeed.
"We think Watergate isn't the only gate. That there's a gate at every Murder site." Dustin said so we needed to get to Eddie's trailer.
"Does anybody understand what he's talking about?" Nancy asked us and I kinda did.
"No." Steve said to us.
"No idea." Eddie said. That's when Nancy put a question mark.
"Okay. Seriously? How many times do I have to be right on the money before you trust me?" Dustin shouted at us. He had an attitude problem.
"Jesus Christ. This kid's gotta get his ego in check." Steve said while shaking his head and now wasn't the time for Dustin's talk.
"It's his tone. Right?" Eddie asked him.
"I know." Steve said agreeing with him.
"Okay. So...so how far is your trailer?" Nancy asked Eddie and it was a bit of a walk.
"Seven miles." Eddie said and I wouldn't walk that.
"Nancy? Uh, I know your house is, like, weirdly, creepily frozen in time and shit, but haven't you always had bikes?" Robin asked and she did. We could cycle there. That's what we did. It was weird. Cycling through a world that wasn't ours but was at the same time. As we passed the Creel house I looked at it. I bet Vecna was there causing all of this. Once we made it to the trailer park I was glad.
"Right here." Eddie said and we dropped the bikes down.
"That's gotta be a Guinness World Record. Most miles traveled interdimensionally." Robin said to us and I looked at her.
"It has to be a record." I said to her, if only someone was watching us.
"Just inhaled a bunch of that crap." Steve said before coughing. "It's stick in my throat." Steve said and we went into the trailer. That's when we saw it. "Goddamn." Steve said.
"That's one word for it." I said to him as I looked up.
"This is where Chrissy died. Like, right where she died." Eddie said to us and it must be bringing back those memories.
"I think there's something in there." Robin said and we saw a shadow go across it. It was coming in.
"What the hell is that?" Eddie asked that was before the gate burst. Causing us to yelp. That's when we saw the stick. Steve then approached it. Us following behind.
"No way." He said as he looked up. There they were. Erica, Dustin, Max, Hunter and Lucas. Upside down.
"Hi there." Dustin said to us.
"Hi." We all said back causing Dustin to laugh.
"Holy shit, this is trippy." Robin said to us and I looked at her.
"You can say that again." I told her and now we just had to get out of here. However we could. I saw them bring in Eddie's mattress.
"Those stains are, uh...I dunno what those stains are." Eddie said and Robin hummed in response.
"Not quite sure how these physics work. But, uh...here goes nothing." Dustin shifted as he threw us the sheet chain. It was hard to say whether he threw it up to us or down to us. Once it landed we all looked at it. It worked. Stayed in place even when they let go. "All right, pull on it! See if it holds!" He shouted and Robin pulled it with her weight. It held.
"Guess I'm the guinea pig." Robin said as she climbed up it. I wondered how it worked the other side. She collapsed. We then looked at each other.
"All right. I guess I'll go." Eddie said and that's when he left. Nancy then went. Leaving Steve and I. He then looked at me.
"See you on the other side." He said to me and I looked at him.
"On the right side." I said to him as I grabbed the rope climbing up it. It caused pain to my arm but I kept going. But when I landed it wasn't in Eddie's trailer it was Steve's pool. Not the usual one it was here. But I couldn't be in two places. I looked around and that's when I saw her. Barb.
"Do you remember what you did, Y/n? Or have you already forgotten? When I kill someone...I never forget." I heard a voice say. The pool then started to fill with a red liquid. Blood. I was trapped here. I couldn't even reach the ladders. Once the pool had filled enough I climbed out of it. That's when I looked around. I could hear a clock. I wasn't even on a pool edge either. But a staircase. "I see you've been looking for me, Y/n. You were so close. So close to the truth. How was old, blind, dumb Victor? Did he miss me? I've been meaning to check back in, but I've been busy. So very busy." He said and that's when I saw Chrissy. The state he put her in. As I looked at the door that's when it went back. Back to when the Creels moved in.
"What'd I tell ya?" Victor said to his family as walked in.
"Wow." Virginia got out.
"This is amazing. It looks like a fairy tale. A dream." Alice said before she ran up the stairs. This wouldn't be what they thought.
"Alice, no running." Virginia said and Alice ran up the stairs.
"It's so big!" She said to her mom.
"This is nice." Victor said to his wife.
"Yeah." She said to him. But their son, he didn't look happy. I followed him. I saw a light flicker. This was how everything started. I saw him take a grate off the floor. Taking a spider out. Something then ran behind me. I tuned to see. He went to the attic. Where he had the spiders in jars. Drawing them. I then followed him downstairs to the clock. A grandfather clock. Vecna's clock. I then saw as the hands went at a rapid pace. I then heard a shriek. When I turned around we were outside. The boy was killing this rabbit that was trying to run. He was Vecna. This was Vecna's childhood. He was a normal person like everyone. I went inside closing the door behind. I saw the cradle in the fireplace. The very thing that Victor was telling us about. I then heard the music playing. As I went to the dining room. I knew this was from that night. I then saw Virginia get turned into a ragged doll. Soon was Alice but then he collapsed. Victor was ok but his son. He wasn't dead like he thought. I then witnessed Victor getting arrested for the crime he never would've committed. The next place I saw was Hawkins lab. Dr. Brenner was inking something onto his wrist. 001. The first subject in Hawkins Lab. The one started off everything. How I was hoping I could go back soon.
