30. The Nina Project
When we met back up with the others. We found out that Max was about to be killed by this thing. But we saved her with our findings. She was already up in the air. I couldn't even imagine how scary that must've been. We went back to Nancy's place and fell asleep in the basement. It was the easiest option. Steve and I were sharing a chair together. Sleeping soundly. It wasn't long until Nancy woke us. She and Max were telling us about the drawings that Max had done. "That's the Creel house. Vecna's staying where it all started from." I said to them all and Nancy looked at me.
"Exactly, which is why we need to check it out." She said to me we all started on the way to the house. It was abandoned. I took Steve's hand as we all looked at it. This place gave me the creeps.
"Yeah, that's not creepy." Steve said to us. Once we made it to the door, Steve had to go back to the car. There were nails in the doors so we needed the hammer. Once he came back he started taking the nails out the door. "What exactly are we supposed to be looking for in this shithole?" Steve asked Nancy. She was using the other hammer to get the other set out.
"We're not sure. We just know this house is important to Vecna." Nancy said and who knew why they were so keen on this place.
"Because Max saw it in Vecna's red soup mind world?" Steve asked her.
"Basically." Nancy told him we didn't really need another reason.
"Great." Steve said to us all.
"Maybe it holds a clue to where Vecna is. Why he's back he killed the Creels. And how to stop him before he comes back for Max." Dustin said to us and let's just hope he's not home.
"We don't think he's in here, do we?" Lucas asked us and I looked at him. Then Max. Maybe it wasn't safe for them.
"Guess we'll find out." Max said to us and I was hoping he wasn't home.
"Ready?" Steve asked, Nancy hummed in response. And they took the plank down. I then saw the rose on the door.
"Glad we've got the right house." I said as Steve tried the door handle.
"It's locked. Should I knock, see if anybody's home?" Steve asked and I've never looked at him more confused.
"Why would anyone be home?" I asked him and he shrugged.
"No need." Robin said and I turned to look at her. She had a brick in her hand. That would work. "I found a key." She said before it went through the window. Smashing the glass. Steve then reached inside to unlock the door. Once it was opened we all started inside.
"Looks like someone forgot to pay their electric bill." Lucas said to us all.
"Has to be decades worth of bills now." Hunter said as I turned my flashlight on.
"Where'd everyone get those?" Steve asked Dustin. This made Dustin turn around to face.
"Do you need to be told everything? You're not a child." Dustin said to him making me smile. Steve looked confused.
"Thank you." He said and I don't think he knew how to take this.
"Huh. Back pocket." Dustin said as he passed Steve a torch. He then dumped his bag on the floor. We then started looking in pairs. I was with Hunter. The Solace siblings. Inseparable siblings.
"They just left everything." Nancy said to mainly Robin as they looked into a room.
"I guess a triple homicidal isn't good for resale value." Robin said back to hem that would be true.
"Hey, guys?" Max said and we all looked over at her. "You all see that, right?" Max asked it was grandfather clock.
"Yeah." Dustin, Steve and I said at the same time.
"Is this why you saw? In your Visions?" Nancy asked her and she nodded.
"I mean, it's...just a clock. Right?" Robin asked as approached it. Cleaning the glass case. "Like a normal old clock." She added as she looked back at us.
"Why is this wizard obsessed with clocks? Maybe he's, like, a clockmaker or something?" Steve asked and I looked away. He couldn't be serious.
"I think you cracked the case, Steve." Dustin said to him sarcastically.
"All I know is the answers are here. Somewhere. Okay, everyone stay in groups of two. Robin, upstairs." Nancy said and I looked at Hunter.
"Let's look around. Maybe there's a basement." I said to him and we walked away. He then looked at me.
"Of course you care about a basement." He said to me and I looked at him.
"Says the person that's slept in a basement the past two days." I said to him and we went into one of the rooms.
"Look, the tables still laid." He said to me and I looked at it.
"It's frozen in time. Like a picture." I said to him as we looked around the room. I then saw him go over to a door.
"What do you think through here?" He asked me and I looked at it.
"I don't know but we are not opening it up." I said to him and he started to laugh.
"Wow, your willing to go into a basement but not through a door." He said and I laughed with him. We then started looking before I saw Max. The light beside her was on. But no electricity. How was this possible.
"I promise I'm gonna stop asking this, but...you're seeing that, right?" She asked Lucas. Hunter and I got closer.
"Yeah." He said and they saw Hunter and I.
"That shouldn't even possible." Hunter said and I looked at him.
"Exactly. This shouldn't be possible." I said and that's when Max went to touch it. It turned off. It was creepy.
"Look." Lucas said and another one turned on. Every time we'd get closer more would turn on.
"This is just getting weird." I said to them, the soft sounds of Kate Bush were playing. Max's favorite song. I'd remember this. Just in case I was ever needed to remember this. We got the others down to look at the chandelier. This was like the Byers house all those years ago.
"It's like the Christmas lights." Nancy said to us and I looked at her.
"That's what I was thinking." I said to her. It had to be.
"The Christmas lights." Robin asked us.
"Yeah, when Will was in the Upside Down, the lights...came to life." Nancy said and that meant that someone was here.
"Vecna's here. In this house. Just on the other side." Lucas said and the lights went out.
"I think he just left the room." Robin said and I started looking around.
"Did he hear us?" Max asked and I hope he didn't.
"Can be see us?" Steve asked and if he did he knew where Max was.
"Headphones." Lucas said to Max and she put them on.
"Wait, wait. Everyone, turn off your flashlights and spread out." Nancy said and I turned mine our straight away.
"We're not gonna be able to see if we turn off our flash...lights. Jesus Christ." Steve said as everyone left but I stayed.
"Hey, it'll be okay. Turn the light off." I said. I kissed him before I went away. Hopefully I'd see these lights on again.
"I got him! Got him!" Robin shouted and I ran in the direction of her. "I got him. I...I had him." She said as we got there. Her light went out and Steve's went on.
"Oh, whoa." He said and he started walking with it. "Oh, I think he's moving. He's moving. He's moving." Steve said and he followed it. Followed Vecna. Upstairs and it was gone. "Shit. I lost him." Steve said and Max walked in front.
"No, you didn't." She said as she opened a door. It went to an attic space. We all started on our way up.
"It's an attic. Of course it's an attic." Robin said to us.
"It's not as bad as a basement." Hunter said to her.
"Hold up, guys. What if he's leading us into a trap? Guys, guys. Shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit." Dustin said as he followed us dim the back. Once we made it to the top. To the center the bulb was on. All our lights then turned on. "Flashlights." Dustin said as they were all on.
"Okay, what's happening?" Steve asked and it was like we were creating a beacon. He was here. He was in this spot. It wasn't long until all our torches shattered. The glass was blown along with the bulb. He was doing something. He had to be. Maybe he'd claimed his next victim but it wasn't Max. She was here. It was someone else.
