28. The Monster and the Superhero

We didn't leave Eddie until we knew he was safe. Only appearing to visit him in the morning. We had to bring him food and more resources. "Delivery service." Dustin said Eddie. He was on edge. The worst is seen. As Eddie was eating we prepared to tell him the news. "So we got, uh, some good news and some bad news. How do you prefer it?" Dustin asked him and I always went for the bad first.

"Bad news first, always." Eddie answered before he took a swig of his drink.

"All right. Bad news. We tapped into the Hawkins PD dispatch with our Cerebro, and they're definitely looking for you. Also, they're, uh, pretty convinced you killed Chrissy." Dustin said and this is why no one could know where Eddie was.

"Like, 100% kind of convinced." Max said to him.

"Which isn't ideal at all." Hunter said to him. No shit.

"And the good news?" Eddie asked us.

"Your name hasn't gone public yet. But if we found out about you, it's a matter of time before others do to. And once that gets out, everyone and their shallow-minded mother is gonna be gunning for you." Robin said to him and I looked at him.

"Which is why we'll keep you in hiding until this breezes over." I said to him, if that meant relocating him to somewhere else. I can help him.

"Hunt the freak, right?" Eddie asked the both of us.

"Exactly." Robin said to him. He didn't need this.

"Shit." He said back, I could only imagine what he was thinking.

"So, before that happens, we find Vecna, kill him, and prove your innocence." Dustin said and that was easier said that done. Nothing is ever that simple.

"That's all, Dustin? That's all?" Eddie asked him, he wasn't too thrilled about that either.

"Yeah, no, that's pretty much it." Dustin said and this wasn't going to work at all.

"Listen, Eddie, I know everything Dustin is saying sounds totally delusional, but we've actually been through this before. I mean, they have a...a few times, and...and I have once. Mine was more human-flesh-based, theirs was more smoke-related, but bottom line is, collectively, I really feel we got this." Robin said to him and I knew he'd believe us.

"We usually rely on this girl who has super powers. But, uh, those went bye-bye, so..." Steve trailed off and I looked at him.

"She's also living in California now." I said to him. Even if her powers had returned she was still not here.

"So we're technically in more of the- -" Robin started and Steve cut her off.

"Kinda..." Steve said.

"Most certainly..." Hunter said and I looked at Max.

"Brainstorming phase." Max said and Steve and Hunter looked at each other.

"Brainstorming." Hunter and Steve said to each other at the same time.

"There...There's nothing to worry about." Dustin said and Steve scoffed at this. We then heard sirens approach.

"I think there is." I said to them all in a whisper. The police found out what we knew.

"Shit." Steve whispered.

"Tarp. Tarp. Tarp." Robin said as Eddie got underneath it. The sirens then goes closer. But they went passed the house. It was police and an ambulance. Something else must've happened. The six of us then left to see what was happening. We saw Nancy giving a statement to the police. She put her hand up to us, gesturing a hello. We did the same. She was upset. Something must've happened. We all managed to get to where Eddie's trailer was to talk. We talked about what was going on with Eddie with Chrissy and she said about Fred.

"You're saying that this thing that killed Fred and Chrissy, it's from the Upside Down?" Nancy asked and I nodded. Entirely.

"If the shoe fits." Steve said to her.

"Our working theory is that he attacks with a spell or a curse. Now, whether or not he's doing the bidding of the Mind Flayer or just loves killing teens, we don't know." Dustin said and who knew who could be next.

"All we know is this is something different. Something new." Max said to her and this would be a challenge.

"We've never seen this kind of thing before." I said to her, we'd have to learn how to cope with this. Find its weakness.

"Doesn't make sense." Nancy said to us and I could see that. But it did.

"It's only a theory." Dustin said and it would be true probably. All of Dustin's theories were right.

"No, Fred and Chrissy don't make sense. I mean, why them?" Nancy asked and there had to be a link.

"Maybe thy were just in the wrong place. Were both at the game." Dustin said but then any of us could be a target. We were all there. Apart from Max and Dustin

"And near the trailer park." Max said to us and that's when Steve looked at her.

"We're at the trailer park. Uh, maybe we should not be here?" Steve asked as he looked around. I mean, it was a bit creepy.

"There is something about this place. Fred started acting weird the moment we got here." Nancy said to us and I was ready to leave.

"Acting weird as in...?" Robin asked her.

"Scared, on edge, upset." Nance said to us and this place was like a beacon.

"Max said Chrissy was upset too." Dustin said to us. So they were both upset.

"Yeah, but not here. She was crying in the bathroom at school." Max said to us, so it was watching.

"Serial killers stalk their prey before they strike, right? So, maybe Fred and Chrissy saw this Vecman- -" Robin started before she was cut off.

"Vecna." Dustin corrected her. This was definitely his thing.

"Dunno about you guys, but if I saw some freaky wizard monster, I would mention it to someone." Steve said and I nodded.

"I definitely would. I wouldn't keep it myself." I said to him and hopefully someone knew something.

"Maybe they did. I saw Chrissy leaving Ms. Kelley's office. If you saw a monster you...you wouldn't go to the police. They'd never believe you. But you might go to your- -" Max started. You'd go to the person you'd trust.

"Your shrink." Robin said and that's when we knew where to go. As we walked away I went with Nancy. She shouldn't be alone.

"Whoa, whoa, Nance. Y/n. Where are you both going?"steve asked and he stopped us both.

"Oh, there's just something I wanna check on first. Y/n will be with me." Nancy said to him. Hopefully he wouldn't worry about us.

"Something you wanna share witty us?" Dustin asked her and whatever it was. We'd figure it out together.

"I don't wanna waste your time. It's a real shot in the dark." Nancy said and I looked at her with a smile.

"But whatever it is. We'll work it out together." I said to her with a smile.

"Yeah, okay. Are you both out of your minds? Flying together with Vecna creep on the loose? No, it's too dangerous. You need...You need someone to...Here. I'll stick with Y/n and Nance. Take the car, check out the shrink." Steve said as he passed his key to Robin. What he was forgetting was the two of us could handle a gun.

"Don't think you want me driving your car." Robin said as he motioned to his car.

"Why?" Steve asked her and I knew the reason.

"I don't have a license." She said to him and I thought he knew that.

"Why don't you have a license?" He asked her and she looked at him.

"I'm poor." She said and that was fake enough.

"I can drive." Max said and that was bad enough the first time.

"No, never again. Please. Anybody but you. No." Steve said I saw both Hunter and Dustin make a race.

"No chance. You both have no chance." Steve said to them and I could see Hunter's soul fracture a bit from that.

"Come on." They both got out.

"No." Steve said and Robin looked at us.

"All right, okay. This is stupid. Us ladies will stick together. Unless you think we need to protect us." Robin said and I looked at him.

"Just remember we can handle ourselves." I said to him as we started to walk away.

"Be careful." He said to us and we just kept walking as we went to Nancy's car.

"Girls trip. Finally. Even if it's not what they're typically like." I said as we started clambering into it. We ended up at the library. Nancy had caught us both up.

"Help me get this straight. Eddie's uncle, Wayne, thinks that Victor Creel escaped from Pennhurst Asylum and that he's the one running around committing these murders?" Robin asked her. Making sure she had the facts right.

"I mean, if that's right it wouldn't surprise me." I said to her and I didn't even know who he was. But if he's like what Nance was saying that maybe he could.

"Pretty much." Nancy said to us.

"But Victor committed the eyeball murders, like, way back in the '50s." Robin said and that wouldn't mean he'd stop now.

"Well, '59." Nancy said to us.

"So close to the 60's." I said to them as we started to enter into the library.

"So, that means these murders predate Eleven in the Upside Down by about 30 years?" Robin asked as we entered and walked over to the counter.

"Yeah." Nancy said to her.

"Which makes spooky Victor Creel like 70 years years old." Robin said and I looked at her.

"Sounds about right." I said to her with a nod. I didn't do the maths but it sounded right.

"Yep." Nance said and she rang the bell on the counter.

"So, he's a grandpa murderer who can turn invisible and lift people into the air." Robin said and that didn't sound correct but it had to be.

"It doesn't make sense. I know. That's why I said it was a shot in the dark." Nancy told us and I looked at her.

"Or it might not be. You never know." I said to her, he might have an accomplice doing all it now.

"I know. I just thought that by 'shot in the dark', you were being modest or hiding something super solid up your sleeve that you were gonna wow us with later. But this is really, truly a shot in the dark. Like, we are snipers with blindfolds on who've been spun around 50 times." Robin said and Nancy just kept pushing the button.

"Coming!" The librarian shouted as came around. Pile of books in hand.

"Hi. Sorry, we're in a bit of a rush. Could we get the key to the basement archives?" Nancy asked her with a smile and hopefully we would.

"Of course. Give me one sec." She said as she walked off to get us the key.

"Did I come off mean or condescending?" Robin asked her, I don't think Nance was taking to Robin so easily.

"No." Nancy said to her.

"Right. Sorry. It's just, you seem annoyed. You don't me very well. I don't really have a filter or a string grasp of social cues. Y/n can confirm that." Robin said to her.

"Okay." Nancy said to her but I knew that Robin wasn't done.

"If I say something that upsets you, just know that I know it's a flaw. Believe me, my mother reminds me daily." Robin said to her and I don't think it was a flaw. It gave her character.

"But she's incredible as well and I don't we wouldn't survived last summer without her." I said to the both of them and I saw Robin smile at me.

"Got it." Nancy said to us both.

"All right, ladies. Here you go. Have fun." The librarian said as she came back with the key. Handing it over to Nancy.

"Yep. We'll try." Nancy said whilst looking at Robin. I hope that they would start talking more. They were two of my friends and I'd hate it if they weren't the. It was going to be awkward. Once we'd got the articles we needed we started reading them.

"Anything...juicy over there?" Robin asked and I looked at her.

"Not yet. How about you Nance?" I asked her although I couldn't see her.

"Nothing new." Nance said to us both.

"Yep, same here. Victor seemed like a normal guy. Dead family, missing eyes, took a plea deal, sent to Pennhurst. Blah, blah, blah, blah." Robin said as she then peered around to look at Nancy. "What are we looking for exactly?" Robin asked her.

"Because it seems to be the same in every article." I said to Nance.

"Nance?" Robin asked before knocking a pattern. "Any mention of dark wizards or alternate dimensions? Things in that vein?" Robin asked her and it had to be.

"I don't know. Okay? It's starting to seem like this was a big waste of time. And you're both obviously bored. Y/n why don't you call Steve? I'm sure he'll pick you up. And I mean, I'm not really in danger here, so..." She then walked off back to the records area. I then followed her down.

"You know, I'm staying because you shouldn't be looking through this alone. Besides Steve's got more important things to do that I'm not interrupting." I said to her and I didn't even know where to call him from.

"What?" She asked and I looked at her.

"And if this is about not being able to see Johnathan because I know you guys are still on and have that college thing to look forward. Then I will do all I can to make sure you guys see each other before spring breaks over. But trust me, I do not need Steve. This is a girls day for now." I said to her unless we had somewhere else to be. That's when Robin had picked something up.

"Holy shit. The Weekly Watcher. I can't believe they have this." Robin said to us and I'd never heard of that before.

"Ding they write about, like, Bigfoot and UFOs?" Nancy asked and I looked at Robin.

"First, UFOs are absolutely real. Bigfoot I'm still on the fence about. But may I remind you we are looking for information on dark wizards? If someone's gonna write about that, it's gonna be these weirdos." Robin said and I looked at her with a smile.

"I think you've just found our lead.! I said to her with a smile. We then started running it in the machine.

"Ah. 'Elvis cloned by aliens'." Nancy said to us and who knew.

"You never know." Robin said to her and she kept looking. I was looking with her. Nancy walked away.

"Stop. This is it." I said to her with a smile.

"'Victor Creel claims vengeful demon killed family. The murder that shocked a small community'." Robin read out. This was it. This was what we'd been looking for.

"Ha, ha. That's ver funny." Nancy said to her. She didn't believe her. But she should.

"I'm not kidding. Get over here." Robin said to her.

"We've found what we're looking for." I said to her and Nancy came over to us.

"'According to several insiders, Victor believed his house haunted by an ancient demon. Victor allegedly hired a priest to exorcise the demon from his home.' Pretty novel for the '50s. Exorcist wasn't out yet." Robin said to us and I started reading a hard.

"Keep...keep going." Nancy said to her and Robin out the next page in view.

"Okay, so Victor claimed this exorcism failed, but it angered this demon, which then murdered his family, removing their eyes. Victor believed he was spared as a punishment." Robin said to us and if this was Vecna. Then he'd be around for a long time.

"That's pretty convenient for Victor." Nancy said to us. Like she was buying this.

"Yeah, or super inconvenient. Victor was declared legally insane by the court, right? What if this is why? It sounds insane. Just didn't go public because- -" Robin started and that's when Nancy finished her sentence.

"The plea bargain. The records were sealed." Nancy said to her.

"What if a demon did invade Victor's home? It's just, this demon wasn't any old demon." Robin said to us.

"It was Vecna." Nancy and I said at the same time.

"He's been here longer than us and watching." I said to them both before we left. We had to get in contact with the others.

"Dustin, do you copy?" Robin asked over the radio as we left.

"Yeah, I copy." He said to us.

"So, Nancy's a genius. Vecna's first victims date back all the way to 1959. Her shot in the dark was a bull's-eye." Robin said to her and hopefully they'd found something as well.

"Okay, that's totally brokers, but I can't really talk right now." Dustin said back and he sounded worried. We then started to get into Nancy's car.

"What are you doing?" She asked him.

"Breaking and entering school to retrieve confidential and extremely personal files." He said and it went static. Something wasn't right.

"Can you repeat that?" She asked him.

"Just get your ass over here, stat." He said to us and hopefully there was a reason for this. "We'll explain everything." He added.

"Thought they were talking to Ms. Kelley." Nancy said to us.

"We leave them alone for two hours." Robin said to us.

"We should've known they'd do something like this." I said to him and that's when we started towards the school. We'd found more out tonight that what we initially thought and that was just what we needed to ensure that Eddie would be okay.
