26. The Hellfire Club
It had been a few months since the Byers had left for California. They got out of Hawkins when they could. Hunter had started high school and was doing basketball and Hellfire Club. He wanted to be in Eddie's part and at the same time he wanted to play sports with Lucas. "Hunter come on, your gonna be late." I shouted up to him from the stairs.
"I'm coming. Give me a minute." He shouted back to me. But if he didn't come down soon, I'd leave without him.
"You've got ten more seconds then I'm leaving." I said to him and that's when he appeared at the top.
"I'm coming!" He shouted and he then went straight to the kitchen. I looked at him.
"You don't have time! Let's go now!" I shouted at him. I'd be glad when spring break was in effect.
"I'm coming!" He shouted and that's when he went out the front door. I then left behind him locking the door. Driving back to the place I'd barely left.
"So, how's basketball going?" I asked him as I'd barely seen him. Well that's what it felt like.
"It's going well. I'm glad your attending the pep rally." He said to me and I smiled at him. Well I wasn't watching alone. Steve was meeting me there.
"Not alone either. Besides the next time you have a game, give me some notice a week before. Mom wants to make a banner." I said to him and he shook his head at me making me laugh.
"Please, no. Don't let that happen." He said to me and I started laughing. Once we made it to Hawkins High I parked up. And Hunter ran out immediately I then saw Steve.
"You wanna go somewhere for breakfast?" Steve asked me and I looked at him with a smile. That was one thing I didn't get to eat this morning.
"I'd kill for some breakfast." I said to him and he smiled at me.
"Then breakfast it is." He said to me and I got in his car. I could mine up later. "So, how's Hunter getting along with basketball?" He asked me and I looked at him with a smile.
"He's got another game tonight. You should come." I said to him with a smile. And he smiled as well.
"I wouldn't miss it. You know, I can give him some lessons, you know how good I was." He said to me and I looked at him. I would pass that on.
"I'll pass but I don't know if he'll take it. He's trying to fall in with the basketball guys completely." I said to him and I knew he'd have questions.
"What about Henderson and Mike? I thought they were best friends." He said to me and I didn't actually know what was happening with that.
"I don't know. He's in Hellfire as well, it's like he wants the best of two worlds that don't go together." I said to him and I could tell that he was confused. Entirely.
"How does that even work? It makes no sense." Steve said to me and I had to agree.
"I don't think it does work." I said to him that's when we stopped for a quick breakfast. We then headed to work. It had been a few hours and that's when I heard the phone go. "Family Video, how many help you today?" I asked answering the phone.
"Y/n, it's me. Dustin. I have a question for you." He said to me and I looked at Steve.
"Okay, what is it?" I asked him and hopefully it wasn't anything bad. No more Demo-dogs.
"Ask away." I said to him with a smile.
"So, we need two people for Hellfire tonight and I wanted to know if you'd fill in. Being Hunter's sister and all." He said to me and I shook my head. I wasn't missing the game to play D&D.
"Sorry, but no. I'm watching the game tonight." I said to him and I heard him sigh.
"I'm disappointed in you Y/n. Can you pass me over to Steve?" He asked and I looked around and spotted Steve.
"Steve! It's Dustin." I said and he took the phone from me. I then started making sure everything was in place around the store. As time pass on it was time for the game. I was heading in with Steve.
"Let's go Tigers! Let's go Tigers!" I heard the cheerleaders say as we walked in.
"Hopefully we can win the championship this year." I said Steve and he looked at me.
"Y/n, I love you but please don't remind me of that." He said as we went to out seats. Once we sat down I saw Hunter. I was proud of him.
"Everyone now please rise for our national anthem." The principal told us and we all stood up. "Singing for us tonight, we have a very special guest. All the way from Nashville, our very own Tammy Thompson!" He announced and everyone clapped and cheered. I then looked at Steve. This was going be bad. We then looked at Robin.
"O say, can you see by the dawns early light..." She started and I looked at Steve. This was awful.
"Told you. Muppet." Steve whispered to Robin and I.
"Okay, she does sound like a muppet." Robin whispered back to us. I then looked at Steve.
"How long until our suffering is over?" I whispered to Steve and I saw him smile at me.
"Not soon enough." He said to him. And Tammy kept singing. This was worse than anything we've ever faced here. When the game started I was watching Hunter. Hopefully get into play this time. And when he was pulled on, I cheered.
"Come on, Hunter!" I shouted with a smile. I saw Steve cheering as well. This game was going to be close but the Tigers were doing well.
"Shoot it!" Steve shouted and one point.
"That's it Hunter!" I shouted and that's when a timeout was called. The band the continued playing until play resumed. Hopefully this was where we could turn this play around and win. I saw Lucas with ball. Only a few seconds to. And he went to shoot it. The game had ended but the ball was still flying. Steve and I stood up. It felt like this was going in slow motion. That's when the ball went into the basket. We won. Steve and I cheered together. I was so proud. When the game was over I went to Hunter.
"I'm so proud if you. You scored a few time and made us proud." I said as Steve was behind. I looked at him.
"You know, I never would've expected that from you. But you reminded me of myself." Steve said to him and Hunter looked at him.
"I don't know if that's a good thing or not but thank you. Y/n, the teams hosting a party. Can you just let Mom and Dad know that I'll be late home?" He asked me and I looked at him. I had to let him again but I didn't want him to at the same time.
"Go, but no drinking. Mom will skin you alive and remember your going to California in the morning so you gotta be awake." I said to him and he smiled at me.
"I'll be there for an hour no longer." He said to me and I smiled at him.
"Good kid. Have a great time. Don't drink." I said to him and that's when he walked away.
"He's off to California?" Steve asked me and I nodded as we walked away.
"He's going with Mike to see Will and El. Besides it'll be safer. If anything happens in Hawkins he'll be across country." I said to him with a smile. That's what I had to keep thinking of. Nothing bad ever happens in California.
