22. The Flayed

We were still falling. It felt like forever. Just constant falling. All of us screaming and holding on for our lives. "Shit! Shit!" Dustin shouted at this was clearly the end of us.

"We're going down! We're going down!" Steve shouted at all of us.

"I had noticed!" I shouted to him. I'd moved so I was grabbing onto one of shelves. I was surprised it hadn't broken yet.

"Yeah, no shit, Harrington!" Robin shouted we were all on edge let's face it.

"Why don't these buttons work?!" Dustin shouted and that's when I could hear Steve screaming still. Erica then went over to the panel.

"Press the button!" Erica shouted at Dustin. This was a lost cause.

"What do you think I'm doing?" Dustin shouted and clearly he wasn't otherwise we would've stopped.

"Come on, press something! Just press the button!" Steve shouted at him and that's when Dustin screamed.

"Push it!" Erica shouted and that's when the elevator came to a stop. We all landed with a thud.

"Oh!" Steve got out. He then looked at me. "Are you okay?" He asked me and I nodded at him.

"I'm okay. Are you?" I asked him and he looked at me.

"My groin. It fell on my groin. Dustin! Get this off of me!" He said and that's when I saw the box on him. That wasn't going to be too good. "I can't move." Steve said and I stood up and went to help him up to his feet before he wrapped an arm around me.

"Is everyone ok?" Robin asked and I definitely was. I couldn't say the same about Steve.

"Yeah, I'm great, now that I know that Russians can't design elevators!" Steve shouted as he let go of me and went over to the panel. I just wanted out of here already.

"I think we've clearly established that those buttons don't work." Robin said to Steve.

"We just gotta wait for something to happen." I said to him. Nothing was going to help us now.

"They're buttons. They have to do something." Steve said to the both of us. But we couldn't do anything.

"Yeah, if we had a keycard." Robin said and that's why nothing worked.

"A what?" Steve asked her and I was glad to know that there was nothing we could've done to get us out of this position.

"It's an electronic lock. Same as the loading dock door. if we don't have a keycard, it won't operate, meaning- -" Robin started as she went over to Steve.

"We're stuck in here." Dustin said to us and I looked at them all.

"Well, who would've thought we'd miss out on July 4th for this." I said to myself. Especially since it was July 4th in a few hours.

"Yeah." Robin said to us all.

"Just so you nerds are aware, I'm supposed to be spending the night at Tina's, and Tina always covers for me. But if I'm not home for Uncle Jack's party tomorrow and my mom finds out you four are responsible, she's gonna hunt you down, one by one, and slit your throat." Erica said to us and I wasn't scared of Mrs. Sinclair especially since I got on well with her.

"I don't care about Tina! Or Uncle Jack's party! Your mom's not gonna be able to find us if we're dead in a Russian elevator!" Steve said to her and she didn't know what to say.

"Steve, calm down a bit." I said to him and he just needed to take a couple of breathes and maybe he'd calm down.

"Hey. What if we climbed out?" Dustin asked as he pointed up to the hatch on the ceiling. That's when him and Steve opened it and the two of them went out to look before retreating back.

"We're not climbing out." Steve said and I had lost all hope completely.

"Great, so we're stuck." I said and this would be a day or night we had no idea. All I knew was I was tired.

"Code red, I repeat, code red. Does anyone copy? This is a code red, I repeat, a code red. This is a code red, I repeat, a code red. Does anyone copy? We are innocent children and we are trapped under Starcourt Mall. The Red Army has infiltrated Hawkins, and if we are found, they will torture and kill us." I heard Dustin say from the roof. Steve then left from beside me to go talk to him.

"Hey. Gotta take it easy on that thing. You're gonna drain the battery." I heard Steve say before I went over to Robin.

"This is literal hell." I said to her and she looked at me.

"You can say that again. Did you even get any sleep last night?" She asked me, Steve and I must've kept her awake.

"A little bit. Steve and I had to watch over the kids. Talking was the only thing that would stop us from falling asleep." I said to her before we saw a liquid run down the wall. Piss. It was piss.

"Can you redirect your stream, please?" Robin asked and that's when we saw it move away.

"Much better." I said to him. I then heard a banging sound. "Erica, quit that." I said as she was banging the capsule of the green liquid.

"Hey, hey! Be careful, careful, careful! We don't even know what that is." Robin said as she took it from her.

"Exactly. It could be useful." Erica said to us and I looked at her.

"How?" I asked her. It wasn't going to get us out of here.

"Useful how?" Robin asked her and I was wanting to know.

"We can survive down here a long time without food, but if the human body doesn't get water, it will die." Erica said to us and I looked at her.

"But you don't even know what this is. It could be acid." I said to her, would she still drink it if she knew it would kill her.

"I hate to break it to you, but this is not water." Robin said to her and Erica looked at the both of us.

"No, but it's a liquid, and of it comes down to me drinking that shit or dying of thirst, I drink." She said and clearly she would drink it no matter what. We then heard a whirring noise.

"What's that?" I asked as I pressed my ear against the door.

"I don't know." She said to me and that's when I looked at her.

"Go tell the boys." I said to her, that's she. We all went onto the roof. I could hear them talking below. Steve was watching them. And once they'd left Steve put the capsule to hold the door. Erica went down after him, followed by Dustin. Then Robin. It was my turn.

"Go, Y/n. I'll be there in a second." He said to me and I slid under. The capsule was breaking and he barely made it out.

"Come on, Steve, let's go!" Robin said and it broke. Spilling the substance everywhere.

"Jesus Christ." Steve said as he looked at it. He took my hand for comfort.

"Ooh!" Erica got out and I looked at her.

"Acid. Like I said." I said to her with a smile.

"You still wanna drink that?" Robin asked her and I think the answer would be no.

"Holy mother of God." Dustin said as we all started to look behind. The hallway was never ending.

"Well...hope you guys are in good shape. Looking at you, roast beef." Steve said as he started walking I went with him. We then noticed no one else was coming. "Let's go, come on." He said and the rest followed.

"Why me?" Dustin asked. Hopefully my morning runs from the Oregon days would come in handy. I was hoping that Dad and Hunter would be ok. Mainly my brother, who knew what he was getting up with. We'd been walking for what felt like forever. "I mean, you have to admit, as a feat of engineering alone, this is impressive." Dustin said and I couldn't do with this style of conversation now.

"What are you talking about? It's a total fire hazard. There's no stairs, there's no exit, there's just an elevator that drops you halfway to hell." Steve said and he wasn't wrong with that. If a fire broke out. We'd be fucked.

"They're Commies. You don't pay people, they cut corners." Erica said to us and I was wondering how much longer we'd be walking for.

"To be fair to our Russian comrades, I don't think this tunnel was designed for walking. Think about it, they developed the perfect system for transporting that cargo." Robin said to us and we needed a golf cart or something.

"It all comes into the mall like any old delivery." Dustin said to us all.

"No one would suspect anything." I said it would be hidden.

"And then they load it up onto those trucks and nobody's the wiser." Robin said to us all. This was planned the whole time.

"You think they built this whole mall so they could transport that green poison?" Steve asked us all. There's probably way worse things then poison down here.

"I very seriously doubt it's something as boring as poison. It's gotta be much more valuable, like promethium or something." Dustin said to us and I had no idea what that was at all.

"What the hell is promethium?" Steve asked and I looked at Dustin.

"It's what Victor Stone's dad used to make Cyborg's bionic and cybernetic components." Robin said and I had no idea that she even liked that kind of thing.

"You're all so nerdy, it makes me physically ill." Erica said and I looked at her.

"Don't group me with those to. I'm not like that." I said to Erica. She knew I wasn't. I then looked at Steve.

"No, no, no. No, don't lump me in with them. I'm not a nerd, all right?" Steve said to her, we had to cover our backs.

"Why so sensitive, Solace, Harrington? Afraid of losing cool points to a ten-year-old child?" Robin asked and it wasn't the case for me. I just wanted people to know that I wasn't a nerd.

"No, I'm just saying I don't know Jack shit about Prometheus." Steve said to them all.

"I don't either. Never heard of it." I said to them and that's when Dustin looked at us.

"Promethium. Prometheus is a Greek mythological figure, but whatever. All I'm saying is, it's probably being used to make something." Dustin said to us and this hallway just felt like it was getting longer.

"Or power something." Robin said to us all.

"Like a nuclear weapon?" Dustin asked and I would've called that as well. Nuclear warfare.

"Totally." Robin said to us.

"Then should we even be walking this way." I said because this clearly wasn't safe at all.

"Walking towards a nuclear weapon. That's great. That'd be great." Steve said to us sarcastically.

"But if they're building something, why here? I mean, Hawkins. Seriously. Of all places. At the very best, we're a toilet stop on your way to Disneyland, but maybe that's it. Maybe it's our very..." Robin said and we kept walking. She was talking about everything when we realized the boys were talking to each other behind us. "I'm sorry, is there something you'd like to share with the class?" She asked them.

"Please, share with us." I said to them and they weren't silent. We then heard Russian over the radio.

"Walkie." They both said and we started listening. Robin started to recite it.

"It's the code." She said, we were close to the course.

"Wherever that broadcast is coming from- -" Dustin started and I looked at him.

"It's close. And if there's one thing we know about that signal..." Robin trailed off looking over at Dustin.

"It can reach the surface." Dustin said.

"We can get a message out." I said to them all. We'd finally be safe.

"Let's go." Robin said and we went to go find the source. We then made it down to the place with workers.

"Okay, clear. Clear, come on, let's go." Steve said as he went in front. I was the last person.

"Okay, that was close." Robin said to us all.

"Too close." Dustin said to us and I looked at him.

"We we're fine." I said to him and we were. We hadn't got caught.

"Relax. All right? Relax. Nobody saw..." Steve said before he stopped. We found the hub. "Shit." He got out when we saw an armed guard look our way. We then hid. "Jesus!" He got out.

"Red Dawn." Dustin said to us all.

"I saw it. First floor, northwest." Erica said to us.

"Saw what?" Steve asked her, I hadn't seen anything.

"The comms room." Erica said to him and he looked like he didn't believe her.

"You saw the comms room?" He asked her in disbelief. I was a bit shocked as well.

"Correct." Erica said and I was glad that she'd spotted it.

"Are you sure?" Dustin asked wanting some clearance.

"Positive. The door was open for a second, and I saw a bunch of lights and machines and shit in there." Erica said so she wasn't even sure it was. That could be a control room for all we knew.

"That could be a hundred different things." Dustin said to us.

"I'll take those odds." Robin said and I looked at them.

"I'd rather chance it then wait here." I said to them all and we all peeked out into the hub area.

"All right. We're gonna move fast, we're gonna stay low. Okay?" Steve whispered to us and I nodded. I would do that.

"Okay." Robin and I whispered back and that's when we went on the move.

"Shh! Move it." Steve said and we got down again. The door then opened and someone walked out. "Let's go." He said and we went into the room. "Sh. Sh. Come on." He said before he closed the door. There was someone there. Robin and him started talking before Steve started to fight him. Steve won.

"Holy shit! He did it!" I said while looking at Dustin.

"Dude! You did it! You won a fight!" Dustin said and Steve looked down at the guard.

"Jeez..." Steve said and I went over to him and hugged him.

"I'm so proud of you." I said before I kissed him. I was so proud of him. Dustin then started checking the guards pockets.

"What are you doing?" Erica asked him and hopefully it was something useful.

"Getting us our ticket out of here." Dustin said to us and I knew what he was getting. A keycard.

"You want to walk all the way back?" Erica asked him and yes, we would have to do that.

"Well, we can hang out for a little bit, relax, have a picnic maybe." Dustin said to her and I knew that was a lie. He wanted out of here.

"Have a picnic? We came here for the radio." Erica said and I saw Robin start walking away. Up a staircase. I then followed her the room was lighting up. When we peeked through the glass in the door. I knew what caused the power cut. We then went back down the stairs.

"Guys." We said getting their attention.

"There's something up there." Robin said to them and I looked at them all.

"I think it caused the power cut the other day." I said to them as we then went back upstairs. We went through the door.

"Let's go." Steve whispered to us. We looked in through the other doors.

"Holy shit." Dustin got out. They'd reopened the gate. They were using some kind of beacon to open the gate again. I looked at Steve. We would never have normal lives for as long as we were here.
