20. The Case of the Missing Lifeguard
I still couldn't believe what we'd uncovered. Russians in Hawkins. When I got home I saw Dad. He looked at me with a smile. "Hey, mija, everything alright?" He asked me and I looked at him with a nod.
"Yeah, everything's fine. You don't need to worry about anything." I said to him trying to sound normal but not.
"Well that was not convincing at all. But have you seen that none of these godforsaken magnets are sticking." Dad said and I went to look at the fridge. On the floor was just a mess of papers. The ones that had been on the fridge since we moved.
"That's strange. Mom won't be happy." I said to him and he looked at me. He had a sense of fear in his eye.
"As if the hospital wasn't stressful enough. She's gotta deal with this as well. You know what might be going on?" He asked me and I looked at him shaking my head.
"Not at all." I said and he looked at me.
"Mija, tell me the truth." He said to me and I looked at him.
"Don't tell anyone. Not even Hunter, not yet at least. Dustin, Steve, Robin and I have been translating a message. It's Russian." I said to him and then I walked away. Sparing any conversation that could be had. The next day. Whilst Steve, Dustin and I were people watching, Robin was continuing with her translating.
"You see anything?" Dustin asked Steve and I. I shook my head.
"Not yet." I said to him.
"Uh, I guess I don't totally know what I'm looking for." Steve said to us and I didn't either.
"Evil Russians." Dustin said to us both.
"Easier said then done." I said to him as I continued to scan the room.
"Yeah, exactly. I don't know what an evil Russian looks like." Steve said and I was still surveying the room.
"Tall, blond, not smiling." Dustin said and that was hard when people looked like that Russian or not.
"Mm-Hmm?" Steve and I hummed out.
"Also, look for earpieces, camo, duffel bags, that sort of thing." Dustin said and that was impossible.
"Right, okay, duffel bags. Oh, you've gotta be kidding me." Steve said to us and I looked at him.
"What?" Dustin and I asked him.
"Anna Jacobi's talking with that meathead Mark Lewinsky." Steve said and I looked at them.
"That's just a dumpster fire waiting to happen." I said to him. They would never work.
"If you're not gonna focus, just gimme the binoculars." Dustin said to the two of us but we didn't listen.
"Aw, Jesus Christ, whatever happened to standards? I mean, Lewinsky never even came off the bench." Steve said and I remember watching all of Steve's games and he was right. Mark was always on the bench.
"Dude, you are the worst spy in history, you know that? Give me those." Dustin said as he reclaimed the binoculars.
"Stop, hey. Stop." Steve said to him and I managed to keep my binoculars.
"I don't get why you're looking at couples. You are in the perfect one with Y/n." Dustin said to him and I smiled.
"I mean we are pretty great." Steve said to him and I smiled.
"Perfect. Perfect. Perfect." Dustin kept saying correcting Steve's answer.
"We are perfect." I said and the two of them started bickering back and forth.
"No, man, we are pretty great. Not perfect yet." Steve said and I looked at him.
"Whilst you two talk guy things, I'm gonna go and help Robin." I said as I started walking away and heading to Scoops Ahoy. I was hoping she'd worked something out.
"You escaped." Robin said as I went into the back room.
"Trust me, it was time. They were having guy talks and I couldn't stand it. How's the translating going?" I asked her as I leaned on the window.
"I'd say I've made progress but I'd be lying." She said to me and I looked at her with a smile.
"Well, no need to worry now. Backup has arrived." I said to her with a smile before the bell dinged and she gave me the recorder.
"Good luck." She said before I closed the window and started listening to it. I was hoping to uncover something. Hopefully another sentence and that's when I got another word right and I put it on the wall. Soon we opened the sliding window again and I gave her the notepad. "'The week is long. The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west. A trip to China sounds nice if you tread lightly.'" Robin said as she read the pad.
"That doesn't sound right with the last part." I said and Robin picked the translation book back up.
"'Tread lightly'?" She asked and that's when we heard knocking on the door. She went to answer it and it was the delivery guy.
"Delivery for you." He said to her as she opened the door. Taking the box from him.
"Thank you." She said and passed it to me. Signing for it. We then looked at his company.
"Have a nice day." He said to her.
"Yeah, you too." She said to him and she went out the door. I then poked my head out and saw it.
"Silver cat. Silver cat." We said together and I put the box down. We then ran into the main mall area. Running past Steve and Dustin. Jumping on a bench.
"'A trip to China sounds nice.'" She said and we looked around. "A trip to China sounds nice." Robin said as we still looked.
"There." I said to her pointing to the Imperial Panda. The Chinese restaurant.
"A trip to China sounds nice." She said and let out a gasp.
"'If you tread lightly'." We both said together.
"If you tread..." she said and her eyes landed on the Kaufman Shoes.
"If you tread lightly. 'When- -when blue and yellow meet in the west'." We both said and looked around. The clock had yellow and blue hands.
"Robin. Y/n. What are you doing?" Steve asked us and we looked at each other.
"We cracked it." We both said to him with a smile. The code has been cracked.
"Cracked what?" He asked and I looked at her with a smile.
"We cracked the code." She said to him and I looked at them.
"It's to do with this mall." I said to them with a smile. We were always going to crack it because we worked here. I then heard the thunder from outside jumping.
"Hey, come here." Steve said as he knew it scared me a bit. I then went to him and he took my hand. We the mall closed we grabbed our coats and watched shipment come in for the mall. Steve had his arm around me as I was jumping with every clap of thunder.
"Look for Imperial Panda and Kaufman shoes." Robin said to the two of them.
"It's to do with that." I said to them and I looked at Steve and Dustin.
'They're with that whistling guy, ten o'clock." Dustin said to us and I looked in that direction.
"What do you thinks in there?" Steve asked and I wouldn't want to know the answer.
"Guns, bombs?" Dustin said giving a list of options.
"Chemical weapons?" Robin asked suggesting something else.
"Nuclear warfares stuff?" I asked them all. I was hoping it wasn't.
"Whatever it is, they're armed to the teeth." Dustin said and we had no chance.
"Great. That's great." Steve said and I saw the door open.
"Hey, what's in there?" Robin asked and it was a storage room.
"It's just more boxes." Dustin said to us. He was the one with the binoculars.
"Let me check it out." Steve said to and he started to take the binoculars. Although Dustin wasn't letting them go.
"No, I'm still looking." Dustin said to him.
"Lemme see it." Steve said to him.
"Hang on!" Steve shouted and that's when they thudded. And we ducked down instantly. Hopefully they didn't spot us. I grabbed Robins hand as I cuddled into Steve. Once we realized we let go. I heard them showing down there and we went back inside the building.
"Well, I think we found your Russians." Robin said to us all.
"Now we gotta hope that they didn't spot us." I said as we kept walking. That was the last thing I needed. I was just hoping that nothing would become a target on our back.
