10. Trick or Treat, Freak

It was that day of the year again. It was Halloween. That only meant it was the day of the party. This morning Hunter was getting ready in his ghost busters outfit. "Y/n, can you take pictures for me." He said to me and gave me a Polaroid camera. I took him from him.

"Of course you dork, now up against the wall." I said to him and he laughed at me.

"I'll let that slide this time." He said to me and he stood up against the wall and started doing poses as I took his picture. Once I got to school Steve and I were doing studying together when my pencil broke. I then went to go and sharpen it. I was just thinking back to going to dinner with Barb's parents.

"Y/n. What's going on? Are you okay?" Steve asked me and I snapped out of my thoughts. I took his hand.

"We need to talk." I said to him before pulling him into a room. "I can't keep up with this whole act." I said to him and he looked at me.

"What act?" He asked me worriedly.

"Pretending like everything's okay and that nothing happened." I said to him and he grew worried I could tell.

"What are you talking about?" He asked me and I didn't know how to even say it.

"Barbara. That whole night and it seems like no one even cares anymore. Only her parents do. And now they're making themselves live in what hotels because their selling up their house." I said to him and he grabbed my hand and I didn't know what to even say anymore.

"Y/n- -" He started and I looked at him.

"But they're going to dedicate the rest of their lives trying to find her when we're the ones with the answers." I said to him and I was just speaking all of my truth. I wanted to come clean.

"I know." He said to me.

"Its destroying them and I want to help." I said to him, I wanted to help by telling them the truth.

"I know. Okay? I get it. But listen, there's nothing we can do about it." He said to me and I looked around and shook my head.

"What if we do tell the truth." I said to him and he looked at me like I was crazy.

"Well, you know that we can't do that." Steve said to me and I looked at him, why couldn't we.

"We wouldn't have to say everything just a little bit." I said to him, I just didn't want them to spend all their money going into a dead end.

"This isn't some game, Y/n. If they sound out that we told any..." Steve started before pulling the blinds down. "They could put us in jail. Okay? Or worse, they could destroy our families. They could do anything they want. Okay? Just think about what you're saying." Steve said and I looked down. He was right. Well and truly right. "Hey...hey, hey...Hey, it's...It's hard, but let's...let's just go to Tina's stupid party...wear our stupid costumes that we've been working on for a stupid amount of time, and just pretend like we're stupid teenagers, okay? Can we just do that, just for tonight?" He said to me and I looked up at him.

"Okay, but we don't need to pretend to be stupid." I said to him and he smiled at me.

"Come here." He said to me and held me in his embrace. Where it was safe. "Try not to drink a lot at the party, the last time you were drink it didn't work out okay." He said to me and I thought back to the last party Steve and I went to. I was stumbling around everywhere and having my own little party.

"But I like having a one person party." I told him and he looked at me and shook his head.

"But it's not good getting in that state." He said to me and I sighed and looked up at him.

"Fine, I won't." I said to him and he kissed me. Once school ended I headed home and got in my costume before Steve picked me up and we headed to Tina's.

"We got ourselves a new Keg King, Harrington." Tommy said as him and the new guy, Billy, walked over to us.

"Yeah, that's right!" I heard someone shout.

"Yeah. Eat it, Harrington." Another said and I looked at Steve.

"I'm gonna get a drink." I said to him while placing a kiss on his cheek and I went into the kitchen. "What's this?" I asked a guy in a toga.

"Pure fuel!" He shouted and I decided to grab a cup and I drank it. It wasn't the best tasting.

"Hey...whoa, whoa! Hey...whoa, whoa, whoa! Take it easy. Take it easy. Y/n, Y/n, Y/n..." Steve said as I filled my cup up again and started drinking from it.

"You're the one who said that we should be stupid teenagers tonight. That's what I'm doing." I said to him as I finished my cup and filled my cup up again.

"But not like this." Steve said while looking at me and I looked back at him.

"Let me be how I want." I said to him before walking away to go dance. Steve joined me and I realized my glass was empty.

"Don't even try to get some more." He said to me and I started walking back.

"But I need more." I said to him as I was stumbling over to the drinks again. I then filled my cup up, and that's when Steve tried to grab it.

"Y/n, enough. You've had too much." He said to me and I wasn't letting go of this at all.

"No, it's mine and I'm thirsty." I said to him before the cup spilt all it's contents.

"Oh, Y/n I'm so sorry." He said to me and led me into the bathroom and I stumbled to the sink trying to get it off.

"It's not coming off." I said as I tried wiping it with a flannel.

"I'm sorry, Y/n." He said to me and I looked at him.

"I thought this was what you wanted. All of this." I said to him my eyes narrowing and he shook his head.

"I would never want this. I told you not to drink. You just couldn't stop." He said to me and I looked at him falling into his chest and staying in his arms.

"I couldn't help myself. Thinking of everything with Barb and how I'm scared of being in love." I said to him, I never realized I said that last part until I looked up at him.

"You're scared of being in love with me?" He asked, hurt written in his eyes. I didn't mean that.

"No, it's just this place it sucks the life out of you and it scares me being in love in case those things come back, who knows what would happen. Now help me out of this top." I said to him and he looked at me.

"I'm taking you home." He said to me and he grabbed my arm. I managed to slip out of my top and that just left me with a bra on my top half. I heard people whistle as we headed towards the door.

"Nice pair, Solace!" I heard someone shout and that made Steve look at me.

"You've got a good one, Harrington." Someone else said and Steve stopped in his tracks.

"Leave her alone." He shouted at them and put his jacket over me. He then got me in his car and started driving me home. Once we got to my lonely house on the street, Steve walked me to the front door. "Keys?" He asked me and I looked at him.

"Back pocket." I said to him and he put his hand in my jeans back pocket and pulled my house key out. He unlocked the door and carried me in. He unlocked the door.

"Hey Mr. and Mrs. Solace, I, uh, hope your having a good evening." He said to my parents. I didn't even know they were home.

"Is she okay?" Dad asked him and I felt Steve look and me and then at them.

"She's fine, just tired. I'll let myself out through the window." Steve said and I felt him nod before carrying me upstairs. I heard a door open, I was trying not to sleep on him. I felt him carefully place me on the bed before taking my heels off. I opened my eyes and saw him rummage through my closet for a top and he found one of his sweaters and put it on me. I heard the window open.

"Steve." I said to him and I opened my eyes. He walked over to me and sat on the bed.

"Yes, Y/n." He said as he took my hand.

"Don't go, I don't want to be alone." I said while looking at him and he kissed my forehead.

"I'll stay, as long as your parents never find out. They scare me a little." He said and I let out a little laugh.

"They won't care." I said to him as he led next to me. I rolled on my side and put my head on his chest placing a hand underneath my heas. Falling asleep in his arms without a care in the world.
