{{Chapter 16}}

Amity's eyes widened from the freshman's offer, hesitating to take her hand. She remained speechless yet so scared.

She looked away from Luz's eyes and lowered her hand, leaving her friend's untouched. As much as she wanted to speak up, something was bothering her

With Amity's reaction, Luz's smile suddenly faded as she formed her offering hand into a fist. She looked away from the elite's eyes, feeling hopeless.

She let out a sigh and crossed her arms to her chest. "Why did I even bother asking you? Of course, you're a top student and you won't want anybody to see you hanging out with me, right?"

"Luz, I-" Amity stuttered, unable to continue her sentence. Instead, she only looked back to the illustrator in front and kept her emotions from showing.

"I knew it." Luz smiled and sat back down in her seat. "I-I just wanted you to relax and get away from all the drama. But being a top elite and all, I know you have your priorities and duties."

"Besides, you still hate me."

Amity gasped, recalling the time where Luz first appeared in the club. The tension between them worsen at the time but even after a few days, it weakens.

All the fights, arguments, and disagreements between the two, they still remember it. But after hearing Luz care for the teen made Amity reconsider her perspective for Luz.

Hearing how Luz cared for her made her question her emotions. With her title at stake, she must learn to approach this situation properly

Amity is known to have only one friend, and that was her upper elite, Boscha. Interacting with other lower students may be difficult for her, especially for the teen she once hated, Luz.

Now that the freshman stood silent, Amity took the chance to finally give a proper response to her. She took a deep breath and set aside her pride as an elite.

"Luz, listen." She started, turning to the teen beside her. "I... appreciate what you're trying to do for me, I really do. But as an elite, I represent the dance club along with the other elites. We have duties and work that we couldn't ignore nor neglect."

The freshman sighed. "I know, but... I just want you to relax, even if it's just for a few hours. Remembering what I did a few days ago, destroying the club, putting Boscha in the hospital, and ruining your title. This is the least I could do to cheer you up again."

The elite's eyes started to tear up. "Hey! Y-you didn't put Boscha in the hospital. I was the one who failed to do the trick with her."

"Well, it wasn't yours either, to be honest. That move Boscha forced you to do with her was too hard to nail. You did the best you could and I actually admire you for being brave."

Amity finally smiled, tucking her hair behind her ear. " Heh, still, she's in the hospital because of our main trick for the performance. But enough about that, what did you say a while ago?"

"Huh?" Luz arched an eyebrow. "About me and you getting the heck outta here?"

The elite smiled and nodded her head. "Y-yeah... I-" She kept on stuttering, making Luz's smile grow wider.

"I want to spend time with you, okay?!"

After realizing what she had yelled, Amity quickly covered her mouth and glanced around the place to see if other elites had heard her.

Luckily, all students in the room focused on the topic being discussed in front. Amity sighed in relief and continued to look away from the freshman.

Luz on the other hand was still surprised by Amity's sudden response. Her cheeks reddened as her heart started to beat fast, getting faster every second.

She was speechless, her smile remained but her mind felt slight disbelief towards Amity. She instead ignored it and took a friendly approach.

"Y-you do? Wow." She managed to stammer out, sounding surprised.

"It's not a big deal Nitwit! I j-just think that you're right and I do need a break. Will you... help me out?"

The freshman remained surprised. "Of course I will! But I thought elites don't skip their duties and-"

"Forget about the duties! I mean I don't have any at the moment and this and the club are my only priorities for this day so-" She started, placing a hand behind her neck. "Why not take the chance to take a break and focus on helping the club."

"So-" Luz relaxed her back on the chair, presenting a teasing look. "Amity Blight has a rebelled side, huh?"

"N-No! It's not like that! Ugh, you're unbearable, Noceda." Amity's face palmed herself, causing Luz to burst out a quick laugh.

"Shh- Shush! Idiot. The illustrator will catch us."

"Haha! I'm sorry, okay?" Luz wiped her tears from all the laughing. "It's just, you're so cute when you get angry it's like-"

Once Luz realized what she said, she suddenly let out a weak cough before changed the topic.

"I- mean, yeah sure. I'll help you." She answered, crouching down behind the table to avoid any suspicion from the other students. "Follow my lead."

There she offered a hand to Amity once again, telling her to grab hers for a safer escape out of the room.

But unlike the first attempt, Amity slowly accepted her offer, placing her hand on top of Luz's. Once their hand touched, both felt something electric within them which made them smile and laugh nervously.

"I can't believe I'm sneaking out such an important, feared, precious-"

"Noceda!"

The two giggled as they carefully sneak away from the room, using some of the tables in the back for cover.

Even though The elite felt guilty about neglecting her duties, the fact of taking a break was something she needed. If she spent more time with her older siblings now, she'll surely snap and attack them, as usual.

After Luz and Amity successfully made it out of the room, the two made sure that no one was around nor caught them sneak out.

The freshman smirked in victory, pumping her fist into the air before she pulled Amity into a hug.

"Wooh! Teamwork, baby!" She cheered.

Amity felt her cheeks burning up again. Her heart skipped a beat. But she hesitated on returning the same action to Luz.

She only waited for Luz to part away from the hug before she hides her face with a handkerchief. When the freshman saw her reaction, she giggled and thought she only acted that way because she finally felt comfortable around her.

"You okay? Cause there's no turning back now."

The elite took a few seconds to think, still guilty and unaware of the consequence of the actions she committed.

She looked down and stood silent, avoiding making contact with Luz. It wasn't long until Luz stepped in and took her hand.

"Look, I know what we did was wrong but you deserve this, alright?" She added before pointing in the direction of the nearest exit.

"Do you trust me?"

Amity nodded. "I hate myself for saying this but, I agree with you, Noceda."

"Good enough for me." She chuckled.

There they both ran away with Luz in the lead. Without any of the students nearby, this gave the two the chance to freely explore the campus without any distractions.

Amity continued following Luz's lead, not knowing where she was taking her. Even though she kept looking back at the main building for the elites, she was too scared to back away and leave Luz.

Not only that, she was afraid that it might represent her as the coward of an elite she is. But being with Luz, "does she mind?" was all she could ask herself.

After a few minutes, Luz slowed down and took time to regain her breath, same with Amity. But when she looked up, she realized that Luz had brought her to a private spot near the club room's secret entrance.

"Aren't we going to the club to help the other prepare?" Amity asked confused.

"Nah, I mean we will! But, let's just take some time to relax and... get some time to know each other first."

The elite liked it, yet she doesn't show it. There she sat down and buried her head in her arms. Luz followed and took a seat beside her.

Both were silent for a few minutes, but Luz decided to break the tension. She sighed and looked at the teen beside her, trying to catch a glance of her eyes to somehow figure out what was bothering her.

"So, being an elite isn't easy, huh?" She started to make small talk.

Amity finally looked back to her, revealing her eyes which reflected fear. For Luz, it was easy to figure out what's wrong with the teen, she always considered her weak at handling her feelings. Ever since their first encounter, Amity always showed fear as she cowers over something or someone in specific.

"It's not, Luz."

"Well-" The freshman moved in closer. "Wanna talk about it? Is there something I could do to help?"

Amity gritted her teeth and pushed Luz away. "N-No! There's nothing, I'm stuck with this position and there's nothing I could do about it! And you..."

She pointed a finger at Luz, holding in the anger within her. "You just made it worse. Now all the elites are targeting you and they're now underestimating me because Boscha's gone! I-I I'm just worried that they might hurt or do something to you, Luz!"

"H-hey!" Luz quickly cupped the elite's cheeks and wiped away her tears. "I'm sorry! I'm so dumb to even ask. Look, I brought you out here so you could relax and rest for a while, please don't cry. I'm sorry, okay?"

"I-" Amity was speechless. She sighed as she gently removed Luz's hand. "No, I'm sorry. I just got overwhelmed and I'm still scared, alright? I haven't told anyone this so please, keep it to yourself."

"I promise. I knew something was bothering you, wanna talk about it? Is it Boscha? I mean if you don't want to then it's completely fine!" The freshman nervously tried to explain.

The elite let out a weak giggle. "I don't want to talk about it, I will eventually but now-" She faced Luz's eyes. "I think I need to get it off my mind."

"Atta girl." Luz smiled back. "And don't worry, if they knew we snuck out, I'll handle it. I'll do everything to try to keep you out of this so all the blame could go to me."

"Luz, that's not necessary but... thanks, I guess."

Both chuckled and leaned on the wall. For once, Luz finally saw Amity smiling and getting comfortable around her. All of this was enough to make her heartbeat in some kind of "rhythm"

When suddenly, Amity spoke up again. "Enough about me, what brings you to Hexside, Luz?"

"Me? Hm, I heard this school was leading in the dance career biz so I enrolled! Ever since I was a kid, I've been bullied by my classmates and some upperclassmen. Even though I tried to fight back, I'll always end up in the principal office to take the blame for what they did."

"Oh, Luz. I'm so sorry-"

"No, it's fine, really. I have actually gotten used to it. But after I discovered the art behind dancing, I fell in love with it. Now I grow up with a dream, a dream to be one of the country's best dancers. Enrolling at Hexside is only my first stepping stone, and yet I've ruined so many things."

"You and me... actually have the same reason. But hey, disasters happen in life and we can not avoid them. We just gotta handle them and learn from it, you got me?"

Luz chuckled. "Wow, I didn't know the most feared Blight had this side of her."

"Oh shush you." Amity threw a crumpled piece of paper at her face. "Of course I do, I'm not that bad, you know."

"I know," she replied.

As the two teens continued to talk about their journey in the dance career, Amity couldn't help but move closer to the freshman without her even knowing it.

They laughed, they cheered, they finally understood each other. The elite finally knew what it feels like to have a true friend, she was surprised that she considered Luz one but after hearing what Luz has gone through, she understood her pain.

Hours passed by like minutes, both of them unaware of it. Yet they continued to comfort each other, even opening a wound between their relationship as crewmates.

"H-hey, I'm really sorry about what happened with the dance club, and also for stepping up to you. I just panicked that I might lose my only chance of getting a hold of my career in this club.

"You don't have to open this over and over again, doofus. It's okay and... I'm sorry too. I shouldn't act that way but I couldn't just throw away my title by accepting you into the club."

"You were also representing Boscha, huh? I knew she taught you all of this and look what you've become. I can change that, Amity. We change that! Trust me, You'll be better off with Boscha."

Amity's eyes widened. "You think so? She's the first elite and I'm just the second standing! She's way more superior than me and-"

"She's only human too, Amity!"

"Huh?" Amity gasped. She couldn't believe that she was only realizing this now.

"So what if she's the top elite in the dance club? She's still like us, a normal student like us! She only has some dumb title and that doesn't change anything. Yes, she may be feared and respected by others but that doesn't mean we do the same. I believe in equality, Amity. We all deserve some goddam respect."

After hearing Luz's speech, Amity's mind cleared out. The fear she had towards Boscha suddenly faded, as for the other elites in different clubs. Finally, someone who understood what she wanted all this time, not the elite system that controls the whole campus grounds.

"If only it was that simple, Luz." Amity smiled weakly. "But... it's 2 against the whole campus. We're nothing if we wanted to change the system in this school."

"Wait, you're actually with me?!" Luz gasped.

"Well, yeah. I believe in everything you said. The system we have is nothing but stupid. It puts discipline to us students but it gives power to the ones who took hold of it. Now, every elite in each club has the power and clan to make someone's life miserable if they fail to present the rules."

"N-not only us! I'm sure we have everybody in our club that agrees. Willow, Gus, Viney, and her friends, hey! Maybe even your siblings!"

The elite laughed. "I doubt my siblings want to be included in this but, I'm sure they're nothing but trouble. Yes, I admit they're sometimes reliable but I couldn't stand them!"

Luz placed a hand on her friend's shoulder. "Maybe you just need to spend some more time with them, they're your family, I'm sure they have your back."

"They do but, they're just so annoying and I cant, ugh! I don't know."

"Calm down, they just want you to relax and enjoy. They told me that you've been overdoing too much work and they're worried about you! Please, give them a chance."

The youngest Blight sighed. "I-I, I guess I could give them a chance."

"That's the spirit."

Amity laughed leaned her head on the wall. After their moment today, Amity's perspective towards Luz changed for the better.

But when Luz was about to open up another topic, she felt something on her shoulder. There she realized that the elite had laid her head on her shoulder as she moves closer to the teen.

"H-hey? Everything good?" Luz nervously asked.

"Yeah." Amity calmly answered.

The freshman sighed and let the teen rest on her shoulder. As time passes by, the two suddenly started to get sleepy.

But before Luz could fully doze off. She heard Amity say something that made a smile form on her face.

"Thanks, Luz, for being a friend.."
