They Forgot

Brendon woke up to the sound of his alarm ringing beside his head. Normally, he would groan at the interruption, but today was different.

Today was special.

He unlocked his phone with a wide grin on his face. He bit his lip as he let out an excited giggle. The date waved at him from the top corner. A notification popped down from the top of his screen. His calendar flashed a 'Happy Birthday' message before disappear.

He moved over to his messages and his smile faultered. He had no new messages. He clicked over to snapchat to see nothing but standard good morning streaks.

He stared at the screen in disappointment. It's not like he was expecting a flood of messages, but maybe a couple from his friends or maybe even his boyfriend. He shrugged it off, not wanting to moment to ruin his mood.

He was finally sixteen and today was gonna be epic.

He threw on a tight black shirt and his tightest skinny jeans. He slipped on his converse and styled his hair into the normal hanging fringe and the back spiked up a little.

He almost tripped going down the stairs, but managed to catch himself on the railing. He hurried to the kitchen to see his mother running around.

"Morning," Brendon sang. His mother didn't stop and mumbled a 'morning' back. Brendon looked around and frowned when he didn't notice anyone else. "Where is everyone?"

"Your father left already. Matt met up with some friends for breakfast. Mason had an early practice.Kara slept over at a friend's and Kyla needed to see one of her teachers before school," his mother rushed out, not even looking at him.

"So it's just you and me?" He watch his mother shrug on her jacket and gave him an apologetic smile.

"Sorry sweetie I got a call. They need me at the office so I won't be able to give you a ride." Brendon's shoulders slumped. "Maybe try calling Ryan and see if he'll give you a ride, but I gotta go." He got a kiss on the cheek and she hurried passed him.

"That's it?" Brendon questioned. "You don't have anything you might idk.. want to say to me?" His mother paused, standing at the open door. She looked him over before smiling.

"You look great. Oh and don't forget to eat. I bought fruit loops yesterday." With that, she was gone. Brendon stared at the closed door.

"She forgot," he whispered to himself. He felt his spirit begin to crush before he shook his head. He understood.. in a way. She was a busy woman with five kids. It's easy to forget sometimes.

He pulled out his phone, texting Ryan asking for a ride. His frown deepened when he got the reply.

Sorry babe, not going to school today. Helping my mom today remember? I won't be back till late.

Brendon sniffed softly. Did his own boyfriend forget? Surely he couldn't have. It's not like Brendon hadn't been talking about today for the past month.

His excitement only lessened when he heard the beginning of rain hitting the windows. He let out a sigh. The day just started but at least it couldn't possibly get any worse.

~~~
It got worse.
Brendon stared at the clock as he sat in his last period class. Every class felt like a neverending session of hell. The classes he had were friends had so much work, they couldn't talk. The classes without his friends gave out enough homework to last till his next birthday. Don't even get him started with gym. His lungs still ached when he inhaled after running so much. He didn't even get to have lunch with his friends because he got a detention for dozing off in class.
To top it all off, his phone was as dead as a doornail. People weren't even acknowledging his presents unless they were scolding him or giving him homework.
This was possibly the worse birthday ever. He was drained from the celebratory spirit as he watched the minutes tick by. He didn't rush when the final bell rang. He moved sluggishly in a very unlike Brendon manner.
He was relieved to see that it had stopped raining. He spent the whole day trying to get dry. No one talked to him as he made his way home. When he got to his street, he stopped at the end of the block. He saw his sister's car in the driveway. It gave him some hope.
He ran home and pushed open the front door. He went up the stairs to his sister's room and knocked on the door.
"Kara?" She swung the door open, frowning at her brother.
"What do you want?" Brendon noticed how nice she was dressed. He raised an eyebrow.
"Where are you going?"
"I have a date tonight. Why do you care?" Brendon's face dropped.
"So you're not gonna be here tonight?"
"Why do you care?"
"Where are the others?"
"Do I look like their babysitters? I don't know. Leave me alone. I have to get ready." She shut the door, leaving Brendon to stare at the white wood.
He turned and went to his room. He dropped himself on his bed and let out a sigh. He shut his eyes and tried to push away his negative thoughts.
"Everyone's just busy. That's all," he tried reasoning. He sat up quick when the ringer on his phone went off. He had his message up, the new message opened.
Mom: working late again leftovers for dinner
Brendon dropped the phone and laid back down. The room was silent. He was alone. He curled himself into a ball and buried his face in his pillow.
They all forgot.
It's not like he wanted a parade or anything. Just a simple 'happy birthday' or 'congratulations for not dying yet'. Something.
He felt himself being pulled into a deep sleep. He was grateful for something to stop his thoughts.
He was woken up to a vibration going off next to him. He forced his eyes open and saw his screen phone lit up with a call. Before he moved to pick up the device, the noise ceased.
With a gentle sigh, he looked at the locked screen and saw a few notifications. There were a couple unread messages and the call he just missed, all from Ryan. His phone went off again. A picture of his boyfriend smiling and Ry ❤❤ popped up on the screen.
He accepted the incoming call and brought the phone to his ear. He was still a little groggy from his nap. He didn't even know how long he was sleeping.
"Hello?"
"Bren, why haven't you been answering?" Ryan sounded concerned on the other line. "Is something wrong?" Though it was nice to hear the boy's voice, Brendon was still upset.
"Sorry, I was just sleeping. Didn't hear my phone go off." There was a small sigh on the other line.
"We're still hanging out right? Movie marathon at my place remember." Brendon pulled the phone away and looked at the time. It was almost seven.
"I don't know, Ry. I have a lot of homework I gotta get done," he replied into the reciever. Yeah he wanted to spend time cuddling his boyfriend until they both passed out in the middle of a movie, but he knew Ryan would ask questions about why he was upset. Brendon wasn't in the mood for those questions.
"Babe, you can't cancel movie night. We never cancel movie night," Ryan pouted.
"Ry," Brendon started.
"Please, I'll even pick you up." Brendon sighed and gave in.
"Fine, but if I fail my classes it's your fault." Ryan giggled into the phone.
"I'll be there in ten minutes. Love you!" The call ended before Brendon could reply. He pushed himself out of bed and moved out to the hallway. He should probably let Kara know he was leaving. When he knocked on her door, there was no reply. She must've left already.
He trudged downstairs, noticing that the house was eerily silent. He waited by the front door until Ryan's car pulled into the driveway. When he ran outside, Ryan was waiting to pull him into a hug.
"There's my baby," he whispered softly into Brendon's hair. He planted a quick kiss on the shorter's lips. "Ready to go?"
Brendon nodded and climbed into the passenger seat. Ryan immediately took his hand when they were on the road. Brendon silently hoped he'd get his first birthday wish, but the car ride was completely silent.
When they pulled up to Ryan's house, the light shined behind the living room curtains beside the front door. When Ryan got out of the car, he walked around and opened Brendon's door. They walked up hand in hand to the front door.
Brendon kept his head low and was grateful Ryan didn't question anything. The warmth from inside crawled over Brendon's skin as the door shut behind them.
"Happy Birthday!" A group shouted in unison. Brendon's head snapped up to see his parents, siblings and friends clustered in Ryan's living room. There was a birthday banner hanging on the wall and a birthday cake on the coffee table.
Arms snaked around his waist and a head rest on his shoulders. There was a soft peck on his cheek. Brendon could feel the smile on Ryan's face.
"Happy birthday, baby," he whispered into Brendon's ear.
"You did this?" Brendon turned to look at Ryan. The boy smiled and pulled away as Brendon was showered in hugs.
Happy tears streamed down his face as he look around at his family and friends. Even Ryan's parents, who weren't his biggest fans, were wishing him a happy birthday.
"Why are you crying, sweetie?" Brendon's mother asked in a soft voice. A hiccup caught in Brendon's throat as Ryan brushed away the tears.
"I-I thought everyone for-got," he confessed. Ryan wrapped his arms around him again.
"How could we forget? We knew how important this was for you," Ryan cooed.
"Plus you haven't shut up about it for weeks," Matt added, getting Brendon to chuckle. Brendon turned around and fell into Ryan's embrace. He buried his face in his neck.
"Thank you."
"Anything for you, love. Happy birthday. "
