Nursing Home
Brendon knocked on the door softly before walking in. He saw his grandpa propped up on the bed with his arm extended, pointing a control at the tv.
"Hey, grandpa," he said cheerily. His grandpa turned to him with the wide smile Brendon inherited.
"B, you came!" Brendon chuckled softly and moved to the side of the bed. His grandpa was already leaning toward him and pulled Brendon into a hug.
"Of course I came. Finally got a day off so of course I'd come visit." He pulled a chair up beside the bed and got comfortable in it. "How are you doing? Are they treating you good?"
His grandpa could see the worry lines on the young man's forehead. He was always stress with work, bill, and of course his grandfather.
"I love it here." He smiled to ease his grandson's worrying.
"You're not lying are you? Cause if this is like the last place, we'll find a new one or you'll just have to come home with me." The older man shook his head. With his age and health, he'd give his boy a heart attack from all the added stress.
"I'm serious, B. The staff is fantastic. I got a nurse who takes great care of me. I haven't been this happy since your grandma passed away." Brendon placed his hand over the other man's.
"I'm happy to hear that, grandpa." He rubbed his thumb over the back of the aged hand. His grandpa's free hand came up and cupped the youngster's cheek.
"You grew up so fast. Thought I had more time with you before I needed to be taken care of myself." Brendon chuckled softly.
He admired his grandfather with a passion, idolized him like no other. When his parents passed away in a car crash, his grandparents took him in and raised him. When his grandma died several years back, Brendon knew it was only a matter of time before he lost the last bit of family he had left.
Now, here he was in a nursing home because the old man's health problems were getting too complicated for Brendon to deal with alone. After a few homes that put the man through hell, Brendon finally found a place where the man was happy. It was a little pricier than some other places, but at least his grandad was in good hands.
"Alright, Richard it's time to go - oh, hello." Brendon snapped his head to the door to see a man in nurse scrubs. He looked around his age, a little taller and had wavy brown hair.
"Hi," Brendon replied. He was still taking in the man in front of him to process any other thoughts. He was cute, he couldn't deny that.
"B, this is Ryan, my nurse. Ryan, this is my grandson Brendon," his grandfather introduced. When the old man mentioned the nurse, Brendon just assumed that.. he shouldn't have but... he just didn't think... not that he was complaining that a hot hopefully single male nurse his own age would be here watching over the man who raised him.
"Hi, Brendon. It's nice to finally meet you. Richard's told me so much about you." Ryan walked over and extended his hand out for Brendon to take.
The boy clumsily got to his feet when Ryan approached him. The chair hit the side table and he managed to his his knee on the bed frame. He took the man's hand and gave it a shake. His hand was soft and gone from his reach too quickly Brendon noted
"Uh, hi," Brendon repeated. What else could he say? Brendon hadn't been able to stop by since they moved his grandad here over a week ago. He didn't know about the hot nurse. There was nothing he could say. "Thanks for uh, watching over my grandpa. He really likes it here."
Ryan gave him a friendly smile with a small chuckle and holy shit! Brendon could just melt from the sight. It's not like Brendon hadn't encountered attractive boys before. He has plenty of times, but Ryan was on a whole new level Brendon desperately wanted to unlock.
"It's no problem. I enjoy Richard's company. He has a lot of fun stories." Brendon gave a shy smile back and nodded in agreement. "I was gonna take him for his daily stroll around the garden, but I'll just come back later. It was nice meeting you Brendon."
Before he could reply, Ryan was out the door. He stared out the room processing what just happened. He was snapped by to reality by the sound of an old chuckle.
"Do I need to teach you how to speak again?" His grandfather teased. Brendon rolled his eyes and dropped down onto the seat. He crossed his arms on the bed and rested his chin on his arms.
"You could've warned me." Fingers combed through Brendon's hair.
"I didn't think you'd have an aneurism from meeting my nurse," he laughed again. Brendon huffed and pouted. "Don't think I've ever seen a boy have this affect on you before."
Brendon shook his head and dropped his gaze to the sheets in front of him. He gave a silent thanks to whoever that his grandfather was accepting of Brendon for his career, choices, sexuality, everything.
"I better get going. Gotta be at the shop early tomorrow." He heard a soft 'okay' as he stood him. He bend over the bed and pulled the older man into a tight hug. "I'll be sure to come back soon."
"Can't keep away from my nurse too long?" Brendon groaned as his grandpa let out a laugh. He kissed the man's cheek before pulling away.
"Be good. I'll see you soon. Love you, grandpa."
"Love you too, B."
---
Brendon had been able to visit almost every day after work. He was happy to spend more time with his grandad. He was also excited to see the hot nurse more. He'd tag along with Ryan and his grandpa on their normal routine every now and then.
He'd gotten to know Ryan a lot better during that time. Learned that Ryan was studying to be a doctor, but decided he preferred the nurse to patient interaction better. He was single (yes!) and lived in the same apartment complex a few blocks away. Sometimes, Brendon would intentionally come visit late so by the time he left, Ryan's shift would end and they'd walk home together.
Ryan seemed to adore his grandpa and his grandpa loved Ryan. It pleased Brendon to know someone was truly caring for the man who raised him when he wasn't around. As he watch Ryan care for his grandad in ways he wasn't trained to, it only made the man more perfect in Brendon's eyes. This man could not be real. It was too good to be true.
---
When Brendon got the call, he left work so fast, he almost didn't tell his boss what was going on. When he got to the nursing home, he almost crashed into some other workers and patients to get to his grandpa's room.
As he ran into the room, completely out of breath, he saw Ryan sitting by the bed staring at the man. Brendon's gaze quickly went to the man lying unconsciously in the bed, hooked up to various machines that were unnecessary the day before. He immediately broke down at the sight, getting the attention from the nurse.
Ryan got up and quickly pulled Brendon into a hug. Brendon didn't protest and gripped onto Ryan's shirt with his eyes not leaving the bed.
"He's okay, B." Brendon let out a stuttered breath. He wasn't paying attention. All he could think about was how he almost lost the last important person in his life. "He had a mild heart attack and just needs to rest now. Everything is fine. He's okay."
Figuring Brendon wasn't listening, Ryan pulled back and forced eye contact with the other. Brendon sniffled as he stared into those chocolate colored eyes he became accustomed to.
"He's okay. He's gonna be just fine. Okay?" Brendon nodded in understanding. He's gonna be fine. It was just a scare is all. Ryan pulled him back into another hug. Brendon let out a deep breath to relax his nerves. He took the time to notice Ryan wasn't in his normal work attire.
"What are you wearing?" Brendon sniffed again as he pulled away. Ryan chuckled softly and looked down at his black tshirt and skinny jeans.
"I, uh didn't work today, but got the call that something happened to one of my patients."
"So you came?" Ryan nodded, looking down at his shoes.
"My patients are like family to me. It hurts to see something happen to them."
"Didn't think you owned anything other than scrubs," Brendon joked. He smiled when he earned a short laugh from Ryan.
"Sometimes it feels like that's all I own." Brendon looked over at his grandpa again, worry still sitting in his stomach. He felt a hand on his arm, but didn't look away.
"Want me to stay with you until he wakes up?" Brendon nodded as a tear slipped down his cheek.
"Yes, please."
---
A week and a half after the incident, Brendon's grandpa was almost entirely himself again. He just needed more rest than usual and it practically took a pry bar to separate Brendon from the old man.
"I can do that you know." Brendon looked up and saw Ryan walking into the room. He smiled and went back to his task of tucking his grandpa in. The man was already asleep for the night and Brendon just liked to linger a little just in case.
"I know, but you have other people to take care of." Ryan began clearing the trash the old man made with his dinner. "I can get that."
"It's my job to help care for my people. Are you trying to keep me from doing my job Mr. Urie?" Ryan rose an eyebrow and smirked at Brendon. The younger man smiled and shook his head.
"No, sir." Ryan nodded.
"Good." Brendon sat on the bed near the old man's feet as he watched Ryan work. The man grabbed the clip board hanging off the edge of the bed and began writing things down as he checked over his grandpa.
"What are you doing?" Brendon asked a little nervously. Ryan glanced over his shoulder and smiled. He moved and took a seat on the opposite side of Brendon on the bed. He held the clip board out between them.
"Just doing a small check up making sure everything's alright." Brendon gave him big eyes, silently asking. Ryan chuckled and nodded. "He's doing just fine. Steady heart rate, blood pressure looked good earlier, no evident damage from the heart attack. Richard is doing great."
Brendon let out a small sigh of relief. He'd been told numerous times that his grandad was okay, but it was nice to see the evident. He looked up at Ryan with a smile.
"Thank you." Ryan gave a smile back.
"It's no problem."
"No, I mean it. Thank you. For everything. Caring for him as well as you do. Keeping him company. Being there when I'm not. Helping me stay calm while all this is happening. I appreciate everything you've done for us, for me."
Brendon noticed how they were gradually leaning closer to each other. Ryan's eyes darted down to Brendon's lips quickly and he licked his own.
"It's been my pleasure, B." Brendon copied Ryan's action and licked his own lips. Their heads tilted slightly to the side as their breathed softly over each other's mouth.
Their eyes shut as they closed the distance between them. The kiss was gentle and slowly. Fireworks exploded in Brendon's chest and his fingers started to tingle. He didn't focus on his weird body feelings so much as he did on Ryan's soft lips. He had to hold back a small content moan to save himself some embarrassment.
The sound of the heart monitor beeping pulled them out of their small bubble. Ryan smiles as he pulled away. Brendon bit his lip and looked down at the bed. He knew his face was bright red. He pulled his lip between his teeth to contain a happy giggle.
"I uh," Brendon started as he stood up. Ryan followd suit with a worried expression on his face. "I should get going." Be gave a quick peck on his grandpa's cheek promising to come back the next day.
"Bren." Ryan's voice stopped him before he could escape the room.
"Hmm," he answered with his head still low.
"Would you," he trailed off. Brendin looked up and saw his Ryan shifted his weight around nervously. After a beat, Ryan took a deep breath and continued. "Would you like to go on a date with me?"
Brendon couldn't stop the smile from spreading across his face as he nodded.
"I'd like that."
"Friday? 7 o'clock?" Brendon nodded again more sheepishly. "I'll see you then." With a final nod, Brendon rushed out the room and hurried out of the building where he let out an excited squeal.
---
"No, grandpa. I already told you, the dog was wearing the sunglasses while his owner pushed him on the skateboard."
"So who was wearing the hat?"
"There was no hat."
"No hat? What? I'm confused." Brendon laughed and shook his head.
"It's okay old man." He patted the back of his grandfather's arm as the man moved to take another bite from his pudding cup.
"So, how did the date go Friday?" Brendon dropped his head to hide his smile and blush. He felt a fit of giggled forming at the back of his throat.
"It was amazing. He took me out to the pier to -" He stopped midsentence to look up at the smirk his grandpa was wearing. "How did you know about the date?"
"What?" The man stared at his grandson with a devious smirk.
"You didn't," Brendon gasped. He couldn't have. He was sleeping when Ryan asked. He only got a chuckle in reply and shrugged.
"Didn't what?" This man was many things, but a good actor was not one of them.
"Grandpa!" Brendon smacked the man's leg, getting him to break down in a fit of laughter.
"What? I didn't do anything. Your guys attraction for each other was already there. I just gave it a little nudge."
"How did you do that?"
"When do I ever sleep that much, heart attack or not? And someone had to be there to console you while I recovered." Brendon shook his head in disbelief.
"You made him hold me while I cried for you?"
"Oh no, he's been wanting to hold you for a while now, just needed the opportunity to do so."
"You are an evil, evil man and you're going to hell." The man laughed again.
"Are you happy though?" Brendon bit his lip before nodding. "Going out together again?" Another nod. "Then I'll take any punishment you'll throw at me." Brendon was the one to laugh now.
"I love you, grandpa."
"I love you too, B."
