Blind Date
"Hey Brendon." Brendon turned to see his co-worker, Ian, walking up to him. He sighed softly and answered back.
"Ya?" He was tired and just ready to clock out already.
"Got another table for you in the corner." Brendon felt his body slump forward in exhaustion. He'd already been working over ten hours.
"Can't you get one of the other waiters to do it? Please, Ian. I have fifteen minutes before I can leave." Ian shrugged in response.
"You know I can't do that man. Wentz will have our asses if he finds out I didn't give you a table while you were still clocked in." Brendon grabbed his apron and slowly tied it around his waist.
"Which table is it?" He felt sluggish in his movement.
"Corner. Guy in a red v-neck and black pants." Brendon nodded and made his way out into the dinning area. He kept a bright smile on his face as he approached the table. The man looked nervous, fidgeting with his menu and bouncing his knee rapidly.
"Hello. My name is Brendon and I'll be your server tonight. Can I start you off with anything to drink?" The man looked up with wide honey eyes.
"Oh, uh." He stared back down at his menu. "Um, actually I'm waiting for someone. Is it okay if I wait till he shows up?" He had guilt written all over his light pink face.
"That's no problem." The man let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank you. Sorry, I'm just nervous about this date. I haven't dated since I left my abusive ex a while ago." The man tensed up and his face turned a bright shade of red. "I-I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. I.. Oh my god. I'm so sorry. I'm just really nervous."
"It's okay," Brendon spoke softly and placed a hand on the man's shoulder to calm him. "That might be in your past now, but it's completely okay for you to feel this nervous." The man nodded and took a deep breath.
"Thanks," he said shyly. Brendon took his hand off him and nodded. "My name's Ryan by the way." Brendon smiled at the man.
"I'm Brendon." His smile dropped and he shook his head. A nervous smile replaced his old one. "But I already said that when I came to the table." Ryan gave a small chuckle and more confident smile that gave Brendon small butterflies.
"It's nice to meet you Brendon."
"Like wise." Brendon smiled down at Ryan, stopping his want to run his fingers through Ryan's hair to see if it was as soft as it looked. He smile faltered for a second when he realized how long he'd been standing there without saying anything. "So, I'll come back to get your drink order later."
"Thank you." Brendon nodded and went back to the kitchen. He leaned back against the wall, his exhaustion suddenly hitting him again. He sighed and closed his eyes.
"So what'd you think?" Brendon looked to see Ian grinning at him.
"What are you talking about?" Ian jerked his head to the door.
"You last table. Thought I'd make your last table worth it." Brendon eyes widened.
"Were you trying to set me up with some random customer?" Ian gave a look of disbelief.
"Excuse me, sir. I am your best work friend. Do you think I'd try to set you up with a random customer because I thought he was cute for you and you two would be adorable together?"
"Yes, yes I do think so. You tried setting me up with some chick with big boobs before you knew I was gay." Ian smiled and looked up thinking of the memory.
"Yeah but like this one is actually on your team." Brendon rolled his eyes.
"He's on a date right now." He watched Ian open the kitchen door and peeked his head out. He looked back at Brendon with a wide smile.
"It looks like he's alone." Brendon pushed Ian out of the way and looked out. Ryan looked like the definition of anxiety. He kept looked around at any guy who would walk in and was picking at the plastic from the menu.
"You don't think that he was stood up do you?" Brendon lookd at Ian. "He doesn't deserve to be stood up by some asshole." He looked up at the clock and saw almost ten minutes had passed. Five more minutes then he could leave.
"'Some asshole' huh? Mr. Urie if I'm not mistaken, it sounds like you're already getting involved with this random guy."
"Hs nm iz Ryn," Brendon mumbled.
"What?" Brendon sighed and closed his eyes.
"His name is Ryan." Ian shoved him playfully.
"You know his name?"
"He told me. He really nervous about this date and his kept talking. And he... yeah," Brendon shrugged with a small smile on his face.
"You're blushing!"
"What? No I'm not." Brendon hand went up to his cheek, feeling the heat.
"You totally like this dude."
"Shut up. I-I-I," Brendon stutter.
"Have to go check on your cutie?" Brendon rolled his eyes and pushed his way out the door. He began feeling nervous as he approach the anxious man.
"Hey Ryan." The man looked toward his waiter and smiled.
"Hey." He gave Brendon the best smile he could managed with his nerves. Brendon looked over at the empty seat across from his customer.
"Still hasn't showed up?" Ryan looked across from him and turned back. He shook his head gently. "I can bring you a drink?"
"Um..."
"I can wait longer if you'd like."
"No, no. I uh. Can I have just a glass of water please?"
"Sure thing. I'll be right back." He gave Ryan a smile before going back to the kitchen. He went to the cooler and pulled out a bottle of water and a glass.
"So you're giving him the good water?" Brendon rolled his eyes.
"I always give my customers the 'good' water."
"Bull I saw you give that chick last week tap."
"Because she was a total bitch and told her friend that because of the way I walk that I'm a fag."
"But you are."
"Not because of the way I walk and she gave me so much attitude." Ian chuckle softly beside him as Brendon poured the glass.
"Beside, I wanna make Ryan as comfy as possible. It's my last table of the night, might as well give my best service."
"Mmhm. You do that." Brendon grabbed a small basket of freshly made mozzarella sticks and headed toward the door. Ian gave him a smirk.
"I'm just being nice."
"Keep telling yourself that." Brendon rolled his eyes as he walked across the dining area. Ryan was fiddling with a fork before looking up to see Brendon.
"I got your water and some mozzarella sticks while you wait."
"I didn't order the mozzarella sticks."
"On the house." Ryan looked down as his cheeks heated up.
"Thank you, Brendon," he mumbled softly.
"Would you like anything else?" Ryan looked toward the entrance of the door then down at the table shaking his head.
"I'm good. Thank you." Brendon nodded and walked away. He was trying to hide the smile he got from the small conversation as he went back to the kitchen.
"Get his number yet?" Brendon's smile fell as he frowned at Ian.
"Do you ever work?" Ian smiles and shrug.
"Do you even not work when you're doing cupid's job?" Brendon rolled his eyes. "You gonna head out now?" Brendon looked up at the clock. It was fifteen passed the time his shift ended.
"I still have that last table."
"I'll take care of it."
"I don't know."
"I know you wanna talk to lover boy out there, but you should clock out. You know how Pete is with people going over time." Brendon sighed.
"Fine. Just... just make sure Ryan's alright and don't charge him for the mozzarella sticks."
"No matter problem. I got you." Brendon nodded and hesitantly took his apron.
He grabbed his coat and watch Ian go into the dining area. Then, he went over to the chef and leaned over the counter.
"Hey Zack." The man looked over at Brendon with a big smile.
"Hey B. Heading out?" Brendon nodded.
"Want your usual?" Brendon nodded again more excitedly. Zack chuckled a little as he went to the cooler and came back with a to-go box.
"And you made it right?" Zack nodded.
"Like I'd trust anyone else making your cake to your satisfaction."
"Thanks Zack. You're the best." He took the container and headed to the doors leading to the dining room. When he was walking passed some tables, he looked over to see Ian talking to Ryan.
He frowned when he saw Ryan shaking his head in defeat and stood up. Ian looked like he trying to tell him something, but Ryan kept shaking his head. He had on a sad smile as he put on his jacket.
He went to the cash register the waiters used to clock himself out. He kept peeking up to see Ryan walking out and Ian coming up to him.
"What happened?"
"He was upset that his date didn't show up and got tired of waiting." Brendon frowned.
"He doesn't deserve that."
"It happens. Nothing you can do about it." Brendon mumbled softly to himself. "Don't get upset. What're the odds that you're gonna see him again anyways?" Brendon continued to frown.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow, Bren." Brendon walked out and scanned the parking lot. He felt his spirit sink when he didn't see his last customer.
He shook his head and walked toward his car. He stopped when he heard sniffling. He looked between the lines of cars as he walked until he saw a man sitting on the ground leaning against a car.
"Ryan?" The man quickly wiped away his tears and scrambling onto his feet.
"H-hey Brendon." He kept his head low and had his arms wrapped around himself.
"Why were you sitting on the floor?"
"Oh, um." His hand came up to scratch his head nervously. "I might've locked myself out of my car and have to wait for my roommate to come pick me up." Brendon looked down at his hands as he fidgeted with his box.
"You wanna wait in my car?" Ryan's head snapped up.
"N-no. It's okay. I couldn't ask you to do that. You don't even know me."
"I know you're a sweet guy who didn't deserve to be stood up by some jackass." Ryan wiped his cheek and kept his head low. "I don't mind. You deserve to have something go decent for you tonight." Ryan shook his head and scoffed.
"God I'm pathetic."
"No you're not. At least I don't think so."
"You don't know me," Ryan repeated softly.
"No." Brendon began shifting nervously from side to side. "But.. I wouldn't mind getting to know you." Ryan peeked up at Brendon who gave a nervous smile. Brendon felt his heart pounding under the man's honey eyes.
"I have cake." Brendon raised the box to show Ryan. Ryan laughed softly before making a serious face.
"Depends. What kind of cake?"
"The chocolate tower made from chef Hall himself." Ryan smiled.
"I heard that was a piece of heaven on earth."
"One taste can give you eternal happiness." Ryan giggled softly causing Brendon to smile. Ryan bit his lip softly to contain his giggles. "Is that a yes?"
"After being stood up and locked out of my car, why wouldn't I say yes to my cute waiter who'stajen care of me all night." Ryan smiled shyly. Brendon stood beside Ryan and held his arm out for the other man. Ryan wrapped his arm around Brendon's with a wide smile on his face.
Brendon felt Ryan's hand slide into his own. He laced their fingers together and felt himself blush when Ryan leaned against him as they walked.
"Thank you, Brendon." Brendon looked at Ryan with a small smile. He squeezed Ryan's hand reassuringly. He may have just met the man tonight, but he was gonna make sure to treat him like he deserved.
