Part 9 - Home Again
Driving back home wasn't exactly a joy ride for Henry. He has this feeling in the pit of his stomach that's ready to explode. His chest felt burning and his stomach felt like twisting in a process making Henry felt like this isn't a good idea for him to go back. Maybe they should stay at the hospital, he thought. But again, he's the one that complaining to Alex the whole time he was there.
Alex saw Henry is fidgeting in his seat at the back of the SUV. Henry sat besides Alex in the car and yet he felt like Henry thought is probably somewhere else in this universe. He knew Henry is nervous to be back to their brownstone house or should he called it the scene of the crime. He wanted to bring him back to his parents house but again, Henry denied that. He felt like he need to go home.
He took Henry hands in his and brought it to his lips and kissed his white knuckles. Poor Henry has been clenching his hand since the drive out of the hospital Alex worried he would broke his finger. Alex could feel Henry relaxed upon his kisses when he took a breath and exhaled. "I'm right here, okay." Henry nodded feeling the tears coming. He leaned against the headrest as he let his hand gripped Alex hard.
The car stopped by the entrance of their house and Henry couldn't find a courage to walk out the door yet. The driver had pulled the door open for them and Henry held his position. He flinched when Alex stroked his finger on his palm and his eyes darted towards him, "I can't." He said almost as whispers. "We can always divert to either mum's house or a hotel, you picked." Alex suggested and Henry still in his seat juggling his mind on whether to stay or to run. "I have to face reality. This is our home, no matter what." He said as he closed his eyes and nodded. Alex went out first before holding out his hand for Henry and he grabbed them as he exit the car. "I got you." Alex said.
He took Henry hands in his and walked together into the entrance. Unlocking the key to the front door and walked in first with Henry followed suit.
"SURPRISE!" The moment Henry stepped in to their home he heard them screamed and he saw his whole family's there. His mum, Bea and surprisingly Phillip is there with a smile on his face. He even saw the decoration on the ceiling with balloons everywhere and a banner welcoming him home that had red and gold in them. He was too stunned to speak as he palmed his hand over his chest and stood silently staring at them. "Uhh.." He mumbles and he could see June smacked Pez's shoulder earning him a growl. Alex still by his side holding his shoulder.
"I told you we shouldn't surprised someone who just came back from heart surgery!" She remarks and Henry tried to hold his laughter in. "Henry, are you okay? Are you feeling pain?" Ellen asked concerned as she stood closer to him. "I think it's a bad idea getting him home this fast don't you think, he still looks pale to me. Are you feeling alright sweetie?" Catherine came forward and hold Henry's face in her hand.
"Uhh, I'm just kidding, I'm fine." He said with the biggest smile on his face and Catherine smacked him on his arm. "Ow.." He said, "Serves you right! How can you scare me like that." She said and they all laughed. Henry opened his arm for his mum and they hugged for the first time in weeks. He winced upon the touch causing his mother to pull back but he pull her back to his chest.
Bea came behind her followed by Phillip and they hugged him together in one big family hug. "Ohh my dear children, I'm so happy right now." Catherine said and Henry smiled. Alex gave Henry some space for his family so they could reconnect and squeezed Henry's shoulder. "I'll get the bags." He said and Henry nodded mouthing thanks to him which he smiled, leaning in to kiss his cheek.
"Come in here brother." Pez said opening his arm wide to give Henry the biggest hug he could. Truthfully Pez remember the first time he saw Henry after he's awake at the hospital minus their video calls, Henry swore Pez was gonna cry seeing him but he denied them. He still remember the scared look on his face when he saw Henry, it was the same as Alex has, fear of even touching him not knowing where it would hurt. Before Alex, Pez was the closest thing he has for a friend and family. He knew how he felt must be devastating to him.
"You a'ight mate?" He asked seeing Henry wobbled in his stand and Henry sighed. "Just tired from all the standing." He said before Pez helped him towards their couch. He never had so many companies in his house like this in three years he lived here. Alex walked in carrying Henry's bag in his hand and proceed to carry them upstairs. Henry eyed around the living room, leaning his head around with his eyes linger looking for something.
Not a moment later a certain four legged Beagle literally jumped over Bea that was sitting next to her and then jumped on his lap. "Hey buddy. Hi, I know.. I know. I'm so sorry. I miss you too." David jumped and wagged his tail side by side on Henry's lap as he keep kissing him and his tongue kept licking Henry's face. They all smiled seeing the beautiful reunion with his dog laughing at David constantly jumping on Henry's lap wanting him to hug him closer. Even when he was at the hospital, he kept asking Alex about David. Alex had Pez looking after David cause he can't be at home since Henry at the hospital. David finally settles in Henry's lap not leaving there anytime soon.
The only Alex was at home was either to shower or when he need to change cause he spend most of his time at the hospital anyway. He feels bad leaving David with Pez but he is better person to take care of him. There was a moment, when Alex saw David after he came back from the hospital, he cried for hours. He can't get up or do anything in his life and he was completely lost without him. "Babe, medicine time." Alex said coming down from upstairs bedroom holding a small paper bag of Henry's medicine in his hand. He turned his head around seeing Alex went to the kitchen after he passed the paper bag to June.
She peeled the bag open and had all the medication on her palm probably four or five and confused which one should Henry take first. "Which one?" She asked, Alex came back into the living room with a glass of water in his hand. He leaned from behind the couch handing Henry the glass and grabbed the bag from June's hand. He turned the bottles and read them one by one before finding one and popped it open. He unscrewed the cap off and put out one pill out and hand them to Henry.
Ellen and Catherine sat right across from them watching how Alex taking care of Henry and there is nothing would bring happiness to their heart. A week ago Alex was a wrecked and Henry is neither living or dead. None of them would expect him coming out of it. Right here, right now, everything changes and they feel like nothing would ever separate them. Ellen did what any mother did and snapped a photo of them on the couch. Henry in between June and Bea on both of his side with Alex behind him leaning against the couch kissing him on his temple as he sip the water.
"Oooh, sent me the photo." Catherine said next to her and she smiled. They had an amazing time together in their home eating food that Oscar cooked. Catherine maybe a princess but she is a rebel in heart and she is not scared in trying new things in life. Which is why when Ellen suggested for her to come to their Austin lake house, she was thrilled and can't stop talking about it. Bea and Phillip were as happy but unfortunately for Phillip he promised Martha he would be back tonight so he left early to head to the airport.
Henry sees him out and Alex didn't want to intrude, he only followed until the front door saying goodbye and thanks with promise of bringing Henry back to London for a visit. He then left Henry to talk privately with Phillip outside of their home. He didn't want to eavesdrop but the conversation look intense and he worried Henry was hurt but when he saw how Phillip wiped his tears away and gave Henry a hug reassuring him, he stopped and let those brothers have their moment.
Henry walked back inside the house after sending Ellen and Oscar off leaving only their friends and sisters around. He walked back inside with Alex still outside when something caught his eyes on the floor. He saw a drop of spilled red wine on the floor and the image of that night came rushing inside of his head.
He stopped middle of the foyer with his body froze to the ground. His eyes darted towards the floor and then towards the staircase. The guy's face, when he hit Henry in his head. The dark hole of the steel gun he aimed at his head. The ascend towards the room, how the guy pushed Henry on the stairs made him felt the overcoming fear wrapped around his heart.
"Henry, we think you should-" June spoke but only then she noticed Henry froze in his stand with his eyes focused on the red wine on the floor. His eyes are tearing with drops of tears begging to falls and his hand are shaking on his side. "Alex!" June called. Alex is still outside fixing the gate close when he heard June screamed his name. He literally sprinted inside finding Henry sitting by the foyer - standing like a statute. He didn't utter any word and didn't even make any attempt to move.
"Babe." He cupped Henry's cheek in his palm and Henry immediately shocked upon contact. He gasped before his eyes turned sharply from the ground towards Alex's brown eyes. "You okay?" He asked and Henry sighed taking his breath deeply like he forgets to breath earlier. "What is it?" He asked but Henry went for his hug instead. He still didn't say anything and Alex could feel him shaking as he hugged him. He rubbed soft circles on his back hushing him to calm down and he did.
"I'm sorry, it's too much." Henry said after a while Alex hugged him in comfort. "It's okay but are you sure you're okay to stay here tonight?" Nora asked as they all saw how terrified he is over some splash of red wine resembling blood imagined what his bedroom would do to him.
Henry didn't reply nor did he reacted to what Nora just said, just staring blankly over the space between them. "Hen, maybe we should stay at the hotel or something." Alex suggested, he can't see Henry like this idea. "No. That won't be necessary. I'm fine." He said before he stood up and put on the fakest smile. None of them said anything, scared it would trigger Henry in some way. "We should go." Pez said and they all nodded.
"Bea you can stay here for tonight before you're flying back tomorrow. The guest room is yours if you want." Alex suggested and Bea smiled rubbing her lips together. "Actually I already make plans with Nora and June to stay at their place. You know, girls night?" She claimed and Henry smirked. "You too?" He asked and she smiled before smacking Henry on his shoulder.
"Stop, it's nothing. I would prefer with the girls than empty guest room. You know, better company." She said winking at them both. Alex nodded, "Okay, take care of her ladies. Don't embarrassed me!" Alex threatened and they both made fingers crossed together giggling. "Alright ladies lets bounced." Pez called as they took their leave out from Henry and Alex home. Henry went to sit on the couch in the living room letting Alex bid them goodnight.
"Alex," Bea starts after they went out from the gate. "You know that he lied right?" Bea asked and Alex smiled. "Nothing that man can hide from me." He replied but the look on Bea face tells him that there is something more. "Then you know what you have to do." She asked and it made Alex eyebrow's furrowed. "What do you mean?" He asked.
"Christ Alex, he is not fine! He is scared. He is terrified and I am terrified that he is. That's how it happened, right after dad died." She yells at him and Alex could see Pez starts moving closer to her. "She's right. It started well first. The staring into blank spaces, then not eating. Then not sleeping before insanity came over him and he starts talking death. Constant panic attack in the middle of the night. It will be too devastating for someone especially someone who cares for him as much as you do." Pez explained and Alex nodded in understanding.
"I will keep an eye for him. I let you know if I needed any help." He said and Bea hugged him goodbye not before she whispered in his ear. "Take care of my brother. He is too precious for this world." Bea said and Alex nodded.
After they all gone in Pez's car, Alex closed the gate and went inside. He locked the door and activating the alarm which reminds him that he need to teach Henry this soon. He was too paranoid to live here that he put camera literally in ever corner of his house. He even installed the doorbell camera so if anyone rang the bell, Henry won't be so paranoid to answer the door. He could just sees it from his phone. Why didn't he think of that before when they move in, all of this would be different by now.
As he walked inside he saw Henry already falling asleep on the couch with David between his legs so he smiled. He took a blanket from the guest room and a pillow for him and Henry. Later he placed the blanket on Henry after he removed David from his legs but he soon climbed back up and sat at the same spot only that it was on top of the blanket. He lifted Henry's head and placed the pillow underneath him not wanting him to wake up with a neck pain.
He then placed the pillow next to Henry on the floor before covered his whole body with the blanket. Henry had his hand out from the blanket and Alex smiled as he grabbed the hand in his finding Henry's finger tangled with his. Just like most night they slept together at the hospital only this time, they are home.
Henry jolted from his sleep middle of night after hearing something crashed somewhere in the house. He was clueless at first but when he saw him lying on the couch in living room with a blanket on top of him and David by his legs. His heart settles but soon finds comfort seeing his fiancé sleeping next to him on the ground. He smiled and wished Alex would have some comfort rather sleeping on the hard floor.
He walked towards their kitchen and turned on the stove light before he went to the fridge to grab some water. When he open the fridge door, he found lots of food for both of them to survive at least for the next three days. God bless Oscar and his expertise in cooking the most delicious food Henry ever tasted. He could never find any Mexican restaurant in London that can make brisket like Oscar did. The guy had set the bar too high, Henry thought he might never coming back down from it.
He was startled again by the same sound he heard before he woke up. The crash sound. It sounded like door banging each other or perhaps maybe someone in the house, Henry thought. His paranoia is taking over his brain as he tried to be brave. He walked closely towards the staircase leaving his hand on the banister as he find all the strength he could to climb the stairs.
He took him all the courage he need for now to lift himself up the stairs. Not too mentioned that after the heart surgery, his heart is still practically healing and climbing all these stairs made him realized he was not supposed to yet. He stopped in the middle of the staircase after he heard the same sound again and when he looked at their living room, Alex still sound asleep. He must be exhausted.
He exhaled as he continued climbing the stairs walking along the hallway finding his study room first. It was as just as he left them only this time, it was messier. The papers all over the table he bet was Alex and he knew Alex won't have time cleaning up. He didn't go in and walked past it eventually.
As he stood at the front door of his bedroom, he noticed the door has been changed. His old door is white with a gold door handle and the wood is actually painted white so they could see the lines of the old wood on it. This one is plain white with black door handle with black framed. He turned the handle and pushed the door open. A sudden gush of wind blew into his eyes as he rubbed them with his finger.
He stepped inside finding their balcony window was actually open and the door is banging open against the wall - which explains the banging sound he heard. He wanted to move further but his foot is like nailed to the ground when he saw the last thing he was supposed to see or even remember.
The image of him, lying on the floor covered with blood, the guy dressed in all black carrying their duffel bag with all the stolen items trying to climb out from the balcony. The guy's face. His eyes. Everything about him that night making Henry regret coming in here all alone. Alex is downstairs, he can't move, he can't speak and he can't breathe.
He could feel his chest tightened as flashes of images coming through his mind and he wished he wasn't here. He wished he was downstairs in Alex's arm. The sound of bullet goes off from the gun banged inside his head and he could feel almost as if he was being shot. He gripped his stomach in pain after he heard them and he shut his eyes tight not wanting to open them. He is afraid that if he does, he would see the guy. He is terrified that if he did, he might not survive again this time. "Al-Alex." He whispered trembling in fear before darkness welcome him.
Alex was woken up by sudden licked by David and he pushed his face away. "No, David, leave. Go." He instructs but David still licked his face and pressed on his chest which made him sat up only to find Henry was not on the couch next to him. "Henry?" He called and he couldn't see any person in the living room nor the kitchen right now that resembles Henry. He went to the door finding it still locked and his last guess was upstairs so he climbed the stairs in hurry skipping a few steps with his long legs.
"Henry?" He called inside the study room but it was no one and he could see their bedroom door is open and he ran as fast as he could. "Hen? Babe, you're in there?" He walked further opening his door that was half open and found Henry on the floor of their bedroom. The same image runs through his mind when he found Henry that night made him screamed for Henry.
"HENRY!" He lifted Henry from the floor and immediately went to check on his pulse. He placed two fingers on the side of his neck and sighed but took out his phone from his pocket and called 9-1-1.
It took them around ten minutes to arrive and Alex already carried Henry over their well made bed. He went down opening the door for them before he briefed them Henry's history. "What happened sir?" The girl asked as she stepped in and in her hand she carried the usual EMT blue bag that contain all the things she need for any cases.
"It's my fiancé, he fainted in the bedroom. He just got out of the hospital today after a heart surgery" Alex guided them and brought the EMT's towards their bedroom and found Henry on the bed still unconscious. She went and check on his vitals placing the cuff around Henry's arm and starts listening to Henry's heart with a stethoscope. Alex stand by the other side of the bed - his usual side waiting patiently for Henry to wake up. Henry is okay, he told himself.
The girl later then brought some white bottle in her palm, small as her hands and run underneath Henry's nose and he shook awake. "Oh thank god!" Alex prayed and climbed on the bed to be next to Henry. Henry immediately hugged Alex in fear not aware of what happened.
"What the hell are you doing up here? Why didn't you wake me up?" Alex told him as he rubbed his back hushing him soothe words. "I-I hear noises." Henry said still shaking in Alex's grip. "He's fine. Just a little bit low blood pressure but otherwise he is fine. If you are worried we can have him transported to the hospital to get further check." She suggested and Alex nodded. "Yeah sounds like a good idea." He said but Henry didn't. He shook his head pulling away from Alex's hugs and pleaded him not to take him to the hospital.
"Please, please. I don't want to go back." Henry pleads and Alex sighed. Alex shifts his gaze towards the EMT girl and shook his head. "Can you grab some water for me. There's a glass in the bathroom." Alex instructs feeling bad that he asked the girl to help him do so but he had no choice because Henry is latching on to him like a baby.
She brought the glass with full filled water and handed to Alex. "Babe, drink this." Alex said and bring the cup closer to Henry's lips. His hand trembles and shakes upon the touch making Alex holding it instead and he took a gulp like he hasn't drink in days. He pushed the cup away and Alex placed them in the nightstand.
"Everything good?" A man voice appeared shaking Henry in process as he hugged his knees. Alex saw the man that entered his bedroom and his face lit like a kid in candy shop. "Something familiar with this room." He said as he let his hands run through his mustache. The girl brief him that they are trying to get Henry to the hospital but was rather to shook up to follow her instruction which then made him turn his gaze towards the couple on the bed.
"Oh my days. As I lived and breathe." He said with a widest smile on his face. Alex literally jumped from the bed leaving confused Henry on the bed and hugged the guy like some sort of reunion. "Easy boy, easy." He said patting Alex's back as he laughs. Alex pulled him away from his hugs to look into his face. "I didn't get to say thank you. You're the reason he still breathing right now." Alex said with tears coming down his face. The guy cupped his face with a smile and let his gaze turned to frightened Henry on the bed.
"Is that His Royal Highness Prince Henry?" He asked and Alex nodded. Henry looked at both of them in confused. The girl then told him that she waited in the ambulance for him. The guy took his cap off and walked towards Henry on the bed, letting his body slides on the side. "You Royal Highness." The guy started but Henry interrupts. "Just Henry." He mutters as he let his lips rested on his knees.
"I'm Joel. Joel Withorn. I'm the paramedics that saved your life that night." He said and Henry immediately raised his head towards the guy. "You're the one?" He asked and tears starts to drop on his face. "You know back then, when a person hearts stop beating, you only got four to six minutes to bring it back." He began and Henry stares at his face. Alex took a seat next to Henry on the bed hugging him from the side knowing he needed it.
"For a person to have cardiac arrested outside of hospital had ten percent chances to survive. But for a person to have a two gunshot wound with no beating heart like you had, probably one percent." Joel said and Henry keep his gaze at the guy waiting patiently for him to continue. "You my boy, are that one percent. One of the lucky bastard who survived this death call so to speak." He states, "I don't feel lucky." Henry mentioned still gripping Alex by his arm around his shoulder and neck.
"You're not, we do. Cause at that time, if you didn't survived the odds, you won't be able to feel it anyway. We do. He will." Joel pointed at Alex and Henry simultaneously turned his gaze towards Alex and he could see him tearing up. "Second chance is not easily given, you are stronger than that. Live. Life is too precious to be dwelling in the past. Breathe and let it heal you." Joel continued and Henry nodded. "Thank you for saving me that night." He said and Joel nodded patting his legs before he stood and placed his cap back.
"I must be going. More calls, more lives to save." He said with a smile. Alex walked him out from their home and locked the door before went back to his room finding Henry sat up on the bed with a blank stare. "Babe?" He called as he climbed the bed next to Henry. Henry removed his gaze towards him and smiled. His eyes are bloodshot and his nose are blotched red from crying.
"C'mere." He said holding out his arm and they lay on the bed with Henry on his chest. Their hand intertwined together as Henry counted the beating of Alex's heart. Steady and calm.
"I know it's hard and overwhelming for you. I am here whenever you need me, always." He whispered and Henry raised his head facing his face. Henry let his hand cupped Alex's neck and he leaned to kiss Henry on his forehead and later his lips. "Shut your mind for tonight and remember me, only me." Alex whispered as Henry nuzzled into Alex neck and eventually fell asleep.
