Chapter 8: The Marksman
[Ghost's POV, A Few Days After the Breach]
Dark: "Ghost, come on. You can't just lay in bed all day. Let's go and do something."
I ignored him. I hadn't spoken to either of my teammates since the breach. They forced me to leave (C/N) behind. I heard Dark sigh and he sat down on the side of my bed.
Dark: "Ghost... we all wanted to go get him... we miss him, he was our brother... we're family... but we couldn't risk the lives of all those people. (C/N) would understand."
I still ignored him. Smoke walked in and sat on the other side of my bed.
Smoke: "Things aren't the same without him. Even Ironwood was devastated, but we all know the risk of being what we are. Please, just come to classes. We won't force you to work, but you need to try."
I shook my head slowly. (C/N) wasn't just a brother to me, he was my best friend. It's true, the team and I miss our leader. We aren't the same, we don't work as well, without (C/N) looking after us we can barely fight a group. Yang has tried to cheer me up, but it just doesn't work, I haven't really spent anytime with her, I can't seem to find the motivation. Neo seemed to disappear after (C/N) was gone too, its effecting everyone, if only he was still here. I slowly looked over to (C/N)'s bed where all his guns and equipment still laid in the places where he left them, no one had the heart to move them or anything. Suddenly someone's scroll went off, Dark looked at his scroll and put it to his ear.
Dark: "Yes sir?"
He paused.
Dark: "Sir... I really don't think-"
He was cut off.
Dark: "Right sir. We'll head there right now. ALL of us."
He said looking down at me. I sighed.
Dark: "Ironwood wants us down at the helipad. Come on."
I reluctantly got up and followed them out the door.
[Time Skip, to the Helipad]
We approached the helipad and almost instantly a girl in a black cloak, having long black hair and one blue and one green eye, her green eye having a cross hair in it, ran up to us with an excited look on her face.
???: "Oh my god it's Team Shadow! You guys are always the top of the leaderboards at Atlas!"
We looked at each other then noticed Ironwood walking up from the bullhead behind her.
Dark: "Sir, is this our new leader?"
My head snapped to Dark then to Ironwood.
Me: "What?!"
Ironwood: "Yes. This is DreadShot, she's currently the top sharp shooter in Atlas. She's more then qualified."
I felt my blood boil.
Me: "You're kidding me, right?! You can't expect us to just have a new-"
Smoke: "Ghost, stand down."
I clenched my teeth.
Ironwood: "I understand that you aren't going to just accept her instantly, but you can't go on without a leader, this is what's best for you three."
DreadShot: "Please, just give me a chance."
I sighed.
Me; "Fine. Whatever."
[Time Skip, DreadShot's POV, Two Weeks After the Breach]
I aimed down my sight and fired an electric bolt hitting Ruby's scythe before it made contact with Smoke's side. Smoke then spun and kicked her side tossing her to the ground.
Smoke: "Sorry dear!"
I turned to Ghost who was desperately dodging Yang's punches.
Ghost: "Calm down! It's just a bet!"
Yang; "Oh I'm gonna win this bet, and I already know what I'm gonna make you do."
Yang gave Ghost an evil smirk, making him shiver. I aimed down my sight and waited a moment, then fired knocking her fist back as she tried to throw another punch. Dark then moved forward and knocked Yang back with the hilt of his Flamberge. He then quickly turned and blocked Weiss' rapier. I then shot her rapier out of her hand. I quickly rolled forward dodging Blake's sword from behind me. I turned around and tried to aim but she was already inside my range, so I kept dodging her attacks. As I jumped backwards from one of her attacks Smoke ran forward and began blocking and dodging her strikes. I fired a shot at her leg, making her lose balance, Smoke then grabbed onto her arm and flipped her onto the ground, thus ending the match. After helping everyone up we chatted and started walking out of the training room.
Ruby: "You guys are starting to work really well together!"
Dark: "We have grown a bit closer, it just took sometime to get used to a new leader."
He said while holding Weiss' hand.
Ghost: "And while I don't think she'll ever fully replace (C/N), I have to admit she's pretty good, plus she's a good cook, considering we always either eat out or eat something really easy to make."
He then turned his attention to Yang.
Me: "I still can't believe I get to lead Team Shadow! I modeled my entire way of fighting and strategy after (C/N)'s."
Smoke: "You really admired him, huh?"
Me; "Of course! He holds the record for the longest distance kill! No matter what I can't even get near that, even when I use my semblance."
Weiss: "What is your semblance again?"
Me: "I call it 'All Seeing Eye'. I'm able to see incredibly far, along with being able to see through certain materials."
We kept walking for awhile.
Ghost: "Hey, I just remembered. You should probably go pick up a side arm, it'll help in close quarters for you."
I thought for a moment.
Me: "I guess your right. I'll meet you guys back at the dorm."
I ran off towards the air ships.
[Time Skip, Shooting Range]
I held the Glock 34 in my hand and weighed it. I then looked down the shooting range. I had gone to one in town, instead of the one at the school since I was already out. I aimed down range and was about to fire when I heard another shot go off, and then another, and another. It was definitely a semi-auto rifle but whoever was shooting was firing it in rapid succession barely even giving time to adjust their aim. I leanded back to check the spot next to me and saw someone in a (Favorite Color) cloak firing a Cheytac M-200 Intervention.
Me: 'They're just wasting ammo, there's no way they actually hit something.'
I looked over at they're target to see a ring made of bullet holes around the bullseye. My mouth opened slightly in amazement. I looked over into the other shooting spot and smiled.
Me: "That was amazing! How'd you do that?!"
They slowly turned to me, revealing they wore a smiling mask where the mouth was stitched shut. The eyeholes were covered with some kind of material which didn't show their eyes. They didn't speak at first, they just looked at me, until....
???: "A lot of practice."
The voice was male. He then started reloading his rifle. Once he was done he turned back to me.
???: "Want to have a bit of a contest?"
Me: "Sure! But I'll have you know, I'm pretty good myself."
???: "Well I'd hope so..."
Me: 'What is that supposed to mean?'
He pressed a button on the wall beside him, there's one on each stall.
???: "Let's go with the holographic targets, whoever hits the most wins."
Me: "Right!"
He took off his cloak revealing stealth gear with dozens of ammo clips in holsters.
???: "You can ask the owner for ammo, it's not that expensive."
Me: "Oh it's fine! My rifle runs on energy, it never runs out, it only overheats."
???: "Hmm... interesting."
I pulled my rifle off my back(image above) and got into position. The walls closed off a section for each stall and gave a holographic count down.
[Time Skip, (Because I'm lazy) after timer runs out]
I smiled up at my score, 109 hits.
Me: 'With normal ammo there's no way he hit more then me.'
I looked over into his stall and froze. My mouth dropped open as I saw his score, 234.
Me: "H-How... did you...?"
???: "Normal ammo pierces, energy, not so much."
Me: "But the targets moved so fast and only passed each other for maybe a second! How could you possibly line up those shots, and reload, and cock your next bullet!? You'd have to have a supercomputer for a brain, to calculate the trajectory, bullet drop, keep track of the ammo you have left, then there's the reaction time that you'd have to have to accomplish all that in just seconds."
???: "Trust me, with as long as I've been shooting, this is easy for me. So what was your score?"
I looked down in shame then mumbled.
Me: "109."
He chuckled under his mask.
???: "Try to train more. I'm sure you'll come across an enemy who wants a challenge one day."
He strapped the clips he used back onto his gear and slung his rifle over his shoulder, then started walking towards the door.
Me: "Wait! What's your name?"
He thought for a moment.
Marksman: "Just call me Marksman. If you ever even see me again."
He then walked out the door. For a few moments I just stared at the door, my heart was racing. Then a smile grew on my face.
Me: "He's so cool..."
