Ruby x Dying! Male! Reader
[Ruby's POV]
Yang: "Ruby are you heading to the hospital today?"
Me: "Yeah. I was actually just about to head there."
Yang: "Tell him I said hi."
Me: "Okay!"
I walked out of the dorm room and towards the airdock. I was on my way to see (Y/N), my boyfriend. He's been sick for awhile now and hasn't left the hospital in two months. I try to visit him everyday but sometimes I just get too busy and wind up missing the visiting hours. I always feel bad when I don't visit him, he must get so lonely.

I walked through the doors of the hospital and up to the receptionist. He had long dark brown hair, one blue eye and one hazel eye. His hair was tied back into a ponytail.
Cody: "Hey Ruby, visiting (Y/N)?"
Me: "Yup!"
Cody: "Go ahead up."
Me: "Thanks!"
I walked over to the elevator and ascended the building. Once I got to the third floor I walked out and went straight for (Y/N) room. I knew the way by heart. As i got to the door I knocked.
Doctor: "Come in."
I opened the door to see (Y/N)'s doctor standing by his bed. The doctor had a grim look on his face, while (Y/N)'s showed frustration.
Doctor: "Would you like me to tell her?"
(Y/N): "No, I will. Could you leave for a bit?"
The doctor nodded and walked out of the room, shutting the door behind him.
Me: "What's going on? Tell me what?"
(Y/N) smiled at me and patted the side of his bed, telling me to sit. I walked over and sat on the side of his bed.
(Y/N): "Alright...they found out what's wrong with me."
Me: "Really? What is it?"
(Y/N): "It's something called Fatal Familial Insomnia."
Me: "So that's the reason you can't sleep? Wait... Fatal...?"
(Y/N): "Yeah... basically there's a problem in my brain that makes it unable to shut down."
Me: "B-But they can cure it, right?"
(Y/N): "No. There's no cure. Basically... as the disease grows it'll deprive me of sleep. The doctor said the average lifespan from developing symptoms is 18 months, which means I have 16 months left."
[(Y/N)'s POV]
I looked at Ruby as tears welled up in her eyes. She suddenly tackled me into a hug and started sobbing. I rubbed her back as I weakly hugged her back. I haven't slept for weeks. Before I was at least able to get 3 to 4 hours, but now not even sleeping meds help. I came to terms with it, that I'd die. But I couldn't stand the thought to leave Ruby alone.
Ruby: "I-I.. D-Don't.. want... t-to... lose you!"
She managed to say between her sobs and incoherent pleading.
Me: "Ruby... Darling... it's okay."
Ruby: "No it's not! It's not fair!"
She sat up and looked me in the eye.
Ruby: "Its not okay! Nothing about this is okay! I'm losing you! I love you... I can't let this happen..."
Me: "Ruby... there's nothing they can do. But they said they'd let me leave the hospital for a while, and let me see my friends. So... I want to spend that time with you..."
She suddenly kissed me, still having tears run down her face. I kissed back and hugged onto her. I continued to rub her back, trying to sooth her.
[Time Skip, One Month]
I had been able to sleep off and on ever since I left the hospital. Mostly when I slept Ruby was with me, so I felt at ease. I have yet to tell her more about the condition I have, including it's four stages. The first lasts five months, worsening insomnia, panic attacks, and paranoia. In two months the next stage should start where I'll start to become so sleep deprived I'll hallucinate. The third is total and complete loss of sleep, which will be followed by sever weight loss, and finally the fourth stage, my body will begin to shut down over the course of six months. I laid in bed with Ruby, her wrapped around me as if I were a hug pillow. I felt myself slowly pass out into a, not so blissful, sleep.
[Time Skip, Two Months]
They had taken back to the hospital after I started to lose track of reality. I knew I was hallucinating, I could tell the difference between real and imaginary, but I didn't want Ruby to see me all the time like this. Although that didn't really work, she practically lives at the hospital with me. The staff stopped caring about visiting hours. They let her stay well past the visiting hours because they know there's nothing more they can do, other than make me comfortable.
You want to know the best thing about dying? Everyone tries to make you the happiest person.
You want to know what the worst thing about dying is? Realizing there's nothing anyone can do but try to make you smile.
I heard something like that once. But I really don't see it. With Ruby I only want to see her happy. I looked to my side and watched as Ruby was clutching onto my hand tightly while sleeping. I had a splitting headache, my eyes felt heavy, I felt so weak and tired, but still I couldn't help but smile as I looked down at her.
[Time Skip, Five Months, Ruby's POV]
I felt tears slip down my face as I looked at (Y/N). I had come to visit like normal. But the doctor wouldn't let me in the room, so I rushed passed him. (Y/N) laid there, not moving besides the slow rise and fall of his chest. It looked like he couldn't even hold his head up. He had been losing weight really fast, but now he was basically nothing but skin and bone. His eyes were dull, almost lifeless. I rushed over to the side of his bed and grabbed onto his hand. He slowly turned his head and looked at me.
(Y/N): "H-Hey Ruby. Didn't see you come in."
His voice sounded as if it took an extreme amount of energy just to talk. He gave me a small smile, which made me cry even more.
(Y/N): "C-Come here."
I looked up at him and crawled onto the hospital bed, then held onto him. I laid my head on his chest. His heartbeat was faint and worryingly slow. He gently wrapped his arm around me and held me as I cried into his chest.
Me: "I don't want you to go..."
(Y/N): "I-I'm not going to go anywhere... I'll always be with you, you know that."
[Time Skip, Six Months]
Yang held me back as I screamed and tried to get into the hospital room.
Yang: "Ruby calm down! The doctor said-"
Me: "I don't care! I need to see him!"
I screamed as tears rolled down my face. I got a call, saying that (Y/N) was showing the signs of... you know. I finally broke free from Yang and sprinted into the room.
Yang: "Ruby no!"
As I entered the room all I saw was (Y/N)... being covered by a shroud. I felt my legs give out as I fell to my knees and started balling uncontrollably. I covered my face as I cried and shook. Yang came up behind me and put a hand on my shoulder. I heard foot steps that stopped in front of me. I slowly looked up to see the doctor kneeling.
Doctor: "Ruby... (Y/N) told me to give you these when he passed. I'm sorry for your loss..."
He handed me a stack of papers. I looked down at them to see they were all in (Y/N)'s handwriting. They dates and times on them, as if he were keeping a journal. I read the first one.
Note: "Day 1, 3:02 AM. I told Ruby what the doctor said to me, about what was wrong with me. She cried, and I felt terrible that I was causing her pain. She said it wasn't fair. And she's right, it's not fair for her to have to go through this. I suppose I'm more worried about her then I am myself. Which is understandable, I love her after all."
I shifted through the papers, seeing that his handwriting progressively got sloppier and he made more mistakes. Once I got to the last note I saw the handwriting was neat.
Note: "Ruby, please know you aren't alone. I'll be with you, in your heart and in your mind. If you ever need anyone, if you need to talk, remember your friends and sister. I love you Ruby and I'm sorry I put you through this. Thank you for staying with me until the end. Sincerely, (Y/N) (L/N)."
Doctor: "He had our receptionist write it for him word for word. He also told us to give you this."
I looked up from the note to the doctor to see him handing me (Y/N)'s folded up black and (Favorite Color) scythe. I took it and hugged onto it.
Me: 'We first started talking because I saw him fight with this... I started freaking out about how cool it was and he started talking about how he liked Crescent Rose...'
Yang pulled me up and hugged me while trying to sooth me as I cried clutching the notes and his scythe to my chest.
[(A/N): Hey Guys! Just a little note I forgot to add in here. The disease I used in this, is actually a fatal illness in the real world. I may have not gotten the stages exactly correct but yeah. Fatal Familial Insomnia is a rare disease that slowly takes away the ability to sleep. So please no joking, it's something that really should be taken seriously. But anywho! Enough of that serious talk, DarkPrince out!]
