Part 16
Jarrod was in his private palace looking out over the calm streets of Minstral, then he looked at Havan academy in the distance. Only a few days ago, fate had crowned a new Maiden, and the Order had kneeled before her without question as they have for as long as Jarrod could remember. Jarrod was lost in his own thoughts when Isabel entered and kneeled before him.
Jarrod: Rise and speak Isabel.
Isabel: *stands up* Father I've been meaning to ask, why does our goddess force us to associate with these petty thugs?
Jarrod: *his brow furrows* Are you questioning my wisdom?!
Isabel: N-no father, never.
Jarrod: Good *stands up and starts walking* So, how go our operations in the streets?
Isabel: Right on schedule.
Jarrod: Our search and rescue crews back in Vale?
Isabel: All is well.
Jarrod: Excellent, you may go daughter.
Jarrod enters a room off the main hall, the room was dome shaped, had a shallow pool of water at the center, and was dimly lit with only a few candles. The room's only occupant was an aged woman whose visage was hidden by a long flowing shroud.
Jarrod: Wise prophet, show me the future of the Order.
Prophet: As you wish master Jarrod.
The prophet reaches into her shroud and pulls out a fistful of deep red powder, she then throws it into the pool, causing the water to boil for a moment and stop.
Jarrod: Well, what do you see?
Prophet: Yes, I see it. The order's fate swings in the balance, with this a new future must unfold. A daughter of greatness, though illegitimate, with help from allies, turns new to old, She will bring about the turn, Or this world will truly burn. Jarrod, you must beware, the order's fate rests aware, in the hands, of one, you, hate.
Jarrod: But, that's impossible, Kayla is a fool and a heretic, she can't be the Order's future!
Prophet: I have never steered the Order wrong before master Jarrod.
Jarrod: You are foolish! *starts walking away*
Prophet: No one can escape destiny, not even you!
Kayla was having trouble sleeping, the surviving warriors who had forsaken the Order after Cinder took over were scrambling to seal Longblade Garrison to protect it from a raging blizzard outside. Kayla was cold, confused, and had no idea what to do, but sleep claimed her eventually. When she awoke, she was on a blasted battle ground, blood ran in rivers everywhere and she witnessed survivors like Christine and Helen being butchered by knights of the Order, whose armor was drenched in blood and whose eyes were filled with wicked glee. In the middle of it all however was her former father Jarrod. Kayla reached for her pike, and found it wasn't there, so she threw out a sword of light, which Jarrod deflected with ease. She threw another, and another, but it didn't slow Jarrod down at all. Kayla fell to her knees in exhaustion just as Jarrod reached her.
Jarrod: *raised his glaive* You are a disgrace to everything the Order stands for!
Jarrod brought his glaive down on Kayla, but before it could touch her, she catapulted off her bed screaming. Kayla looked around and found she was drenched in a cold sweat. Kayla then heard someone knocking at the door.
Helen: Kayla, Kayla!
Kayla: Um, come in.
Helen: *enters* The blizzard has subsided, and we need new orders.
Kayla: Alright, gather everyone in the council room, and I'll be right out.
Helen nodded and left. Kayla sat on her bedside for a good 10 minutes, this is the fourth time this week she had this nightmare and she had no clue as to why. But she didn't have time to think about that, she put on her armor and left for the council room. The council room was a massive room that a massive stage with a podium at the far end, normally a long table would dominate this room, but it was removed to make room for the crowd of warriors, squires, and servants that had gathered here, eager to hear Kayla's words.
Kayla: *steps up to the podium* U-um, people, people settle down!
Everyone quiets down.
Squire: Kayla, what do we do?!
Servant: We can't challenge the Order!
Warrior: The Maidens have forsaken us, forsaken all of Remnant! The end is nigh!!!
Mass hysteria fills the room.
Kayla: SILENCE!!!
Dead silence overtakes the room.
Kayla: Now listen, dark times have overtaken Remnant, but we will not go quietly into the night! No, we will be the shining torch that guides Remnant to it's next golden age!
Recruit: But what about the Maidens, they no longer give us their blessing?!
Kayla: You're wrong, they have always blessed us!
Squire: Jarrod had us all branded traitors when that villain was crowned Maiden, they won't bless us, and we are powerless!
Kayla: No, we never were. Forget about the new ways, from this day forward, we are the Legacy of the Sisters! And only the original Maidens will command our worship!
Warrior: And what of the current Maidens?
Kayla: They will not be worshiped, but instead praised as embodiments of our gods. All except for the current fall Maiden, she is to be cursed and reviled in the same way as The dark one!
The crowd starts muttering.
Squire: And how are we to defeat the Order?
Kayla: We must gather power here in Atlas, they will give us all we need to challenge the Order, and restore peace to our faith. And peace to all of Remnant!
Recruit: But how do we do that?
Kayla: Like all organizations, we must have humble beginnings. We'll start be providing medical care to all survivors of Vale who need it, and aiding in the stopping of crimes elsewhere. We cannot give up, we will never give up, not as long as our faith lies splintered like this, so what do you say comrades, will you bury your resolve and quit, or will you fight for what you truly believe in?!?
Everyone in the crowd cheers.
Kayla: Then onward, to justice, to peace, and glory!!
The crowd cheers again and starts scrambling around, ready to fulfill their orders.
Christine: *approaches with a radio* Kayla, Kayla, you gotta hear this!
Kayla: A mission?
Christine: A big one.
Christine turns the radio's knob a few times.
Radio: And it's been about a week since the Lightning specter's disappearance. After being defeated my notorious criminal Isaac Foglance, they disappeared into the frozen wastes without a trace.
Kayla: Wait, did they say Isaac?
Christine: Don't you see, if we save those pilots, the Atlesian military will take notice, and they'll give us all the power we need.
Kayla: *thinks on it for a moment* Get the parkas, we're going out there!
Christine: Ok!
After getting dressed in a some parkas, and gathering enough materials for the journey, Kayla, and her sisters set out into Atlas's arctic plains in search of the missing pilots.
Helen: Kayla if I may ask, how are we gonna find anything out here?
Kayla: We're looking for the ruins of two Atlesian jets, so I got this.
Kayla pulls out a small circular device attached to a hand sized steel rod.
Kayla : All Atlesian vehicles and machines rely on a generator that uses dust as a power source. I can use this device to track the dust in their jet's engines and find them that way.
Christine: You think it'll work?
Kayla: I know it'll work.
A sudden cracking noise pierced the quiet.
Helen: What was that?
They looked under their feet to find the ice was giving way to a frozen lake beneath them.
Kayla: MOVE!!!
The three of them start running across the ice as fast as they could, the lake breaking up behind them.
Christine: Which way?!?
Kayla finds a snowbank at the base of a small hill.
Kayla: That way!!
Kayla and Christine manage to turn, but Helen slips on the ice and it starts to break around her.
Helen: Kayla, Christine, help!
Kayla: Christine, keep moving, I'll go get her!
Kayla turns around and starts moving towards Helen, but noticed the ice at her feet is breaking and she has nowhere else to move. The ice breaks and Helen almost falls in the water, but Kayla saves her with a light shield and carefully floats her to safety.
Helen: *huff* Thank you Kayla, but you didn't have to.
Kayla: Nonsense, I won't leave a friend behind, let alone my sister.
Kayla carefully walks Helen across the ice to Christine.
Christine: That was close. So Kayla, what does your thing say?
Kayla: *looks at the dust tracker* According to this they're. *Kayla's eyes widen* Just over this hill!
Kayla climbs to the top of the hill and sees the scraped remains of two jets.
Kayla: Guys, I found them, come on!
Kayla hurries down the hill with her sisters close behind. Upon reaching the first jet, Kayla ripped the cockpit glass off the jet and found the unconscious pilot inside.
Pilot: *eyes open slightly and weakly speaks* A-are you a rescue crew?
Kayla: Stay calm, we're getting you outta here.
Pilot: T-thank you. *motions to the other jet* Listen, my friend is over there, can you go get him?
Kayla: Of course. Christine, Helen, go help him.
Christine and Helen run over to the other jet.
Kayla: *pulls a ration out of her pack and gives it to the pilot* How long have you've been out here?
Pilot: *starts eating* 3 days at least.
Kayla: Gather everything you can carry, we're taking you back to Atlas.
The ground rumbles, Kayla looks around but can't see anything in the gathering fog.
Pilot: What was that noise?
Kayla: It was probably nothing.
The ground rumbles again, only this time it was closer.
Kayla: I think something's here, stay down.
Kayla draws her pike, through the fog she could see a large figure getting closer.
Kayla: Christine, Helen, we got company!!
Christine rushes to Kayla's side with her warhammer while Helen readies her crossbow, and Kayla's yelling caused the figure to start dashing toward them. Through the driving fog came a goliath, but instead of an elephant, this goliath resembled a mammoth.
Kayla: *quickly comes up with a plan* Christine, attack it's legs, Helen, aim high!!!
Christine charges at the goliath, which swings it's head, trying to attack with it's tusks. Christine slides under the attack and slams her hammer into one of it's legs, breaking the goliath's stride and tripping it. Kayla leaps off the jet and lands on the goliath's back, she stabs into it with her pike, but can't cause any substantial damage. Kayla then notices an unfired missile on the other jet.
Kayla: Helen, there's a missile over there, fire it at this beast!!
Helen: B-but, what about you?!?
Kayla: Just do it!!
Helen gets to the jet's controls and starts looking for the fire button. Meanwhile, the goliath bats Christine away with it's tusks and shakes Kayla off it's back. Turning to Kayla, the goliath slowly starts lumbering toward her.
Kayla: Helen, hurry up with that missile!!
Helen starts starts mashing buttons in the cockpit, eventually hitting the right one, the missile flies from the wing and slams into the goliath, exploding and killing it. The other pilot peeks out from his jet.
Pilot 2: Uh, is it gone?
Helen: Don't worry, it's all clear. Now get your stuff, we'll get you guys treatment.
The three sister then take the two pilots back to Longblade Garrison for medical care.
Kayla: Can they be treated.
Doctor: Minor burn wounds and some frostbite, just a few days of care and they'll be back on their feet.
Kayla: Excellent. *looks at one of the pilots* If you don't mind me asking, what happened to your comrades?
Pilot: They were all killed, by some crazy raccoon faunus in a gray hoodie.
Kayla regards with news with shock and fear.
Kayla: So it's true, Isaac has turned from the path of good.
Kayla, with a heavy heart, leaves the medical bay and heads for the communications room. A small room filled to the brim with screens, radios, and other machines. Only two people staffed this room.
Kayla: You, get Ironwood on the line, we have his missing pilots.
Comms officer: Yes m'lady.
The comms officer types on his keyboard and turns a few knobs, causing one of the screens to static for a few moments before a video feed of Ironwood appeared.
Ironwood: General Ironwood here.
Kayla: General, this is Kayla, leader of the organization known as the Legacy of the Sisters, we have your missing pilots.
Ironwood: Where are they?
Kayla: My men are giving them medical care as we speak, they'll be ready to return to active duty in a few days.
Ironwood: I'll send a rescue team to come get them when that time comes.
Kayla: Understood, Kayla out. *terminates the transmission*
After a few days of treatment, the two pilots were ready to return to Atlas. Only thing, Ironwood was there along with the return team.
Kayla: *approaches as the pilots board the return bullhead* To what do I do this honor general?
Ironwood: I wanted to express my gratitude for bringing these two home.
Kayla: No need to thank, I live for justice and the betterment of Remnant.
Ironwood: In that case, I have a task for you.
Kayla: What is it?
Ironwood: Are you aware your former teammate Isaac is the one who put these two pilots into that situation.
Kayla: *hangs her head* I'm well aware.
Ironwood: Not only that, but he stole something important and fled to Mistral . I've already sent Winter there to find him, but she's having trouble. I want you to go support her, if you can find Isaac and arrest him, you'll have Atlas's support.
Kayla had no idea how to respond, with Atlas's support, she could finally defeat Jarrod and restore the integrity of her faith, but she had to fight and arrest one of her greatest allies and friends, who would most likely face the death penalty for what he's done.
Kayla: I-I accept.
Ironwood: Good, you'll depart tomorrow, be ready by then.
Kayla: Of course general.
Kayla goes back into the Garrison and is greeted by Helen
Helen: So, how did you meeting with the general go?
Kayla: He wants us to go to Mistral tomorrow. He said if we arrest a dangerous criminal there, we'll have Atlas's support.
Helen: Kayla that's great news, we can defeat the Order with Atlas's help!
Kayla: *gives a fake smile* Y-yeah, we can.
Helen: Kayla, what's wrong?
Kayla: Nothing, what do you mean?
Helen: Kayla, we're sisters, I can tell when something's wrong with you, and you shouldn't be afraid to tell me.
Kayla: Well, you know Isaac?
Helen: He was a teammate of your's right?
Kayla: Yes, you see, he's the criminal we're supposed to go after.
Helen: Kayla, is that true?
Kayla: Yes, and I don't know if we should do.
Helen: Think of this way. Maybe while we're there, we can find a way to convince Atlas to lessen Isaac's sentence. And we can defeat Jarrod along the way.
Kayla: I suppose you're right. Tell Christine we're leaving tomorrow, and I'll pick out some of our finest.
Helen: Ok sis *leaves*
Kayla's path was set, she would be to Mistral, defeat Isaac, bring him to justice, and hopefully save him from the death sentence. Kayla went off to pack for the impending journey.
End of part 16.
