Chapter 11
Holden's POV
The first thing that caught my attention as I entered my townhouse was the giggles that were coming from my living room. With alarm running through me, I walked briskly to the room.
A little boy of about two or three stood in front of the TV with his face pressed against the screen.
Where did the kid come from? I frowned. "Hello." I didn't know what else to say to a child to get his attention. Saying hello usually works with my nieces and nephews. "Hello." I repeated.
The kid shrieked and jumped away from the tv like he was just caught doing something that he wasn't supposed to be doing.
"Hello," he responded.
Blue eyes.
Bright, clear, deep blue eyes, identical to mine, stared at me. A tight fist of apprehension grabbed me by the throat as I studied the kid's features.
No! It wasn't possible!
This was some sort of joke right? This was probably one of Kris's pranks. I chuckled and shook my head, why not play along?
"Who are you and where do you come from?" I asked.
The little boy lifted his eyes and said, "Kieran, but my mommy calls me Carebear."
I raised my eyebrow. He still didn't answer my question but that was quite understandable, he's a baby. "Who's your mommy and where is she?"
"My mommy's name is Katiana Bennett." he lifted his hands to point. "She's down there. She's working. She said that I should watch TV and be a good boy."
Something inside me shifted and my frown deepened when he identified Katiana as his mother. Kris wouldn't make such a cruel joke. He knew the pain I went through after the 'breakup' with Katiana.
But Katiana couldn't possibly have a child could she? Technically she could but she didn't right?
I gulped in a large breath and shook my head. I was imagining things.
I looked down at the boy who shared my eye color.
"You said your mother's name is Katiana?" I questioned. I needed to know more about him. Why the hell is Katiana's child the carbon copy of me at that age? Maybe I was tripping, maybe it was just the eyes.
He nodded. "Yeah, she is. She's my mommy."
I bent to his level. "What's your name?"
"Kieran," he responded.
"Nice name."
He blushed. "Thank you."
"How old are you, Kieran?" I asked.
He lifted two fingers up with a smile on his face. However the only thing that did was deepen my frown. If Katiana's child was two years old, it meant two things, either she was pregnant before we broke up or she got pregnant shortly after. The latter seems less likely considering Kieran looked like me as a toddler.
I frowned.
You're tired, I told myself. You didn't get much rest this past weekend and you've missed a great deal of sleep. Your eyes are playing tricks on you. You're jet lagged.
Katiana's son doesn't resemble you and you know it.
Look at the child again. You'll see that he doesn't look a damn thing like you.
I was looking at him..right in the eye.
"What's your name?" the little boy asked.
I cleared my throat before answering. "Holden, my name is Holden."
"Like the story..." he said cheerfully.
"The story?" I asked with a frown.
He nodded. "Mommy always tells me the story about Holden and his fast cars. He drives all the nice fast cars."
"Does he?" I asked him, intrigued at his eagerness for fast cars. He was only two years old.
I nodded. "Yea, he has a yellow sports car. A Ferrari. He drives it all the time and he always stops to allow children to cross the line."
I smiled. He seemed way more intelligent than the average two-year-old. Maybe he got his age wrong. Nah, He looked way too young to be three. He was skinny and fragile, unlike me as a child. I was a chubby kid and I didn't grow out of it until I hit puberty.
Unless I got the exact date of his birth there was no way to make sure he was mine, even if he looked somewhat like me. Katiana wasn't the most trustworthy person. She proved that when she betrayed me and threw my love in my face in front of my friends, family, colleagues, and half the city.
"I have a red Ferrari."
He clapped his heads together in excitement. "Oh really? Can I see it please?"
I pouted, "I don't have it here. It's in a garage."
He frowned and bent his head.
"I used to have a yellow one but I crashed it."
"Oh no," he lifted his head and smiled. "Is it broken?"
I laughed. Do all male kids love destroying things? "Yeah. That's why I got the red one."
He giggled. "When I grow up I'm going to have this much Ferraris." He lifted five fingers up.
"Oh yeah?" I chuckled.
He nodded his little head, "Yeah. Rum rum rum.." he started to make car noises.
I laughed and pulled out my phone, "Do you want to see a picture?"
Kieran nodded eagerly so I pulled out my phone and showed him my homescreen. "That's it."
"Wow." he said in awe. "I want one. I want one. I want one!"
I laughed at his excitement. "How are you gonna buy it?"
He looked at me with his bright eyes and smiled, "I'm gonna grow up and be just like you."
Something in my heart sank. Was this my child? If he was, why did Katiana keep him away from me for so long? Was she ever going to introduce us? What did I ever do to her for her to treat me this way?
Shaking my head, I reached out and touched his face. He didn't flinch or make an effort to move away. He just stared at me with a smile on his face. "You okay?" he asked.
I nodded slowly and found my voice. "Yea. I'm okay." I paused. It probably wasn't my business to be asking him questions but I asked him the question that was burning my brain. "What's your daddy's name, Kieran?"
He frowned and shook his head, "I don't know. I don't have a daddy. Ms. Johnson says not everyone has daddies. Some kids have super mommies, like me."
I raised my eyebrows at the statement but said nothing. That was a cruel thing to teach a child. Every child deserves to know his or her father. It was unfair for Katiana to deny her child the right.
What if he's my child?
My cell phone chimed which made me look down on my phone. That's when the idea popped in my head.
A picture.
If I took a picture of him, I could always compare it to a picture of me at the same age.
"Do you want me to show you something cool?" I asked Kieran.
He nodded his head eagerly. "Yes, show me."
"I'll have to take a picture of you first. Can I take a picture of you?" I asked.
He nodded. "Yeah."
I put some distance between us and took a picture of the smiling child. I opened the picsart app on my phone and quickly edited his picture to make it look like he was standing in front of my car.
When I showed him the picture he jumped in excitement. "Cooool."
I smiled. "Yeah cool."
In a normal situation I would never take a picture of someone's child without their parent's permission but I think this was needed. Taking a picture of Kieran would confirm the crazy thoughts that were running through my head.
Was he my child?
And what will I do if he is my child?
"Mommy!" Kieran said excitedly looking behind me.
I turned slowly but just in time to see the horrified look on Katiana's face.
