this update is an extra-special update for my good friend deunan who has been supporting me since the early days of this account... around 2020? 2021? jeremy bearimy baby, i have no idea what's going on. these covers are for ASCENSION, a star wars poe dameron fic; and VERTIGO, an upcoming spider-man (peter parker) fic.

#StarDayOnes (#KeeneDayOnes? #Park? #Zoia? can't remember what pen name i was using when i first made these) might recognise ASCENSION covers i. and ii. i made these ones a long time ago (like... 2 years tops, probably, but like i said: jeremy bearimy, baby!) but "remastered" them for deunan for the year of our lord 2025. sometime between now and when i first made those covers, i got a new laptop and i guess lost the original ASCENSION title font in the move? i had to find a new one, which i don't like as much as the old one, but i couldn't find the file anywhere on my mac or on the internet (for free, at least. so i'm not sure how i got my hands on it in the first place.)

i have always adored these covers so it was nice to return to them. even nicer to see deunan return to the story they're for, too. 🥰

VERTIGO, however, is a brand-new story and in kind, comes with brand-new covers. i went a bit overboard with these ones, but i'm really, really glad with how they all turned out. i was given free rein with these covers, which also meant i was able to choose the comic faceclaim for deunan's protagonist. i went with vampirella, who if i recall correctly, i've never used before. VERTIGO is a supernatural-y, thriller peter fic featuring vampires, which is super interesting and has so much potential. narratively, of course, but more importantly for my role: visually.

before we get going with these, i'll say what needs to be said: yes, they're red. vampires, blood, spider-man, star... how could it be anything other than red?

anyways! 🤪🤪 moving on.

cover i. is actually the cover i made last. in comparison to the others, it has a lot more white space, which was on purpose. though i really liked how choc-a-bloc-packed the other three covers are, i wanted something that felt a little less claustrophobic. i really like the blending on this one. i feel it's compositionally very different to the other covers, which is good: i wanted deunan to have a lot of options.

VERTIGO's antagonist is a character known as the puppeteer, so cover ii. focuses on that aspect using art of peter (all peter's art in these covers is by the incredible gabriele dell'otto, one of my favourite spider-man artists ever) where he's tangled in, almost trapped in, his webs. silk like puppet strings. i wanted all these covers to look consistent with each other, so aside from the shared colour scheme, i used the same title treatment across the board. VERTIGO appears either warped (covers ii., iii. and very hard-to-spot on iv.) or on the left-side of the cover (at -90° on cover i. and vertical-down on cover iv.) and otherwise untouched.

cover iii. is technically the cover i made first (don't ask me why they're numbered differently, it's just how i named them while putting them into my "delivery" template 🤣) and features that same silk-strings idea, except it's mostly wrapped around the oc's hands and the various titles and subtitles on the cover. all the other covers have really random comic titling conventions (i.e. the the amazing spider-man logo; barcode; marvel symbol) but this one follows after actual covers. you guys will see that in my dc covers in particular i often make them with the dc rebirth branding. with marvel comic covers it's just whatever i feel like.

cover iii. has a predominantly-red alt. version as well because i am very, very predictable.

cover iv. is probably my favourite. the original art used of vampirella was upside down by design (something about vampires, i imagine) so i thought... why not make peter be upside down, too? it's not like he doesn't hang from things all the fucking time 😅 soooo, here we are. also, insert something here about vertigo from being upside down. i really liked how this turned out, even though it's a pretty easy concept to execute and not super big-brained. i think it shook things up a little bit. cover iv. is also available in an alt. version that contains a more muted blue, and of course, a classic bayports red alt. too.
