Forty-Three

"I can't believe that fucking worked.", you laughed, shocked by all the bodies you had to get over to enter the vault.

The blood of your own men spread around your feet. As you walked on the carpet, your shoes left deep, dark imprints of death.

Adler closed the vault behind you and Bell, locking you inside.

"Grab the intel, I'll keep watch.", he nodded into your deprecation. "Angel, make sure our way out is safe."

Agreeing, you nodded and checked for the door that led into another, high security tunnel.

"All clear.", you called out and caught a glimpse of Bell, accessing the control center of the KGB.

He gave you a sign, thumbs up, that he got the plan.

In a short moment of privacy, you and him had decided to leave a secret message behind for the Soviets to find. You didn't want to inform them about the safe house, that would have been too risky, but telling them where Bell was and that you were with him would be enough to give them a good look of the bigger picture.

Adler noticed you staring at Bell.

"Everything alright?", he asked as you joined him at the vault door. "You seem to have interest in him."

You gifted him a cocky smile.

"I might marry him.", you teased.

He rolled his eyes.

"Angel. I'm serious."

"So am I."

"Funny, really. If you have concerns about him, I want to know."

You patted his shoulder and met his eyes.

"Don't worry.", you pushed his shades back up with two fingers. "The only person I've ever been more sure about than Bell is you."

Satisfied with that answer, Adler turned his attention back to the door.

A bright, flickering light suddenly burst into the room. It looked like a wand made of flames.

"Fuck...", you cursed. "They are cutting it open!"

Your head snapped to Bell.

Luckily, he was no fool.

"I'm ready!", he said and waved the floppy disc in the air.

"Good.", Adler pushed you to go. "Let's get the fuck out of here!"

"Never agreed with you so much, shades!", you laughed and started running for the hills.

"Are you fucking kidding me?!", you groaned as you and the team reached a way out.

A red door with glass windows opened in front of you.

Soviet soldiers were standing in lines, all geared up like fighting a war.

Adler glanced into the room, head pulled in.

"They've got Belikov.", he hissed. "Time for plan B."

You rolled your eyes.

"Can't we just ice him?", you asked.

Smirking, he looked at you.

"Since when so grumpy, angel?"

"I'm serious, shades. I want to get the fuck out of here."

"Understandable.", his attention turned to Bell. "Bell. Activate the gas."

"With pleasure.", Bell pulled out a remote control, flipped the antenna and pressed a button.

At the other side of the door, a soldier was attempting to execute Belikov with a headshot.

The man was struggling and fighting, begging them to let him go for the usual reasons.

Of course they didn't listen.

You wouldn't have either.

A loud bang broke through the ringing sound of the alarm.

That was your sign to put on the gas mask.

On the other side, the air started to turn green.

Confused, the soldiers looked around. They realised too late that what they were breathing wasn't good for the lungs.

Choking and coughing, they sunk to their knees and started twisting in pain, struggling for air.

Belikov wasn't spared either.

His eyes twisted back as he fell to the side, right into a stream of gas.

In that moment you thought this would be a good opportunity to get rid of him. He probably knew who you were or at least heard of the rumours about you.

At a command, Adler pushed the doors open and started firing.

You took the right, while he cared for everyone at the left.

Bell went right into the middle, rushing to Belikov's side and put a gas mask on him.

"Thank you, my friend!", Belikov gasped.

Adler helped him to his feet.

"What's the situation up top?", he asked.

"They're on full alert.", locking the building down.

"Perfect.", you groaned. "We need something heavy to get outa here, shades."

"My thought.", Adler agreed.

"I know just the place, my friend.", Belikov said and happily took the lead.

You wondered how someone could have it so easy to betray their own. He didn't seem to be affected about his decisions or actions at all.

You wished to be a bit more like him.

That way it would have been easier for you to be more American yet less close to Adler.

The lines weren't just blurry anymore. They faded into nothing.

"Nice!", you smiled and pumped up the shotgun from the Soviet bunker. "Not gonna lie, it was a good idea to keep him."

Agreeing, Adler hummed.

Just like the rest of you, he was now stuck in thick, bulletproof gear and a helmet that didn't allow him to wear his shades.

He had entrusted them to you to store in a safe place.

"Let's get up top.", he got the elevator going. "Lazar, meet us in the southwest courtyard in five minutes. And Belikov is hitching a ride."

"Plenty of room in the backseat.", Lazar acknowledged over the radio and switched out again.

"Once we get off the elevator just keep moving towards the courtyard.", Adler turned to you again and passed some explosives. "Get the charge ready, angel."

You flipped the switch.

A green light jumped on.

The doors swung open.

"Let's go!", Adler put down the shield of his helmet.

As soon as a crack in the door opened, the fire started.

With one eye squeezed shut, you glanced around the corner and threw the C4.

Like a brick it sailed through the air, beeping.

One of the Soviets bullets hit it.

With a deafening sound it exploded into bright light, mixed with a cloud of dust and the smell of something burned.

The first wave of soldiers fell right into it. They didn't stand a chance.

Once the light was gone, Adler and Bell started shooting.

You waited behind to make sure Belikov was still with you.

It wouldn't have been smart to be in front of him. That way, he might would have recognised you.
