xxiii.

Devin was clearly surprised to see me in the morning. The night before I had just been attack along with Killian and I was suppose to stay clear of school for about two weeks to learn how to control myself. I couldn't be cooped up in the house all day though. I was fully rested and I rather be in school than in my room all day waiting for night to come. I even surprised myself because I never wanted to go to school.

“Where on Earth do you think you're going?” Devin asked as threw on my jacket. He stood up from the dinning room table, “You're staying home.”

“No.” I said, giving him a hard look. “I'm not gonna stay home all day again. It's Friday anyways, one day isn't gonna hurt.” I said as I walked around him over towards the front door.

He followed behind me, “You're risking allot though, Mat. You should be taking advantaging of staying home, not going to school where you don't seem to have allot of people liking you.”

“I can control myself, Devin.” I said, walking out of the house.

“We're still gonna talk about the other day.” he called out to me and I rolled my eyes as I walked down the street. I had avoided Devin all day yesterday since I had been sleeping and when I was awake I quickly ran out of the house to Killian place.

When I got to school I hurried over towards the group who were surprised to see me but didn't give me much problems like Devin did. I hugged Killian and in the corner of my eyes I turned to see Nate looking at me.

Killian cup my face and kissed me, “My parents should be arriving something in the afternoon. Their pretty interested in knowing about you.”

“Oh probably how I’m getting their son into a bunch of trouble.” I said, grinning. I looked around and noticed Marco and Will weren't here. I went over to Blue who was standing out of the crowd and looked lonely since her mate wasn't here. I put my arm around her and held her close. She gave me a small smile and leaned in close to me for comfort.

I felt someone eyes on me and I turned my head to the right to see Emily staring at me with a hurt look. She seemed to have been walking this way but stopped. I realized it was because the same way I'm comforting Blue was the same way I comfort Emily when she was upset. I haven't been able to spend to much with Emily like I had said I would since I've been busy and haven't had time.

I stepped away and went towards her, “Emily—“ She just turned around and quickly walked away, “Emily wait!” I yelled as I walked towards her but she soon picked up her pace and ran into the school. I stopped and my hands fell down to my side as I watched the door hoping she'll come back out because I felt so bad.

I turned around and walked back over to everyone. I went over towards Blue who put her arm around mine and I stared down at the ground feeling ashamed of myself because Emily probably thinks I abandoned her. Emily is still a very important person in my life.

“She was asking where you've been all week.” Blue said and scoffed. “Little human needs to get over it.”

I lifted my head and turned to face Blue surprised, “What?”

“Yeah.” she said. “Kept being a real pest to us all.”

“Blue—” Killian started but I cut him off quickly.

I pulled away from Blue, “Hey, watch it. Emily is still my friend and only cares about me. You all better have left her alone while I was gone.” I said warningly and everyone was quiet. I looked around confused and that just made me angry. My hands balled into a fist, “What?”

“Elliot may have embarrassed her in their Bio class.” a Junior wolf name Kyson said.

My protective instinct went over and my teeth bared as I turned my head to face the bratty young freshman and he awkwardly turned his head away. I walked over towards him and grabbed him by his jacket, pulling him close towards me, “You think you're funny, asshole?” I asked him and he held his chin up showing no fear to me but didn't try to do anything. I pushed him back until he hit a car and his back slammed down against the hood of it, “You will leave her alone!”

He gave me a cold look, “Why do you care so much? She's just a human. She isn't apart of your life anymore, get over it.”

I lifted him up close to my face and bared my teeth. I could feel my eyes change color and his eyes widen in fear, “If I hear you're bullying her again, I'll beat some sense into you.” I said as I threw him onto the ground. Some of the members of the groups chuckled and I turned to face them, “And all of you shut up. You think I'm joking? You will leave her and others alone.” I went over to Blue as my eyes went back to hazel, “And I use to be one of those human pest.” I said to her as I walked away from them.

“Mat,” Killian said behind me, sighing heavily as he followed behind me. “Their all right, though. That's you're old life, this is you're new life.”

“I'll choose who can be in my life or not.” I said as I walked into the school building. I looked around to see if I could fine Emily but she was no where in site. I tried to track her smell but it was all mixed up with everyone else which only frustrated me even more. I turned to face Killian, “Do you agree with them?” I asked.

He gave me a confused look, “Huh?”

“That all humans are pest?” I asked coldly.

He scoffed, “I don't judge humans but I don't hang out with them. I rather be with my own people.”

“Well I can only imagine if I was human. You wouldn't even give me a second look.” I said as I stepped back and he scoffed, looking at me surprised. My whole body stiffen up and I closed my eyes as they changed to yellow. I took deep long breaths to calm myself so I wouldn't shift right there. Once I knew I was calm enough and my eyes were hazel I opened them, “I'm going to class early now.”

When I saw Emily in the hallways my eyes grew and I ran over towards her, “Emily!” I called out as I beezed around the crowd of students over towards her. She looked towards my direction and when she saw me, she scoffed and turned away before walking away but I quickly made it next to her. “Hey, I called your name.”

“I'm busy.” she said coldly as she rolled her eyes.

“I know, I know I've been a bad friend. I'm sorry.” I said. “Emily, lets hang out after school. I mean I have to do something at six but we can hang out before.”

“No thank you.” she said. She scoffed, “Where were you anyways? You just seemed to disappear.”

I sighed heavily, “I know. . .I was away somewhere.”

“Where?” she asked, scoffing. “Where could you have gone to that made you leave for four days?”

“Emily, I just found my brother. A brother I didn't know I had. He's getting married in two month and half months. Her family lives in Salem and I'm one of the bridesmaids. I was helping her.” I said.

“Going to Salem is a two and half hour drive.” she said, scoffing. “You changed allot recently since Killian got here. I don't even know who you are anymore.”

I grabbed her arm to stop her and she face me with a cold look, “Emily, I'm sorry. You're right though, I've changed and you don't know who I am now. I'm a completely different person and that person isn't good for you're world anymore.”

“You're making no sense, Mat.” she said and I rolled my eyes in frustration. “Why can't you just admit it?” she asked, confusing me. “You don't wanna be seen with me because of your new friends.”

I scoffed, “That isn't true, Emily! Before school after I tried talking to you I defended you. Why haven't you told me Elliot been bullying you? I would have taken care of him a long time ago.”

“I don't need you to defend me, Mat.” she said, scoffing. “I'm not a hopeless little girl. I just wanted you to be there for me as my friend but you haven't been there since Killian showed up. I didn't think a guy could make you forget all about me.”

“That isn't true either.” I said. “Killian is my boyfriend but you don't understand. Killian and I relationship is much stronger—”

She rolled her eyes, “Ugh, don't give me that mushy romance crappy about your relationship being strong and good.”

I sighed heavily, “Emily, please. Killian helped me realize something and that reason is why I am different.”

“What on Earth could be that reason?” she asked, scoffing. “Look Mat, just forget all about me because it's clear you don't need me anymore.” she said before walking away. I watched her and I groaned, kicking the wall in frustration.

I washed my hands in the sink after using the bathroom. I looked into the mirror and pulled my hair up in a bun. Strains of curls framed my face since they fell out of the bun. Since I cut my hair pulling it up been hard but it made everything feel so great. Long hair as a human, long as hair a wolf.

Something hit my nose with a strong mouth water scent. My head quickly whip to the right toward the entrance of the bathroom and without think I quickly walked out of the room. I sniffed the air a few times to see where the smell of meat was coming from and I realized it was coming from my right. I hurried over towards the staircase and I saw a guy at the bottom holding a plate of sliced raw meat.

I completely ignored the stranger since my stomach growled. Control yourself, Mat. Control. I kept telling myself but it wasn't working. My wolf side was hungry and the roast beef slices looked so delicious to eat.

The stranger whistled at me and I lifted my head to look at him growling, “Ahh, down girl.” he said grinning and my eyes narrowed on him. He picked one of the sliced roast beefs up and held it out to me, “Come on.” he said and I quickly went down the staircase and took the slice from him.

I bit into the halfway cooked roast beef slice and it was savory in my mouth. It was seasoned up which made the meat good since it was fresh—like literally just killed—and been sent to meat places, seasoning makes meat taste good again. When I finished it, I reached out to grab another one but the guy pulled the plate away. I growled at him again and he gave me a cold look.

“Stay or no meat.” he said, pissing me off since I wanted more. Control Mat, run away! Run because you don't this man. I kept telling myself but I had no control of my body. He held another slice out and I took it from him. My teeth sunk into the meat and ripped off a piece as I chewed on it. Half way finishing it I could control myself more and this strong odor hit my nose. I paused eating and I looked up at the man and realized he was a rogue wolf. I spit out the meat and stepped away.

I looked at the meat on the plate and saw season flakes on them. I didn't know what they were but I knew it wasn't good. My chest suddenly started to tighten up and I took in a sharp breath, bring my hand up to my chest. I breathing quickened as my heart beat sped up, “Wh—what did you do to me?”

“Aconitum is real lethal to wolves.” he said, dropping the plate that smashed with a loud sound.

“Aconitum?” I questioned as I stepped closer to the next staircase.

“Wolfsbane.” he said.

My eyes widen since everyone warned me about that plate and to make sure to next eat them since they were poisonous to wolves. “Is—is that what Ramses gave that she-wolf the other night? She almost died. . .”

His grin widen, “Shouldn't have picked something with our leader.”

I cried out, “I didn't—“

“Mat?” I heard Emily's voice and our heads quickly whipped to look down the staircase at her who looked confused an concern.

The man growled at her and I came close to him. I put my hands on his shoulders and brought my knees up against his manhood. He yelped in pain and crouched as I turned and ran down the staircase towards her. I grabbed her hand and dragged her away as I heard the rogue wolf growling again.

“Mat!” Emily yelled as we ran down the hallway away from the wolf. “Mat!” she said again in fear.

“Just keep running!” I yelled as I ran into the cafeteria. I closed the doors and locked it. The wolf slammed into the doors, his teeth bared and his eyes flashing yellow as he growled at us. Just like Ramses the other day he was stuck in some half-way shift with his face looking like a monster. Alpha Lincoln told me about these wolves. Apparently there's two kinds of rogues. The ones that leave packs and become them. And the ones like Ramses and this wolf who ancestors never changed their ways from the old days. They aren't tame and are monsters. They'll kill—wolves and humans.

“Mat, what's going on?” Emily said behind me.

I growled back the rogue wolf, “Go away!” I said. He slammed his body against the door and I jumped back. He kept slamming his body against the doors with a grin on his face and I stepped back, taking Emily hand again as I watched the rogue wolf try to bust the door open. I kept slowly stepping back with her, praying the door wouldn't open.

It did. The doors burst open and I turned us, “Run!” I screamed as we ran towards the kitchen. I turned my head around to see the Rogue wolf jumping on the tables and run towards us. I stopped when we reached the ends and grabbed one of the chairs right when he leaped at us and I swung it at him. He fell to the ground, bring his hands up to his head and just like that he shifted into a wolf.

I heard Emily take in a sharp breath and I cursed, “Fuck.” I said as I grabbed her hand and pulled us into the kitchen. I ran over towards the freezer and opened it. We went into the freezer and closed the big metal door. The rogue wolf behind it jumped against it and scratched at the door but the metal door would budge unlike the wooden ones.

“Mat!” Emily yelled at me panicking. “What the hell is going on!?” she coldly yelled at me and she started crying. I went towards her and I felt my eyes change from hazel to yellow. Her eyes widen as she gasped and she stepped back, “You're. . .you're one of them.”
